I still have to make sure to fine-tune the firmness of the pad to strike the best balance, but a balance was impossible with any other pad.The only time I don't use this pad is for winter camping- it's not remotely warm enough. I have to use a 2.5 pad for that with a closed-cell foam pad under that- quite heavy and less comfortable. The Sea to Summit pump sack is the fastest at inflating pads, and I've had pads from all the major players. This pad is also pretty quiet. Moving around at night still sounds like a balloon a bit, but it's more low-frequency balloon- no so much with the high-pitched squeaks and crinkling sounds of other pads.It took me about one night to get the hang of the double valve and to learn to make adjustments inflating or deflating while sleeping on the thing. It's very easy!I love this pad. I wish they had an 7+ R-value version for winter camping! Alas, it's hard to imagine anybody in Perth Australia thinks about winter camping much.I've put about 200 miles of hiking on this pad with 0 holes or issues. I have no complaints about this and struggle to even imagine potential improvements.I have a 2 inch pad from Sea to Summit that I bought before the Ether was released. That was similar but so much less comfortable due to being half the thickness. That pad did get 2 pin holes on the trail. I could fix one hole with the included patch kit and needed to submerge in a bath tub with water to find the second tiny hole. Since patching I've had zero issues with that- now my loaner pad for friends.

Dissapointed.

Being comfortable and a good nights rest, even on the trail, is paramount to me. Looking at this pad and all the good reviews I thought it would be extremely comfortable and was entirely prepared to pack its slightly larger size and additional few ounces in the name of comfort. Sadly, for me, it just isnt. Fully inflated you can feel the pattern in the form of uneven pressure. Deflating just a little does help but then I noticed if I roll to my side (side sleep) my hip can contact the ground unless the mat is kept essentially fully inflated. This was actually really surprising considering the roughly 4" of thickness. For me this design just didnt have the support. I compared it to a Nemo Tensor, and Thermarest Xlite and, honestly, the Thermarest was the most comfortable since the pressure is uniform and, partially deflated for comfort, the Thermarest also offered the best support on the hip when on my side. A little odd considering its the thinnest of the 3 but makes sense from a design standpoint since Thermarest is made up of many more small baffle chambers within the pad so it should resist air migration the best while the Ether XT is practically a 4" thick void which is why my hip went right to the ground.Everything else about the pad is good. The combination pump sack/stuff sack is a really good idea and inflates the pad very fast. The valve is one of the best designs you can find. The pad itself seemed of good quality. It felt warm, but not uncomfortably so. It didnt seem any more noisy than the Nemo either which is touted as a quiet pad. Really bummed about it not being better in the comfort department.

I had gotten used to it, but finally decided to throw some patches on one day. I found SEVEN holes on the pad, all on the top of the pad, which was very surprising to me. After patching, I took it back out on an 8-day trip and it was like new. The next 8-day trip, it was back to deflating. It would be almost flat by about 3 or 4 AM. I'm hesitant to even patch it again at this point, because I know it will continue to get holes in the same place. You can see pictures of some of the patches below.I've loved this pad, but I will be looking at other options going forward.

Nearly Perfect!

I've used this S2S Ether Light XT insulated air sleeping pad now on several camping and backpacking trips. Most recently I used it on the North Country Trail in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. In short, I really like this pad! It's thick enough that my shoulders and hips never bottom out. It's not the lightest or smallest packing air matress, but it is pretty light and it does pack down easily and relatively small - just a bit bigger than a Nalgene bottle. (I got a large size and it's awesome - I'm 6'1 and have plenty of room. My arms never fall off!)When I inflate it to my liking it really is pretty close to sleeping on a regular mattress. It's easy to inflate with the included pump/stuff sack. I blow into the sack (from 10-15 inches away) and then roll that air right into the mattress. It takes less than two minutes for me to inflate it. The pillow lock system also works great with my Cocoon pillow - it'll work with most pillows that have a cloth material similar to the Sea to Summit pillows. I locked my pillow on to those velcro-like spots, put my head into my mummy bag, and the pillow stayed locked all night, even when I rolled around.I've found that the insulated version is good for me down to around 35 degrees, give or take. On a 28 degree night I did get a cold spot under my hip but fixed that by putting my sit pad under that spot. At 35 degrees and above it's perfect. (Note: I'm a slightly warmer sleeper.)The only negative of this pad for me is that it does sound a little like rubbing a balloon on skin when you roll around. It's not crinkly, and it's not obnoxiously loud, but there is some balloon sort of noise to it.All in all I really love this sleeping pad. I don't have to look around any more because I'm settled on it!

I didn't love this sleeping pad (regular size), but I think that's just bc it wasn't right for me. It was very narrow feeling and maybe that's just something I'd have to get used to but it felt like I was just trying to stay super still so I wouldn't roll off the side. Comfort wise, it's definitely plush feeling and if you sleep still or are just better at backpacking than me the width is probably fine for you. The pump sack/stuff sack combo was a nice feature and easy to use. It is noisy when you move around, but not in a way that was a big deal or would make me not buy it if I were fine with it otherwise. Sleep quality is always an issue for me even at home, so I just think this particular item didn't work great for me. So I'm giving this 3 stars because of my personal experience with it, but I can understand why others like it, so I would suggest trying this pad if you're interested in it. Also, I probably would have faired better with the large size. This was my first backpacking trip.

