Exactly What I Was Hoping For!

Purchased November 2021. I have an Offset Smoker and wanted something I could use for southern style barbeque. Other options I looked at were flimsy. The Judge is heavy and sturdy. The fire grate can be lowered far enough away from the cooking grate for low/mid-temp barbeque. The fire door makes adding fuel so easy, which is key in cooks longer than an hour. With the Judge, I don't have to move the food to add fuel and lowering/raising the fire grate is super easy. Yes, you can smoke with the Judge and it does a fine job but I prefer using a smoker to smoke and a grill to grill. See it in action on my youtube channel where I put it to the test. tonytonebbq Thanks Oklahoma Joe for making an awesome charcoal grill!

I have been cooking on it frequently all spring/summer. Making everything from ribs and whole chickens to burgers and dogs. It has fed as few as two people, and as many as 50. This is the best, most versatile charcoal grill I have used. The heavy duty construction holds heat and makes for consistant temperature control. Uses less charcoal because of the efficiency. I am certainly not suggesting that other customers make modifications like this, but maybe it would be worth it for Oklahoma Joe's to think about offering a built in version of the Judge. One last thought, I also bought the cover and just like the grill, it is very heavy duty and fits perfect.

I have also purchased the smoker box built for it, and have used it with great success. One caveat for using lump with this guy - the charcoal grate gaps are pretty wide, so smaller pieces will inevitably fall through. Aside from the smoker box, I recommend two additional accessories: the branded cover and any 24” charcoal rake. The cover fits great, and you’ll want a rake for manipulating coals through the firebox door while cooking. Make sure to get a long one, not the short ones made for kamado cookers. Buy this grill! You won’t be disappointed!

Good Grill With Some Improvements
28 January 2023

It is definitely thicker steel than most of the grills out there, so it should last longer. There are however many people out there saying that welding quality is questionable and that is true - most of the welds are just spot tacks and will most likely not last very long. I will probably weld the hinges a little better myself. It is also missing a second level rack/shelf which I added myself (see picture). This would be a good product improvement!

Good grill, needs help for smoking
13 August 2020

I've had the Judge for about 3 months now and bought it because I wanted a charcoal cooker with more available grate space than my beloved Bronco. By far the best feature of this grill is the height adjustable fuel bin. You can do low and slow cooking or raise it up for a fantastic sear. A lot of versatility for grilling. Unlike a lot of the commodity charcoal grills on the market at a lower price, even a few that offer adjustable height fuel bins, this unit is made from stout materials that should last many years and not flex and twist when moved. At 170 pounds it easily outweighs those comparable sized cheapies by double because of the strength of materials. At 170 pounds it easily outweighs those comparable sized cheapies by double because of the strength of materials. The construction though is a bit slip shod as I had to repair a broken spot weld on the very bottom panel when unpacking and assembling. As I commented in the Q&A section the lower portion of the housing and around the exhaust stack the Judge leaks like a sieve. That's why I said it needs help for smoking. I consider temp control very important for longer smoke periods on larger pieces of meat that this is sized for. With all those leaks temp management is very difficult. I ended up using a high temperature, food grade rtv sealing material to close those gaps as well as a nomex gasket on the lid. Once those minor improvements were done it became a reliable smoker that allows temp control for longer smoking periods. Bottom line; it's good value once some minor fixes are done. Needing to do those fixes cost one star from my rating.

About 2 years ago yet another bbq made in China of paper thin sheet metal and rusting out. I researched for over a month looking for a large, heavy gage charcoal grill that I could smoke with. The Judge was exactly what I was I as looking for. I sealed the box seams and stove pipe with high temp food grade RTV, lining the top of the box with OJ’s gasket, seasoned it, and been qing constantly. The Judge is what I’ve always wanted. Firing up the coals and pitching in smoke apple or oak (sometimes both) and slow cooking every from veggies to prime ribs is my favorite hobby.Don’t be afraid of the whining about smoke leaks or buying gasket material and having to replace it. You should replace the gasket every year when you clean the grill thoroughly and reseason it ... MoreAbout 2 years ago yet another bbq made in China of paper thin sheet metal and rusting out. Poor QA and manufacturing
20 June 2022

I’ve been through 3 of these bbqs (original bought and 2 replacements). Each time after assembly there were air gaps between the lid cover and the bbq base. It’s clear the QA process with the hinge construction connecting the lid/base at Sitro/Oklahoma Joes is flawed - ie it’s clear the hinges are welded prior to assembly so they don’t line up the lid and base properly after assembly.Such a shame because I really wanted this bbq to work - it’s tough, durable and no electric components to break! But as another reviewer said “it’s pot luck” if your bbq is welded properly (Ive had 3 faulty bbqs in a row so don’t like the chances).Sitro/Oklahoma-Joe - let me know when you have fixed your QA process.

Poor Welding Quality- hinges break easily
27 March 2022

I purchased this grill for my father, and the first time it was used, the welds on one of the hinges that attaches the lid to the firebox snapped. Each hinge is welded on with four super tiny tack welds (see photos). Why they don’t weld these brackets all the way around is beyond me. The firebox and lid are both very heavy, and these tiny tack welds just can’t support the weight. This is a poor design. My guess is that when “Oklahoma Joe” invented this grill, he likely welded it right, but CharBroil has “cut costs” and quality right along with it. The only reason I give two stars instead of one is that they did immediately send us a replacement at no cost. The replacement has the same tiny little tack welds on it too, so who knows how long they will last. My suggestion is if you buy one, before you assemble it, consider taking it somewhere to get welded properly.

Poor alignment. Purchase if you like a gamble.
5 January 2023

Got this the other day. The lid was tweaked 5mm to left and bowed from rear left corner to the front right corner causing massive gaps between the lid and body. Not sure if the welds on the hinges were out of wack or both the body of the unit and the lid/ hinge assembly. Managed to get it sealed with 5mm think heat sealing tape all over the top lip of the unit along with some heavy readjusting. Production needs a massive overhaul and QC or at least preasseble the lid to check the units in correctly aligned. Very disheartening. Which is shame because all things considered its a nice grill. Dont recommend unless you wanna play a game of "lets realign this grill I just paid a $1000 for and $80 on 5mm think heat sealing tape"

Poor workmanship in weld
25 November 2022

I purchased a Judge in 2019. I have been a big fan of the product and use it regularly. In fact I have urged others to purchase. Now, as I am smoking my Thanksgiving turkey, the weld on my lid hinge breaks. Of course it's a 2 year warranty. I start looking at the welds in the back and they are all poorly done spot welds, so I'm sure the other hinge isn't going to make it much longer. I would hope that for the high price I paid I could get a product that lasts longer than 3 years? No more referrals from me.
