This was a gift over Christmas. While I haven't put it to extreme/constant use, the times I have used it were awesome. The intended use is at our weekend getaway or when we are traveling, tailgating. Running the grill is easy, it heats up quick on minimal charcoal. The adjustable height for the coals is a very great feature, need to reverse sear anyone?? As a smoker I stretched it from an OK Joe's beef jerky recipe to steaks, wings and even cheese, yes in a Canadian winter it'll go that low and slow. My only complaint is some shoddy spot welding on the outer shell. The very bottom sheet has let go along the back seam.Easily repaired once I can get to my welder. That is the only reason the quality rating gets an average. The fitment, the rest of the build, the ... MoreThis was a gift over Christmas. I bought this for my boyfriend’s birthday. The size and the functionality fit the expectations of my boyfriend. However when we tried to assemble the grill, both of us had a hard time removing the ash tray. We watched the Oklahoma Joe’s tutorial for this and the catch on the ash tray wouldn’t release. When we finished using the grill, it was impossible to remove the ash tray. I feel there was a manufacturing issue with the parts. In my opinion, the design of the ash tray was dumb. There was barely enough clearance for the ash tray to be lifted since there was metal on both sides sticking out. We had to wait for the grill and coal to cool before removing the ash tray. I was outside for over 30 minutes at 11 pm, watching the 10 second clip of the tutorial and couldn’t ... MoreI bought this for my boyfriend’s birthday. PURCHASED TODAY. at 1230. Put together, seasoned, grilled ribs, chix breast, sausage just for a test ride by 730. I have watched and reviewed the Rambler for weeks. This will be my go to grill for football season for sure. I told my granddaughter, my youngest son, and girlfriend that this a fathers day gift for my oldest son from his daughter. Nobody believes me as I have five in the yard already, cocerns: Hinges a little bit loose . overall excellent product. More reviews to come if they let me,,err him cook on fathers day.

Bought today from Academy. First the package was dented and the grill and all the inside had been stained from something that spilled. I know, not joes problem. What really gets me is when you find out how cheaply this thing is made. I couldn’t pull the ash tray out so when I looked underneath I saw that the thin sheet metal used for the tray support had been broken at the tack weld. I mean i know a hundred dollars ain’t worth what it used to be, but come on, why can’t anyone make something worth anything anymore. This grill looks good from a far, but start looking at it closely and realize it’s not worth wasting your time over.
I've owned my Oklahoma Joe's Rambler for about 16 months and use it every week. Aside from the charcoal tray warping from the heat and some exterior paint peeling off I was quite happy with the results (from smoking fish and ribs to searing tomahawks) - naturally these things happen and they didn't effect my cook... It is now at the 16 month mark and things are getting disappointing... The paint on the center of the lid has begun bubbling and I have interior flecks of paint landing on my food, all my vents have also begun to rust... I contacted Oklahoma Joe's directly and was told this is "normal" after use and only "cosmetic". While my initial impressions of this bbq were quite positive I can't help but feel I've been conned as the item begins to fall apart and ... MoreI've owned my Oklahoma Joe's Rambler for about 16 months and use it every week. While my initial impressions of this bbq were quite positive I can't help but feel I've been conned as the item begins to fall apart and I've been abandoned by their customer support. I expected this thing to last but realize this may not be the case - was told warranty is only within a year! Am I just expected to purchase a new one of these annually? What a dang shame on the poor construction but otherwise well designed kit.
I've had this grill for about a year now, it is exclusively used for when we are out in our RV. Overall cooking surface is a bit small, depending on what you are cooking, it cooks a lot of things VERY WELL. Ive made whole chickens in this (1 over indirect heat) and a whole rack of baby backs (cut in half for fitment). I use B&B charcoal and you only need about 3/4 of a chimney to get a long cook out of this thing. If im going to be using the whole cooking surface i lay down about 4-6 coals at the base and pour over the 3/4 chimney over those 4-6 coals. That is plenty to cook a lot of meat with. When going indirect, pour your coals on the intake side (right) and cook over the exhaust side (left) to get really good indirect heat for larger cuts of meat. Even reverse seared ribeyes. The adjustable height charcoal rack is a bonus although ive never had the need to use it.It is a bit heavy to be hauling around putting it on and off the bed of the truck at about 50lbs. But its well worth it for the solid build this is.
