Sigma 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM Contemporary Lens for Nikon
Another addition to the Sigma Global Vision Contemporary family is the SSigma 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM Contemporary Lens. Having 4 FLD with 1 SLD glass elements, the lens would give incredible contrasted and sharp images up to the focal length controlling aberration. It runs in an optimised hyper sonic motor (HSM) that guarantees quiet and fast autofocus. As a super compact high-ratio zoom lens, the enhanced optical stabiliser (OS) balances camera shakes. To control the light passing through the lens, a minimum aperture of f22 is paired with 72mm filter size to produce high quality images. It is compatible only with APS-C DSLR Cameras. Focal length simulator The focal length changes the angle of view in an image. The longer the focal length, the smaller the angle of view and the greater the magnification. DC for digital These are special lenses designed for APS-C size sensors so that the image circle matches the smaller size of the image sensor of most digital SLR cameras. Their specialised design gives these lenses the ideal properties for digital cameras, the compact and lightweight construction is an added bonus! Optical stabilizer This function utilises a built-in mechanism that compensates for camera shake. It dramatically expands photographic possibilities by alleviating camera movement when shooting by hand held camera. Quiet and fast autofocusing This lens uses a motor driven by ultrasonic waves to provide a quiet, high-speed AF. USB Dock Compatibility Sigma has developed special software (SIGMA Optimization Pro) that can update the lens firmware and adjust parameters such as focus.

However, at this price point, I'm willing to sacrifice the water resistance for the amazing zoom capabilities of this lens.2. The is a very slight goggle or loosens at the lens mount point (rotationally), meaning that when I zoom in and out the lock pin in the mount seems a tiny bit loose. This is very minimal and I'm okay with it.

I purchased this lens for a Canon Rebel t7i hoping for a closer view into a great horned owl's nest with chicks and also to get a closer view of a roosting screech owl. This lens did not meet my expectations. The pictures and videos taken did not even provide the view that my EOB Ranger binoculars do. It is also a very heavy lens. I really could not imagine enjoying a hike in Yellowstone or Grand Tetons with such a heavy lens--and my tiny Sony RX 100 seems to do a better job. I am returning the lens. Adorama provides terrific customer service and information, so I would definitely shop here again for my next purchase!

This lens replaced a Sigma 18-250 mm telephoto zoom lens. The new lens is used with a Canon SL1. My first tests with the lens indicated that the image quality is excellent, except at 300 mm, at which image focus is slightly soft. Image softness could have been caused by atmospheric haze or camera shake; more testing is needed.Because the filters were "free," I had low expectations for their quality. However, I took pictures with and without the UV and polarizing filters mounted, and did not discern any image degradation with the filters. I was also pleased to see that images recorded with the filters showed no trace of vignetting.Over the range 18 mm -- 55 mm, I see no difference in image quality between the Sigma lens and the 18 -- 55 mm Canon EFS "kit" lens ... MoreThis lens replaced a Sigma 18-250 mm telephoto zoom lens. The Sigma lens is going to be essentially permanently mounted on the SL1.The lens-camera combination will be used primarily for scenic and wildlife photography. The SL1 has movie recording capability, a feature that is new to me. I tested it with the camera set on intermediate movie quality. The image quality was excellent, but when the camera was panned, the lens took a moment to refocus itself on subjects that were closer or farther than the original subjects. Also, when shooting handheld, twisting the zoom adjustment was difficult to do without rotating and shaking the camera. When the zoom setting was changed, the lens took a second or two to refocus. The bundle was shipped in a sturdy package with ample padding, and all of the advertised items were present. I was slightly disappointed that the Sigma lens was not accompanied by a lens case.

