The classic SPD PD-M520 pedal is a tried and trusted pedal because of its durability and good value for money. Simple to use thanks to a double-sided clip-in system. The Shimano PD-M520 enables you to clip in on both sides of the pedal. That makes this the ideal pedal for anyone who's just starting out with cycling, but more advanced cyclist can also have a lot of fun with this. The pedal isn't expensive, but does incorporate the same technology as the more expensive XT and XTR series. These pedals are a lot heavier than its more expensive cousins, however, but that does bring down the price tag. Easy to clean thanks to the open binding design The PD-M520 pedal has an open binding design, so mud won't get stuck in it. Plus, the spring tension can be adjusted to make clipping in and out easier or harder. The pedals come with SH-M51 cleats with three degrees of float. In short, the Shimano PD-M520 pedals are durable all-rounders suitable for many situations!

I can’t fault 99Bikes but I am disappointed with the Garmin edge 130plus after it stopped itself with a blank “ride in progress” screen mid ride. No data then recorded until a manual reset later. Not something That can be done safely while riding at 40kmh in the middle of a group.“Hang on everyone - I need to reset my Garmin”. Googling, it seems to be an unresolved issue for the last 3 years. It only seems to occur with multiple sensor inputs (HR, Cad, Spd) connected.Should have bought the 530!

I bought these pedals for a 2000 km bike touring trip from Tallinn to Budapest. It was the best idea I could've had. I just switched from flats to spd and they make a very huge difference in terms of efficiency and I also feel like that my legs, due to the possibility of pulling the pedals as well - do not hurt anymore on long rides how they used to, especially my knees. I don't experience any knee pain anymore. These pedals are super sturdy, I find them super high quality for a relatively low price. Absolutely recommended.

Feels solid and together, amazing power transfer
6 January 2024

Pedals clip in reassuringly , power transfer feels solid with no power loss. Has enough wiggle room to feel comfortable while feeling solid with the bike. Tension adjustment can go low enough for a lighter rider (like me) to have no trouble clipping in or out. Looks fantastic on my bike. No complaints, perfect for me.

Good First Clipless Pedals
14 August 2023

Great clipless pedal for the price! This is my first clipless/clip-in pedal. I bought it for my road bike despite this being an MTB pedal. It's a little on the heavy side, so if you are looking for light-weight, this is not for you. I use these with the Shimano AM5 shoes, which are great. Easy clip-in/out action, with a satisfying *click* when the cleat locks in. Easy to maintain, and has been serving me well for several hundred miles at this point. Thanks, Shimano!

Really great pedals, they just don't work for me for MTB.
10 June 2024

I bought these to try to give clipless another go for my trail bike, but clipless is just not for me for mountain biking. I greatly prefer the feel of flats since they have effectively zero float. The float in these pedals is a little unnerving to me being used to spikey flat pedals, it feels like it limits control or confidence on tech. But, pedals are a super personal decision and these are very well made. Much better than the spd compatible non-shimano pedals I have used. Adjustment is easy and they feel solid.

Review of Shimano PD-M520 SPD MTB Pedals, Black
22 August 2024

Loud clicking noise coming from both pedals when pedalling after only 30 dry miles. Axles spin freely and smoothly, but the noise is definitely coming from the pedals as replacing them with another pair makes the clicking noise disappear. Sprayed some WD40 on the springs, but that didn't help either. So likely the bearings already need servicing :(.

Shimano Deore m520L pedal
26 September 2023

So this is a great pedal for most purposes: I'm planning to use thrm on a gravel bike, but are great value mountain pedals. They aren't not super light of course but are an acceptable weight. Good mud clearance. Easy to set up, with good range of spring adjustment and good old pedal wrench flats. I just wish it had come in silver, as shown online. Black looks good when first on the bike, silver looks good forever. That might have added that little bit of excitement to what is, in the end, a solid, smart product that appeals to the head perhaps a bit more than the heart.

Simple, durable and good value
8 June 2024

This is the third pair of M520’s I have bought, the others are still functioning well. Whilst some may consider them cheap and cheerful, from my own experience they do a decent job, are reliable in the way they operate in conjunction with the cleats on my shoes and have proved long lasting. So, they may not be as light, or have the same level of adjustment as more expensive options, for me they do the job just fine. The Tredz website is easy to navigate, price was competitive and the pedals arrived quickly and well packaged.

Simple, secure, easily adjusted system.

Sturdy simplicity of operation and adjustment in the pedals and cleats. The pedals are not in any way "mountain bike" specific - they are perfectly suited to a road/ race bike. The pedals are two sided, both being the same, so you don't have to fuss with getting the correct side up. The tightness of the pedal grip, which really means how hard it is to get the shoe's cleat IN to the pedal (because once in the cleat will not ever casually pull out) is easily adjusted, independently on each side of the pedal, so if one side is more difficult to get in to, just back off its tightness screw a tad. The cleats are made for any shoe that has the two parallel channels, not the 3 scew hole system. I have a couple pari of Specialized shoes with the correct "drilling" and the system is great. To get a shoe OUT of a pedal, you just vigorously turn your heel outward and the cleat instantly extracts from the pedal. Terrific system and... it is inexpensive! The package of pedals and cleats can be currently found for less than $55.
