RODE gear is an excellent match between performance, reliability and price. This is very much a case of not getting what you pay for coz the performance and service easily exceeds the price point. PLUS their warranty and after-sales service is exceptional. No I don't work for Rode, or Mannys, I just use Rode a lot. I also use other mics and audio gear but for the price Rode is always on my first go to list. The NT3 is a great dialogue mic, warm and forgiving. Heck I've even boomed it for years (when my back and shoulders were in better condition coz man it is heavy on the end of a stick ! ). Now use 2 of them for ADR/voice overs so not lifting so much, but always carry one as a spare on shoots just in case.Had to grab one very last minute and Manny's were awesome - ... MoreRODE gear is an excellent match between performance, reliability and price. OK this is a condenser mic. It works with phantom power, but will also take a battery.I've used it for vocals and acoustic guitar, and it works extremely well.I've used dynamic mics as well, which are fine for live vocals (SM58 for example), but in the studio this is in a different class. The detail of reproduction is excellent, for the price, and you'd probably have to add another "0" to the price to get a discernable difference.Would definitely recommend.

A really good mic. I particularly like the fact that it does not need phantom power (the 9v battery does the job!). Sound wise it has a good response across the frequency range with a slight emphasis on the top end. If the singer is prone to sibilance this mic will reflect that - but a bit of thought about mic position and a small dip in EQ around 6 - 8 Khz does the trick. The top end sensitivity on 12 string guitar is wonderful - gives it a real 'shimmer'. Love it!

Awesome Microphone!
9 May 2013

I bought this mic to use for recording indoor dialogue in a low budget indie film production that will soon commence. I have performed several tests with this mic using a Tascam DR-40 Protable Recorder. The sound quality on this thing is amazing! Crisp and clear! The only thing that I can see that people wouldn't like about this mic is probably the weight. At the end of a boom pole it can get tiring after a while, but that doesn't bother me. If you are not using a dedicated preamp with this, you may have to raise the volume a bit in post; however the signal to noise ratio is so good that it wouldn't effect the quality. This is probably the best microphone I've ever purchased for such a low price!

Decent Acoustic Guitar Mic
8 March 2016

Purchased in 1999 this mic still works after all these years. It didn't get much use, as I only used it to record acoustic guitar. Nevertheless, it can do a lot more than just acoustic recording. Build quality is great, sound is excellent, a wide dynamic range, and frequency response. With small condensers mic placement is critical, and the NT3 is a lot more forgiving than my AKG C1000s.

Fantastic Sound
11 September 2017

Rode delivers with the NT3, crisp clear audio with low noise. I use it for recording DSLR dialogue and the cardioid pattern means I don't have to be super critical with aiming it. I use Neutrik connectors which do lock into the NT3, just give them a push, for a secure XLR connection. I mount it into an Audio Technica AT8415 shock mount, if it slips a bit in the vertical, I wrap a rubber band around the mic shaft to offer some purchase to the shock mount bands, keeps it secure. 4 stars due to weight, 5 stars for sound.

I borrowed a friends NT-3 for use as a live mike for the mandolin, I was very impressed. Clean, clear reproduction of the woody sound of an acoustic instrument. I was very pleasantly surprised and love the fact that I do NOT have to crowd the mike to be picked up...the cardioid pattern allows great flexibility.I decided to purchase one for myself and found the price to be very reasonable for the high quality of the sound reproduction.I did have the zipper of the storage pouch provided break and the wind cover is looser than I like but all in all a terrific mike. I highly recommend this mike as an upgrade from basic mikes..I think you will love the sound and the quality of this mike!

The Rode NT 3 is an excellent mike for recording large bodied acoustic guitars, and is worth the price for that use alone. The pickup pattern is very directional and can be beneficial for isolating a guitar in a live performance. It is not a mic I would use for my vocals and is too bright for recording mandolin or banjo. The one design complaint I have with this microphone is that the battery is not disconnected when the mic is switched off. To disconnect the battery the XLR jack has to be disconnected. The other complaints I have with this mic are the soft zipper pouch and the clip stand mount that came with this mike. It will not light if the battery is dead even if the mike is connected to a phantom power supply. The Rode NT 3's is build solid and the sound is of profession quality. This microphone is excellent for recording large bodied acoustic guitars. It captures the pick attack and the high end and rejects the low end that can muddy up a mix. It is my go mike for recording my Martin D-35 and D-12-35. I also like using this mike in combination with a large diaphragm condenser for recording mandolin.

Overall:I am singer and I use this mic. I own as well a senheisser e-855 and a Tc-Helicon MP-75. There is no comparison between the sound of this mic and the other two. The Tc helicon is very good too but it is made for people who sings very near the mic otherwise you have to put the level up and even sounds good, but the sound of the rode is just great, my partners in the band they just want me to use this, the sound is so clean, so natural, so warm, no comparison. The only problem is the pop, and the handnoise if you move it, playing at the studio and in a live show with an acoustic band, with a good antipop filter and if you leave it in the mic stand then wonderful, otherwise if you need to keep it in your hand and move around you better get another mic i I ... MoreOverall:I am singer and I use this mic. Anyway it doesn’t get the sounds in front of him, because it is quite directional. I can only say that I love its sound-t is just wonderful. But remember the hand noise and the pop. Ah, and the quality is very good, it is a hard mic, good price for the sound
