Nice compass, very good for orienteering, trekking. I like the clear base, for easy map setup, the needle and base can be seen in the dark, and the mirror for lining-up the way point/target. Good size, snap down cover. Nice lanyard with a scale on it.

We wanted a compass as a safety net if our GPS runs out of battery or decides to pack it in. We wanted something robust, accurate and waterproof. This compass fits the bill perfectly. Highly recommended

As a retired forester of a 45 year career, I have always the Ranger a found it very reliable and pragmatic. I like the declination adjustment feature as I traveled to many isogonic areas. I have several that have metal lids. The lanyards are very sturdy and the only issues I have experienced are a large bubble in the needle compartment and some flaws in the mirror. But these are after 10+ years of use and many immersions in hat-floater Swamps and large creeks. All in all a fantastic outdoorsman tool!

All the useful and necessary features and well made.The Ranger compass is not fluid filled, which I consider a bonus. Every fluid-filled compass I've owned (~4-5 of 'em) has eventually developed an air bubble which throws off the needle and makes the compass useless. If you can handle an undamped needle, this is the compass for you.
This is a new model replacing the former Polaris model in the last couple of years. The addition of the distance measuring lanyard in 4 different topo map scales is the most noticeable and practical new feature, which makes determining longer distances on a map a really handy tool. The luminous pointers for night use & base plate magnifier are also new additions, but probably of limited utility and help to increase the price. I also like the slightly longer base plate for determining bearings over longer distances on a topo map. Overall, I would give the new Ranger a thumbs up!
The needle has only a very thin stripe of luminescent paint, but it's too thin to be visible in the dark. I had to repeatedly shine a flashlight on it to get even the faintest glow. Not so effective for getting bearings at night. Useless actually. Lanyard quick release is a bit loose as well. Came off a couple times when it shouldn't have, would have lost the compass if it hadn't been underneath my jacket.
This compass fits well in my hand, offers accurate readings, and is clear to read. The extra lines on the base & bezel make it easy to align with the map. The bezel itself has the perfect level of resistance for me. And I have already utilized the markings on the lanyard. I haven’t been able to test its illumination capability or long-term durability, but am trusting both will prove true.
Item is packaged badly with the compass face uncovered. Mine arrived already scratched up.Comes with a "Detachable safety-release scale lanyard" which is actually an awful thing to be taking out in the wilderness. I had mine around my neck and under my shirt and lost it on the first outing. Somewhere along the trail, the "safety" lanyard detached and the compass slipped out from under my shirt without me noticing.Although the compass is adequate, I give this a fail. If anyone intends to use this product with a lanyard, don't use the one supplied with the product.
Value for money robust compass, which has so far preformed well. The lanyard does not include common Australian topo map scales unfortunately. Easy to read during the day, and can handle 4wd vehicle transport. I recommend this compass for navigation purposes, and general use.
This is a simple compass, and very well made (I've used Silva compasses all my life). There is a lot of attention to detail in this simple tool that is missing from the cheapo "ebay knock-offs". Things like mapscale marking on the lanyard for example.Can't go wrong with this one.
