Amazing lens at a great value. The lens is very hefty and well build. With A7R III or A7 III the lens and camera together weights over 4lb. Continues AF (AF-C) and Eye AF work beautifully, both in stills and video. In Single Shot AF (AF-S) focus tends to hunt a bit more compared to some of Sony's native camera offerings. The image is just as sharp as other Art offerings from Sigma, and bokeh is soft and creamy.

its big. like really really big. like bigger than big. please consider the DG DN instead. images are Immaculate. focus ring is godly. it gets a lot of attention at events if thats what youre going for. people like to make comments about my "electron microscope" still my number one lens for portraits. just unbeatable.

I bought this on the basis of several 5star reviews and have been seriously disappointed by the poor focus in over a hundred studio portrait images. I had previously used the "Canon EF 100mm f2.8 Macro USM" lens for portraiture and it gave pin sharp images so that even in full length portraits, the veins in the eyes were in focus when viewed close up in Lightroom. I love Sigma lenses and this is a dream for portrait work. So bright and so rugged. It is a dream lens. Particularly wanted for the wide aperture after persevering with mid range zooms. The is almost zero chromatic aberration which cannot be said for zooms. Feels like a battleship compared to Canon lens - really well built. Delighted with it.
This lens has an amazing depth of field. At 1.4, you have to be very careful. If you or the subject move just an inch, your focus will be off. When you get it right, the images are amazingly sharp with an extremely shallow depth of field. At higher apertures, the sharpness is outstanding.
Excellent prime lens, good AF do hunt a little bit but excellent for portrait. IQ is superior and very sharp across the frame. Cant be happier with the quality and the output. Eye focus work very well with a7iii only with photo shooting, I have not try it with video so no comment about the video AF. For a professional portrait and wedding photographer, this is a cheap option to capture professional IQ for your clients. My clients are definitely happy with the photos, so I highly recommend this to you. I bought this lens from DOxpert

Since a crop sensor hits the sweet spot of a lens, the Canon 85mm f/1.8 shines. The Sigma 85mm F/1.4 DG HSM lens is a great lens. Noted for its sharpness, it does not disappoint. Used with Sonys Eye AF, portrait photographers will get the highly sought after sharp eye! Sigma has come out with a newer model, the DG DN, that is smaller, but the DG HSM older model is very manageable. Highly recommend for the $$.
This particular Sigma Art lens in for Sony mirrorless cameras in the Alpha series. If you know these cameras, you are aware that they are small, lightweight, and versatile. This lens is a monster. I had read reviews describing this 85mm f/1.4 as "big and heavy," but I had no idea it would literally dwarf my little Sony AR7. I mean, seriously, looking at the lens and camera straight on, you literally almost can't tell there's a camera behind that behemoth of a lens. I own several canon L lenses but this sigma version locks on faster than canon's own f1.2. Got fed up with all the hunting and out of focus shots with the canon that it had to go. I love 85 mm as a focal length, so thought I would take a punt on the sigma. Not only does it look better mounted, it also comes with a proper lens hood and is easier to attach to a camera body. The canon is quite fat in comparison and a small point I know, but it wasn't the easiest to attach to my 5D. Very impressed with initial test shots, accurate focus and lovely bokeh. Is even excellent at f1.4 and sharpens up as you step down. As the price of original brand continues to rocket I will definitely consider sigma for future purchases.
