I still own Baitrunner 4500. Original, not even "B" modification, and it is still my workhorse. 20 years! That is when I was need to buy a new reel, I was very skeptical/cautious going from model to model... But this new "D" already made it's reputation, I did not worry much... And guess what? I was right! This reel has incredibly good from day 1. Casting: above my expectations. Line winding: much better than any big reel I ever had. Drags are good (meet high expectations). Weight is OK. Ongoing test - durability. My son's 4000D is still good after ~10 years, so my expectations are high!

I only bought this reel because I almost lost my VS 275 while bunker chunking in the middle of the night for stripers. The rod was in my sand spike with the drag set normal. I always loosen the the drag after the cast but forgot because I wanted to change out the bait on my other rod. Bass hit my chunk and took off. Very close call and what’s worse is that I dropped the fish.I’ve been using it on the north and south shores of Long Island ever since and it’s been doing great so far. Holds up to pretty harsh conditions. Looking forward to using it this fall when I’m throwing live eels along the south shore inlets.

I absolutely love the shimano Baitrunner series of reels . Bcf are really competitive when it comes to prices, and have great knowledge and experience when it comes to picking and Choosing the right size of reel to suit the fish I want to target. Thank you Bcf.

Firstly I am a Shimano man for 35 years and recently decided to upgrade my old Baitrunners that are still going strong but I wanted some heavier muscle. In regards to the 8000D two things to look out for are firstly make sure you match it with the PERFECT rod as can cause balance and spooling problems.Secondly I thought I would like the big EGG Handle but no it just didn’t work for me so have ordered two NEW smaller handles off the 6000 model at a horrendous cost of nearly 20-30 % of the whole reel......Spares are far too expensive
I bought this reel in haste when i realised my 4500 baitrunnner had snapped at the T piece / rod mount. It was hardly used!!This 8000 is not as smooth as the older models and the handle is oddly large and feels unbalanced.Shimano wouldnt warranty their 10 yr reel warranty even though my reel was obviously as new condition and under 10yrs. BCF only hold sales history for 2yrs.Unfortunatley in last 12 mths ive also bought a Saragosa and and Tyrnos 20.Im done with Shimano and BCF was once a very loyal customer to both.Going to Fishing World and Diawa / Penn etc
Reel packed up- which I had no issue with. When I took the reel back I was made to feel like I was doing something wrong and got a heap of statements like mmmm this doesn't happen and the line looks like its been used a lot. The line and reel where 3 weeks old, used for two days and both purchased and installed by bcf melville and on my membership. They ended up replacing the reel but IM NOT GOING BACK EVER .Anaconda here I come. Please tell your staff they are not detectives and what their responsibilities are with warranties. Didn't want something for nothing just wanted the reel I bought to work.
This is absolutely the finest reel I have ever owned for surf fishing or other types of boat fishing. The bait runner is great and it's also durable and an all out great reel. I have over 26 setups in my basement of rod and reel combos and this reel is by far the best. I have 3 of them, 2 for me and one for my wife! Great Purchase, and Tackle Direct stands by it's product.
I have used Shimono since I was in high school and always considered it to be the gold standard at it's price point. An I was always willing to pay $100 or so more for what I felt was a superior r eel until now. To my susprise I had also ordered a Peen live feeder in a comporable size which was 75.00 less than the Shimono. After a days worth of casting and reeling, I came to the comclusion that they were tied in performance for my taste. (Now I'm sure some will dispute my findings) But I could not justify the cost increase without the performance increase. So I sent two Shimonos back and purchased two Penn's.
These were originally designed by Shimano for Carp fisherman back in the 80's. It didn't take long before ALL bait fisherman realized the potential and great design and soon they were used world-wide for not only Carp but Saltwater and Freshwater species alike. There have since been many companies replicate the design and they work great as well, but Shimano will always be the Baitrunner kings in my eyes.
I went on a fishing gear buying & fishing binge these last 4 weeks, buying 3 shimano reels (4000d, 6000d & ci4+4000hgfb) and 4 poles to add to my collection and have fished going on 5 straight Saturdays to test my new toys. Let me start off by saying that I do most of my fishing in Southern California jetties & beaches catching different bass, perch, corbina, halibut, bonito, etc and i do love these baitrunners. I own 10 of them. I decided to buy the 4000d because the 4000oc is my favorite reel in these conditions. The drag of the 4000d vs 4000oc is somewhat louder which I like (lets people around me know I'm hooked on! lol) & side by side the 4000d looks like its made a little better. Its polished unlike the oc. The material I dont know so compare it side by side. ... MoreI went on a fishing gear buying & fishing binge these last 4 weeks, buying 3 shimano reels (4000d, 6000d & ci4+4000hgfb) and 4 poles to add to my collection and have fished going on 5 straight Saturdays to test my new toys. Its polished unlike the oc. The material I dont know so compare it side by side. The oc treated me well for several years now. I partnered the 4000d on a shimano 7' med to med/heavy for jetties and bays and to a 9' okuma med/heavy for surf fishing. On the 9' rod it casts very far. Im curious to see how the retrieve compares to the stradic. I did break it in the 1st time I used it catching 7 perch, 2 croakers, 4 calicos & 18 mackys last Saturday, all released. The main thing I would tell you is if you cast a lot & you hold your pole to fish like I do this is a great fun option weighing around 13 oz. I love the baitrunner feature when my 7 yr old son fishes with me. No need for a hook set most times if the bite is decent enough, my son just starts cranking & he's on. And oh, you dont lose your pole and reel if you do set it down when a fish bites. Btw I returned the 6000d. 6000d is an awesome reel if you bait fish, boat fish or keep it on a stand but it was too heavy for me for the type of fishing I do. I just got the ci4+4000hgfb but have not used it yet but will this Saturday. Wow is the stradic light at only 8.1 oz & partnered with my 9' pole the setup weighs just under 1 lb. I've always been a baitrunner guy so im excited to check out how the stradic will compare. Buy the reel for your fishing situation. Tight lines!
