Battery unsuitable for small-handed adults.

There is nothing wrong with the lawnmower other than the battery handling procedure and the battery casing which are very difficult to manage. The battery seems to be designed for people who have big hands. My smaller, female hands have great difficulty depressing the release buttons on either side of the battery. I also have to try doing this whilst fighting off the lid of the battery casing. It is on a spring with no retainer to enable it to stay open during the battery removal process. The battery size also makes it difficult to remove from the charger. Again, the side buttons have to be depressed in order to release the battery.

We bought this unit Mid 2022. Good unit does about half the lawn on the battery. But it seems like there are some known manufacturing faults.Unit 1.The catcher flap lost its ability to keep closed causing the catcher to ope flicing clippings directly at you when mowing and the catcher would fall off.Unit 2.The trigger that you need to squeeze to keep the mower operating was faulty and would stop working every 2 minutes meaning you have to keep restarting it. Which seemed to drain the battery more quickly.Unit 3.After 4 mows the unit had the same issue as Unit 1.The Bunnings team made the replacement process very easy. Which is good or the whole ordeal would have been a lot worse. I do need to return unit 3 however - fingers crossed.

Good but dangerous - catcher leaves gap and doesn’t connect completely
10 September 2022

I had used the old 37cm ryobi 1 mower and loved it so I purchased this newer version. Everything is great and lots of improvements from the old one - however to keep the price the same they have cut corners on the grass catcher. It leaves a gap between the flap and the catcher so grass fly’s out (as do stones!) I’m really frustrated and tried everything to get it to fit properly so there will be no gap but it’s a fault in the design. I would suspect some will start off fitting fine and then as the cheap metal frame of the catcher moves it will not fit for all… the old ryobi catcher was so much better. Im going to have to take this back - it’s dangerous.

It’s a trap!
4 February 2023

I find ryobi’s sales tactic a disgrace. The battery lasts maybe 15 minutes. Want longer? Well, hand over another $300+ the guy behind the counter even admitted they are sole with bad batteries so people have to hand over more after the purchase… that’s just dirty. The charging is very slow. I mow half in the morning… the other half late afternoon…It is weak. It cannot go over thick grass. It struggles on a low height. It’s consistently cuts out over and over and over. I’ve never sworn so much in my life than when I have to mow. I’m sure the neighbours get a real kick out of it!Go for a different brand. This one is no good.

Just love this lightweight, tough little mower!
10 February 2023

I had been thinking about getting a battery-operated mower for some time, but delayed doing so because my old keystart Rover is still running fine. But my wife took the decision for me, and bought me this Ryobi for my birthday, which is just after Christmas. My son opened the box and set it up, and proceeded to spend days using it around the place. He loved it — but I couldn't get a go on my new "toy" myself! After Christmas I DID get to use it, and I too love it. Though relatively tiny, it is actually quite a tough little machine, and the beauty of battery-operated is that, if the going gets too tough and it conks out, it's a simple matter of moving it, depressing the ignition button, and squeezing the power handle on one or other side. No more pulling cords, cranking motors, flooding carburetters! But personally, what I find far and away the best feature is its incredible light weight. It is so effortless to use, especially on sloping ground. I have a steep bank in one spot, and all I have to do is hold on with one hand, let it run down the bank, and pull it back up. So easy. My wife now tells me I should sell the old petrol mower, and I guess I will, though it feels like selling an old mate. But at 82 it is just too heavy and awkward for me, so the Ryobi has clearly won that contest. Like I said, I love it!

My dad bought one so I mowed his lawn for him.Pros; light and easy to push in a straight lineCuts well, decent size catcher. Managed to mow entire lawn on 2 batteries, about 100m2Cons; stalls in medium to heavy grass, sir Walter and cooch and when it gets thick it will not cut it. My petrol mower would have handled it with ease, and it's not a flash one.Not a wide cut so takes longer than his old mower.Holding the power levers in gets tiring, takes quite a bit of constant pressure hold them in and keep them in, had to keep swaping from hand to hand.Doesn't turn corners easily, not sure why, I think there is to much contact between mower deck and ground.Overall it's quite good but Ryobi could still make improvements. If you have anything but a small lawn I'd ... MoreMy dad bought one so I mowed his lawn for him.Pros; light and easy to push in a straight lineCuts well, decent size catcher. Really badly built but hidden so users don't find out