I have a vertical smoker that I bought last year. Its fantastic. Smokers are not ready to go out of the box. You have to assemble and season and SEAL. People complaining about loss of smoke escaping are the ones who didn't follow the steps.Assembly is relatively easy- take your time. Youll need a pair of pliers and a Phillips screwdriver. When you have to put in the side handles, loosen the legs first otherwise youll damage the paint. Otherwise, follow the instructions for everything else.Buy a package of lava lock- yes, thats what its called. Dont just stick it on; measure and use the adhesive. Wipe excess. Only put it on the bottom where the lid hits- all the way around.Put it on the inside of the smoke stack attachment- around the square and around the circle. ... MoreI have a vertical smoker that I bought last year. Only put it on the bottom where the lid hits- all the way around.Put it on the inside of the smoke stack attachment- around the square and around the circle. Let it sit for 24 hours. Dont cheat.Season the grates so your food doesnt stick.I used 10 briquettes and it immediately went up to 250 degrees and still holding after 30 minutes. This is a one meal smoker. Youre not cooking up a feast. 8 burgers; 3 or 4 burgers with a couple ears of corn. The dome of the lid is high enough so I can smoke 2 chickens or a 10 pound turkey- the only quirk would be adding briquettes when the temperature dips. You have to remove any food on 1 of the 2 grates, lift the grate , dump the hot coals, put the grate back on, put your meat back on, and resume. On the bright side, due to its size it reheats fast. The trouble with the ash pan is there is a raised button that has to be depressed to get the tray out. Youre going to have to wait until its cold or hope your gloves are good enough so you dont burn your fingers.Smoking is a lot of work, but the rewards are worth it. Theres also a lot of trial and error.Patience.
I dont have the space in the back to have a full sized grill/smoker and was using a Weber Smokey Joe with some makeshift enhancements to smoke with it.This was fairly easy to assemble. I had few issues initially that I resolved:1. Get good charcoal. I was using Lazzari lump charcoal but I couldnt get the grill hot enough for grilling with the vent configuration of this smoker/grill.2. Given this, I still think it could use another similar vent on the other side for when you want to use it as a grill.3. When smoking, it leaks like a sieve around the lid teams and where the lid sits on the base when closed. This was EASILY solved by using high heat smoker gasket tape for the lid and high heat silicone for those seams on the lid, around the top vent and the ... MoreI dont have the space in the back to have a full sized grill/smoker and was using a Weber Smokey Joe with some makeshift enhancements to smoke with it.This was fairly easy to assemble. Now smoke goes only out the vent where I want.I'm impressed at how well I can maintain temperature now with the seals and the better charcoal (Jealous Devil)I'd give it give stars if it was naturally sealing but its really no big deal to spend $20.
The Rambler is the new addition to our ever growing family of Oklahoma Joe’s products for our Smokehouse! I was looking for a small units that could handle the searing and that I could bring easily in outdoor events and tailgating! I’m more than happy to have pulled the trigger on this one!! It’s not that small and it’s sturdy with his 52 pounds of steel! I had some concerns about the charcoal tray, but when I saw the thickness of the metal crate I was impressed! It’s going to take a lot of burning to bend or melt! It’s very easy to assemble. I don’t think anything in that price bracket can rival with the Rambler! You get a lot for your buck!!! Well designed, great thinking in the building process and it’s looks just great!!!! Expected better quality. Unboxing: dropped the provided cast iron grate handle on the floor and it broke in half. The bottom ash tray had to be grinded in spots to slide in and out for cleaning. Initial use: The charcoal tray warped significantly. Will not hang flat - off by at about 3/4". After maybe 15 uses: body paint has bubbled up and started to peel off from both the lid and bottom. The grill now looks like crap. Would not purchase again.