This is only just fresh out of the box, but I like what I see so far. I bought it to replace the kit lens that came with my first Canon DSLR, and it outperforms it my a wide margin. The zoom range is great, and it appears that the glass gives better light transmission: under, as far as I could tell, identical lighting conditions I got one extra f-stop, and the colors were much more "punchy" than with the old Canon lens. At the long end, 300 mm, I did see some chromatic aberration against a bright sky, but that is to be expected, and it wasn't bad. Focus was fast (though this was under good light - I don't know how it will be in darker conditions), and the zoom is easy to use. While I am not expecting the same quality of wildlife photos I get from my 300 f4 L, this is much more convenient to carry around all day, and it does a perfectly acceptable job - I was able to get a decent photo of a hummingbird on the feeder (cropped but not resized image attached). In addition, it was a great deal, and it arrived two days earlier than expected, even with the free shipping.
First, let me be clear: I think this is a very good travel lens offering the flexibilty of focal lengths that such a situation demands. I took comparison shots against a Canon 17-55mm lens, both set @ 55mm, and the Sigma shot was noticeably sharper and clearer; it seemed to have better contrast as well as sharpness. Then I wanted to compare close-up images - I'm interested mainly in insect photography - so I compared this lens @ 300 with my Canon 300 F4 prime using a ruler as my subject. Both these images have the ruler at 1.5m distance, which is the Canon's MFD. What a shock I got. I've heard of focus breathing - the change of a lens's effective focal length at closer focus distances - but this is surely an extreme example of it. As you can see from the attached image, the Sigma @ 300 shows twice as much ruler as the Canon 300 prime. The image size of the Canon is, therefore, 4 times that of the Sigma. So, though the Sigma lens does have macro capability, don't expect 300mm magnification, nor anything like it, at close distances. That said, I'm very happy with it and would buy it again. It's my travel walkabout lens of choice.
I had pretty low expectations for this “do it all” lens. But I’ve been using it for a couple of months and this is what I use 95% of the time now on one of my two camera bodies. I shot several hundreds of images of airshows, wildlife, pets, and landscapes. Some vignetting is noticeable at longer ranges but it can be corrected with software. My camera (77D) does not have lens correction data like it does for my Sigma 17-50 but corrections can be made in Lightroom. I believe that using the included USB dock you will be able to download new Sigma software that tricks Canon camera into thinking it has a Canon lens attached and provide it with lens correction data, like 17-50 Sigma lens does.Basically this is a great replacement for a typical 17-55 / 50 – 250 kit lens ... MoreI had pretty low expectations for this “do it all” lens. Has much better built quality and will give you similar or better results. Super convenient to use as a walkaround lens when you are not sure what you are going to encounter.I plan to use this for daylight photography but switch to my trusty Sigma 17-50 f2.8 for low light situations. In terms of dimensions and weight, these lenses are pretty similar.Adorama adds a nice free accessory bundle consisting of a filter kit, cleaning kit, lens cap “leash” and a lens bag, so this is a very nice deal overall.
I bought this lens for an upcoming trip with the idea that I can leave my others at home. The other positive reviews you see are accurate. I can accept the compromise of 18-300mm. I don't like the exterior movement of auto focus feature- although it is a fine reminder that the constant focusing is burning your battery . That is correct. I do like the short focus movement. If you use the hood you cannot adjust a CP filter. I've had some difficulty getting it to focus on the right target as I approach the 300mm mark. That's probably me not the lense. Close ups are good -especially in manuel mode. There are certainly better lenses out there but for the price and the wide range it covers this is all most of us need. Canon 70D
The lens came nicely packaged. The Filters package is nice to have as a bundle. The Sigma Canon Mount lens was used with the Sigma MC-11 converter for a Sony E- Mount. The lens stabilization worked well. Focussing with this combination takes roughly 2 seconds for the focus to catch on accurately on using a Sony a6300 in late morning light. The Pre-AF function (in the menu) causes the lens to hunt for the focus a lot more than normal and sometimes tends not to capture the right focus when the shutter is released. Turning this function off provides a more stable focussing platform. The zoom functions well. There is some slight zoom creep when the lens is in a vertical or downward position. I got the Sigma 18-300mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM lens in July of 2018 in an offer that included a lens hood and a Dock. We already have an 18-200 but my wife has made her own claim on that one. I like that lens a lot but don't want two of them, so I got the 18-300 because it has just a little more reach. I've been using it on my Canon 77D and in the first two days had taken over 1,000 pictures with it. I was experimenting with settings and taking pictures of the back pasture and the yard and my wife and flowers and insects and pets and coins and knick-knacks and pretty much anything I happened to walk past... just to see what the lens can do. This is going to be a lens that we can take on a hike or to a family cookout and still get pics of the kids playing in the yard while I sit on the porch and drink tea. I very much like this lens. This lens is yet another quality product from Sigma's Global range. Body: The build quality is amazing. Although it is a plastic lens it still has quite a robust, solid feel without being too heavy [all the weight comes from the beautiful glass inside]. The rubberized zoom ring does have a too firm a stiffness when zooming but I think this will improve with use. The manual focus ring is smooth, albeit a little short [quarter turn encompasses the whole focus range]. The barrel locking switch is very precise and 'clicks' nicely into position but unfortunately only locks in the 18mm position. The Auto / Manual Focus switch is just as precise and is easy to reach. The lens hood, albeit a little small, fits nicely on the 72mm lens and the provided rear and front lens caps fit well. In Use: As I am using a 1.6x crop sensor the first thing to realize is the zoom range coverts. The zoom range goes from 18 - 300mm to a 28 - 480mm. This is not as wide angle as I would have liked but then I do gain in the zoom length. The aperture range isn't too bad [f3.5 - f6.3] as long as your subject is well lit [sunny day etc.]. This should not be too much of an issue but you will have to sacrifice a little depth of field. Depending on the subject you can still get some nice bokeh or background blur, but don't expect anything like a full frame f2.8 would give you. The sharpness of the lens is very good and the auto focus is very quick although sometimes I did have some problems with front and back focusing [missing focus of the subject - in front or behind]. I have yet to use the focusing micro adjustment in camera to see if I can rectify this somewhat but it's not consistently happening, which leads me to believe it is camera related rather than the lens itself. Picture quality is great as long as you are manually setting your camera correctly for your subject. Due to the aperture range this is not recommended for an "Auto" point and shoot photographer. You will need to know what your camera can do to really reap the benefits from this versatile lens. Having said that, if you have a beautiful sunny day and your subject has little or no motion you can get some great results in "Auto" mode. Low light is not fantastic but that also depends on the camera you're using and how well it copes with higher ISO's. Conclusion: For an all-around 'Travel' type lens this would be an excellent choice but as mentioned previously there will be times when it may not suffice. All in all I am very happy with this versatile lens and it has now become the latest member of my growing Sigma lens range I use constantly and I'm consistently impressed by the quality results I get. I am very impressed with Sigma's new direction and I hope they continue to improve and reinvigorate the quality that is now world class. Great job!
