I purchased this item to replace an older portable HDD which was not that portable and extremely slow. This Sandisk drive is literally one fifth the size of my old unit and is much lighter. It is also much faster and will hopefully prove to be more reliable, although only time will tell in that respect. Note that the full 4TB is not available. If memory serves me correctly I recall that the usable memory was about 3.7TB before I started transferring files to it. My only negative comment would have to be the supplied cable which is only 10 centimetres long excluding the plugs at each end. As I use a tower PC this meant I had to replace it with a longer cable or the drive would have been left hanging in mid air. Overall, this is an great piece of kit and excellent ... I have used G-Drive and SanDisk portable SSDs for years with no issues.Bought 2 of these in January to use as rotating backup drives. Each failed (one twice!) for no apparent reason, the volume does notcontain a recognized file system, unfortunately AFTER the B&H return window closed. The only option was to reformat, thus all data was lost. It is baffling that an SSD can function flawlessly one minute and not know its own name the next. All the recent reviews citing the same experience with both this and the Extreme Pro 4TB model strongly suggest bad batches. SanDisk Support willingly initiated RMAs to replace both drives, no questions asked, which seems to support bad batches, as do the deep price discounts. Not sure I'll trust the replacements. The drive corrupted for the first time after a week of use. Formatting the drive fixed it that time, but formatting isn't a long-term solution as I needed this drive for video editing... which you can't exactly do if your drive stops mounting! It happened a second time yesterday after working perfectly fine in the morning. I was always extra careful to close all apps using it (Final Cut, Resolve) and to eject the drive before unplugging it. And it still corrupted (greyed out in Disk Utility). I tried every suggested troubleshooting tip at least three times, nothing worked. Now I have a $400 paperweight that was at least on a generous discount from B&H.And don't get me started on Sandisk customer support. That whole company is a joke. They make horrible SSDs, ... I love this drive, I have the 4 TB rated at 1050MB/s. I tested the drive when I received it and it tested out just a little higher than advertised. How often does that happen. I also tested it after I had loaded 2.5 TB of images on to it. It still performed as advertised 1050MB/s. I was so pleased with the drive that I ordered a second drive to replace my older model SanDisk drive. One piece of advice thought. You have to have the correct ports on your laptop or PC. You need to have a minimum of USB3.1 (10GB) to get the full read write speed. My MS Surface laptop studio was fine, but I had to buy a $29 card for my Dell desktop to get the full speed performance. Using these drives allows me to take my entire 4.5 TB photo and Lightroom catalogs on the road with me ... MoreI love this drive, I have the 4 TB rated at 1050MB/s. I have an M1 16-inch MacBook and have owned three version 2 SanDisk SSD drives. Every single one of them corrupted all the files that I put on it, and I lost precious photos and videos that I will never get back. I thought it was just a malfunction with the unit particular unit so I had it returned twice. This is a well-known crisis among photographers and videographers in SanDisk is being willfully ignorant, and still trying to peddle these disastrous hard drives. If you own a PC then maybe everything is fine but if you are on an M1 or an M2 Mac DO NOT BUY THIS. There is no workaround to fix it. I've tried to format it 1 million different ways and every single time it will corrupt your data. This review is solely about this sandisk product B&H is always great and ... I've used the Sandisk Extreme SSD drives for a good while now, mainly the 2tb versions, but for this project i needed more space and went for the 4TB version.Just a few days after copying all my files to the SSD, and formatting my memory cards, the drive stops working.Mac OS is telling me to either eject, ignore or format.I tried everything from repairing with disk utility to whatever other tips i could find online about it.When digging deeper, and looking through reviews on Amazon, it seems like i am not the only one with this problem.Especially with the 4TB version.A lot of people have just like me been very happy with their 2TB versions, but the 4TB ones have been a disaster. There's no way I'll trust it to work properly again after formatting it 4 ... Bought the 4TB version. It came with exFAT, so changed to NTFS first thing to be able to trim it and for better fault tolerance. Have copied ~600GB to it twice (12GB/file on average) and didn't notice it getting particularly hot. Throughput was steady at around 300MB/s. Used a 1m USB cable, the one provided with the drive stayed in the box. Sandisk should have more consideration for the environment and skip this item altogether. It would be a good idea to specify the max. current consumption of this drive. A lot of mishaps experienced by users can likely be related to USB ports with insufficient power output. Using SSDs with PLP (power loss protection) instead of WD blue would probably make more sense in a portable device.
I was very excited to have a 4TB external SSD. I connected it to my Mac Mini (2018 version) and formatted the drive as HFS+. I started copying my files over, and everything worked perfectly at first. After about half a day of organizing and transferring data, roughly 1.5TB, the drive unmounted itself. It had become corrupt and could not be mounted or repaired with Disk Utility / First Aid. I returned the drive for a replacement, thinking it was a random bad piece of hardware. When the replacement drive arrived, I decided to format it as APFS just in case the latest Apply filesystem was somehow better at handling large external SSDs. I returned the drive for a replacement, thinking it was a random bad piece of hardware. When the replacement drive arrived, I decided to format it as APFS just in case the latest Apply filesystem was somehow better at handling large external SSDs. Unfortunately, while copying files for a similar amount of time, the replacement drive started acting flakey and also unmounted itself. Again, there was no way to mount or repair the drive.I reformatted the drive (again as APFS) and tried a third time. This time, I went slowly and carefully with the data transfer and stopped every so often to unmount the drive and allow the system to clean itself up. I go further this time with >2TB of data transferred, but ultimately the same failure. Several days over the course of the week were completely wasted, and now I'm shopping for a new 4T SSD from another vendor.
I recently purchased this Sandisk SSD drive, and I must say, it has exceeded my expectations in every way. Its speed, reliability, and build quality make it an excellent investment for anyone looking to boost their system's performance. I highly recommend it to anyone in need of a high-performance storage solution.
Good points: Small (extremely portable). Comes with connectors for both USB-A and USB-C, so it connects to everything. Seems to be fast. Optional whole-disk encryption is very easy to use, keeps private data private. Bought it on sale at about half price, making it an exceptional value.Concern: On Windows, less usable storage than I expected. Explanation:On any device, files have 2 sizes: the actual size, and the amount of disk space they use. On this SSD, files are allocated in multiples of 1MB. So a file of 100 bytes uses 1MB of disk space. A file of 1.001MB uses 2MB of disk space. This wasted space was a problem for me. I replaced a 4TB hard drive with this SSD. With 1.5 million files, the hard drive had nearly 2TB free. The SSD has less than 0.5TB free. The ... MoreGood points: Small (extremely portable).