Had reason to repair the previous model of this mower the OLM1836HSince buying spare parts for Bunnings Ryobi products is problematic - see other reviewsIn this case the electronics module inside it is proven faulty so mower is likely to be scrapped as the module is near the price of a new mower and you have to fight Bunnings for expensive spare parts to get one.As I am a retired electronics technician I decided to open the sealed electronics module as I had nothing to lose at this stage, as the mower is heading for landfill anyway.Inside it I found some of the worst soldering I have seen in 50+ years in the game.So I re-soldered the component that had fallen out of the circuit board due solely to poor soldering, and why the mower no longer worked, cleaned ... MoreHad reason to repair the previous model of this mower the OLM1836HSince buying spare parts for Bunnings Ryobi products is problematic - see other reviewsIn this case the electronics module inside it is proven faulty so mower is likely to be scrapped as the module is near the price of a new mower and you have to fight Bunnings for expensive spare parts to get one.As I am a retired electronics technician I decided to open the sealed electronics module as I had nothing to lose at this stage, as the mower is heading for landfill anyway.Inside it I found some of the worst soldering I have seen in 50+ years in the game.So I re-soldered the component that had fallen out of the circuit board due solely to poor soldering, and why the mower no longer worked, cleaned up the rest of the circuit board .Put the module back in the mower and off it went again. If you knew the poor build quality hidden under the sealing compound of its internal electronics you would never buy another Chinese made Ryobi tool.I wasn't supposed to find this dirty secret, but now I have..

Sorry, not so good...

Unfortunately Mr Ryobi but this just doesn't cut the mustered.... Or my grass.... I have over 10 Ryobi tools, they are good and they are usually my default cos I know it will suit my needs and will be reliable. Not in this case. I'm baffled why this gets so many 5 star reviews. I got through 1/3 my 10x6m size lawn and I burnt through 13.2Ah worth of batteries in just under 10min (2x 4Ah, 1x 1.5Ah and 2x 1.2Ah)... My kikuyu grass grew extra long during the recent rains, even with a petrol mower I would have to cut the height in stages, so I know my grass is thick and dense especially in spring. First 2 passes on the highest settings being 5 & 6 it was fine. Going from setting 4 to 3 was a no go and I want it on setting 1. Can't handle it. First 2 passes on the highest settings being 5 & 6 it was fine. Going from setting 4 to 3 was a no go and I want it on setting 1. Can't handle it. On top of that the batteries where super hot after use, meaning they shouldn't be charged until they cool as that's how you kill your battery (thanks Mr Dyson for not telling me that one ahead of time). The other bad features are, you have to hold the trigger for it to work which can be fatiguing. The handle doesn't pack down easily for storage (Does on the next model up). Catcher has gaps and lets grass through (minor issue). Made of a lot of cheap plastic. Not heavy enough to push through moderately thick but short (height setting 4) grass, so it's actually harder to mow. This last issue is actually a deal breaker for me, the body sits too low to the ground and gets caught up on the grass to easily (still on height setting 4. I assume this is for safety reasons)....My cheap electric whipper snipper was the ducks guts, this mower is little more than a toy..... The positives. It would absolutely suit a very small area with thinner grass so long as you kept the length low by trimming often. It's very light and easy to manoeuvre and store. Plus all the electric benefits like no fuel and low noise ect... If they gave it a bit more oomph it think I'd like it.. Otherwise sorry but I say avoid unfortunately.

User friendly but not enough power. Get the model that draws power from two batteries.
15 January 2023

This product works well. However it suffers from not quiet enough power. I live in Melbourne and mow once a week. This is not regular enough to keep the grass at a length that the mower can move smoothly forward through without cutting out. I have to move the mower forward and back each step. It's frustrating, time consuming and I burn through two 4.0Ah batteries for 60m2 lawn.I suggest you spend the extra money for the next model which can draw power from two 18V batteries at once for an additional 25% power. This keeps you in the 18V One+ ecosystem for all your tools.