Perfect for side sleepers

Easily the most comfortable mat I've owned. It's easy to inflate, and the integrated pump is a genius piece of design. Packing away is very easy and takes a couple of minutes on a bad day. There's enough room in the bag for my Aeros pillow as well.I'm a side sleeper, and was able to sleep very comfortably without waking up with a sore shoulder. Miraculously, the mat came out unscathed (although I'm not willing to go round 2), so small sticks or rocks should be no issue. I wouldn't recommend it as a dog bed.All round, I can't fault this mat for me. It's comfortable, warm, light and easy. It's pricey, but snag it on sale and sleep like a baby.

Female - 40yrs and not a light weight anymore :(After many decades of hiking and surviving ( comfortably) with a close cell foam mat and average sleeping bag, back trauma found me struggling to get any quality of sleep. After doing significant research into mats and coming down to this or the Thermorest NeoAir Xtherm. Weighing up all the pros and cons for my situation. I decided, as a side sleeper, and with comfort for my back being priority, that this was the best option (also for the bank account). I also decided to stick with the regular tapered rectangle. (for weight and cost reasons) I also splashed out and paired this mat with the Sea to Summit Accent III sleeping bag to give added warmth (also not the lightest or smallest but good price for the great value you get!) My first test was at home, to get the air comfort level right, and I am glad I did. This mat is far more comfy when not filled tight with air as this allows the mat to support and cushion around you as needed. Since then I have used this mat on three trips with over night temps from 4 degrees to - 3 degrees. On all trips I slept warm and comfortably (I still just use my pack with clothing layers etc inside for my pillow) to the point where I noted I hardly moved during the nights and could stay comfortably on one side the majority of the night. I initially thought I should have gone for the rectangular regular rather than the tapered because I am a restless sleeper, but to be honest, I did not have a problem even though I use the full length and width of the mat. I did not find the mat noisy at all. When initially getting into bed, I felt the usual cold I do in my upper thighs, but after doing a few 'in-bag-exercises" to build heat, found that I did not feel the cold and certainly was not woken by it throughout the nights. In the mornings I didn't struggle with back pain like I previously have. Generally I felt amazing, the best hiking sleeps I have had in years. Overall I was beyond pleasantly surprised with the performance of this mat and bag for my situation.Advice 1. Be confident in why you want this mat and what personal needs it is meeting. (side sleeping, warmth etc) 2. Know what you are willing to sacrifice and the reason you are doing so. ie) weight for comfort / size for cost and weight. 3. Before taking it 'out' for the first time, test it out at home to get your comfort air level right - this makes the world of difference. 4. Know that you are getting value for money. Happy Hiking!

Sea to Summit Ether Light XT Insulated Sleeping Mat Tapered Small
2 December 2022

I have just tested this mat on a bike packing trip and I am very pleased! I had the most comfortable sleep I have ever had in a lightweight tent. I used it with the Aeros pillow (which I bought ages ago and had never used) which it is designed to integrate with. The pillow attaches to the mat with self adhesive Velcro patches that are supplied with the mat. Although I was skeptical, the pillow stayed in place. The temperature was quite mild so I can’t comment on the the insulation qualities yet. It is nice and compact when storing and rolling in it up was very easy. Thanks Tom’s Outdoors for great service and competitive pricing as well as having the live stock availability!

Super comfy but super noise

I was looking for a relatively light weight pad for backpacking that would be good comfort for a side sleeper. The ease of inflation, the pad thickness, and the comfort level are all winners for this pad. There are two main drawbacks that I am not sure I can live with. The first is the noise when moving around. This is by far the noisiest sleeping pad I've ever had or been around. If you have any knowledge of the SpongeBob squeaky boots episode, you will have a great reference point for what I am talking about. It was loud and distracting enough to wake up fellow tent campers whenever I moved. The second issue is the width of the pad. I am 5'7" but relatively broad-shouldered, and while laying on my back my arms would fall off the edge of the pad. I am 5'7" but relatively broad-shouldered, and while laying on my back my arms would fall off the edge of the pad. I wish the 25" width was available in a regular-length pad.Adjusting the inflation tension on the pad was very easy, and the overall quality is excellent. I own a lot of Sea to Summit products, from pillows to down blankets to cookware and they have never let me down. Love their stuff. I just don't know if I can live with this pad's noisiness and narrow width.

I usually use a foam pad. I have a couple of Klymit inflatables that have given me zero issue, and I was thru hiking the SHT, so why not maximize my sleep by getting the most comfortable ultralight pad on the market? well it sprung many leaks (by day 3) that were never fully patched because I couldn't find them. the two I did patch after only a week were on the top, in the "button" area (which leads me to believe manufacturing defect). it gradually got worse until I was waking up on the ground 3 plus times a night after a week and a half. luckily I ended up with a replacement pad at around mile 160 (due to the kindness of a stranger and a husky that didn't want his torso length foam pad). I'm sure this was a factory defect, but that's not allowed when you're dealing ...Β MoreI usually use a foam pad. I'm sure this was a factory defect, but that's not allowed when you're dealing with this price and the trips a pad like this will be brought on.Also, as comfortable as the pad is, (when it held air) the 4-in height made my Nemo Hornet 2 feel cramped and small. S2S is a great company, but the qc needs to be tightened up.
