A capable and useful lens

I'm using this lens on an a6300. I would have to categorize this lens as sharp enough and good enough. I am happy with the photos I make with it while understanding that I am trading off some optical quality for the convenience of fewer lens changes. I think some have rated the focusing action as slow, however, considering the great range this focus must rack through it is once again, good enough in my opinion. The focus ring is smooth and manual focus is a breeze with it. There is no dead band before the camera realizes you are trying to adjust focus. The zoom ring is very stiff. I can't tell if the ring is loosening up a bit with use or if my arm is getting stronger with the exercise. I don't really know what the lock is for at 18mm. Pretty useless unless you are pointing the camera straight down and want it to stay, for certain, at 18mm. I had one disturbing problem with the lens at first use. When I would hold focus on a subject the focus mechanism would vibrate alarmingly and squeal loudly. I was pretty sure the lens was going back to B&H as that was really alarming. I dismounted the lens and reattached it and the bad activity was somewhat reduced. Each cycling of the mount improved matters a bit. Now I'm thinking the contacts on the lens might be a problem. I took a dry cotton swab and burnished the contacts. The problem was then gone. Since then there is no hint of the problem.

This is a nice-looking, nice-performing, easy-to-carry companion for my a6000. This is not for protraiture or fine-detail work. This is for taking with you to the zoo, amusement park, dog park, vacation, etc. Depending on your model NEX/Alpha, it may not be good for low-light/indoors, as it drops quickly from its maximum f3.5 as you zoom. (I don't have that much issue with the a6000, a pretty decent low-light performer.) It is as good as or better than any of the newer superzoom APS-C and mirrorless lenses out there, such as the latest Sigma 18-200 |C or Lumix 14-140 II. It works well with the NEX/Aplha hybrid AF. It's quiet for video (Although, you may prefer the PZ version, if that is your main use.) And, with the built-in lens correction of the a6000, I do not see any CA, and only a little bit of distortion at the wide end and for close shots. The biggest con is the price. Similar lenses for Canon/Nikon from Sigma and Tamron are half the price! Even the Lumix equivilent is 100 cheaper. But, e-mount apparently demands a premium compared to other systems, as the Tamron version of this for e-mount is around the same price as the Sony. (and the Sony version is rumored to be a re-brand of the Tamron, which it certainly bears a striking resemblance to.) I do recommend it, despite it's high price tag, as it is really the best way to enjoy your e-mount camera in a sightseeing environment.

I rented this lens to pair with an FX30 and it got the job done. Images came out nicely and the stabilishot worked as promised, but the camera struggled to recognize the lens from time to time and required remounting on the fly for autofocus to work correctly. When recognized, the pairing of internal stabilization with the lens' stabilishot provides a tripod-like level of stability, which can get a little jerky if trying to go from no movement to a small pan or tilt. Overall, if you're looking for a good travel lens with good responsiveness and few chromatic issues, it'll work.

Good versatile all day lens
16 October 2021

A lightweight lens with a good focal range of 18 mm to 200 mm which is 24 mm to 300 mm full frame equivalent. It will enable you to capture most scenes. Sharp at the centre with a little fall off at the edges. In many cases this will not matter, if your main subject is in focus the edges and background don't always need to be. Use it with a wider aperture, the out of focus background with a pleasant bokeh can make your main subject stand out. If you want a flexible light lens for use on any of the excellent Sony APSC cameras that you can use all day this is good value for money.

Great addition to camera capabilities
16 June 2020

Quality product, easy to use, good sharp pictures. Be advised: it is bigger than the camera and on the heavy side, and seems a bit slow to focus. Because of which it is a bit slower to handle than I would recommend for action shots. I don't use it for action shots, so it is a moot point for me, but it might be important for some others. It could be my personal experience and different for others. Other than this caveat it is a high quality lens and I highly recommend it. There is a variant on this model, the LE version, which is a bit lighter.

Great overall travel Lens
15 December 2018

Brought this along with my new A6500, replacing my A6000+SELP1650+SEL55210.If you're a hobbyist and travel frequently, you would know, how things get difficult when you have more gear with you. Thats where I decided i would go for a all in one lens such as the SEL18200LE.This one is way better than my previous setup. As I dont have to jump between lenses. Focus is sharp around the center. The overall performance is good but at higher focal lengths focusing becomes really difficult. And some times you also get a metallic whine while focusing at those focal lengths.Cant say that I would fully recommend this lens but sure if a future update solves this issue then why not.

I love them
15 August 2024

A lot of places scam you these days, they are dishonest, cheap, you never know what you're going to get . I both rented and purchased from this place. My rental was awesome. Packaged amazingly. Product was great-- and the service great, because I didn't love the lens. Then I purchased a lens (that they recommended (because I didn't love the Tamron), and I love it. Was in really excellent shape at a fraction of the cost. This place has good people, uniquely.

Terriffic travel/all around lens with one caveat
20 February 2020

Love the lens, performs great for the massive zoom range. The size and range from wide to telephoto make for an amazing travel lens.Only complaint is a defect in the OSS that causes audible and visible vibrations within the lens. Defect only occurs sometimes when OSS is forced to be active for long periods (long shutters of more than 2-3 seconds or holding focus by half pressing shutter for more than 2-3 seconds). When defect occurs, power on and off usually resolves it. Defect is also avoided by disabling OSS.

The Sony 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens SEL18200 for NEX Camera is a can-do lens--an 11x optical zoom 27-300mm (35mm equivalent) lens that can handle everything from wide landscape photos to portraits to sports, action and even wildlife photography with the telephoto up to 300mm.And the results will be brilliant, with four aspherical elements which reduce aberrations across the entire zoom range, a quiet AF motor for improved sound recording with video, and optical Steady Shot image stabilization (with Active mode) for steadier handheld shots while on the move. A circular aperture provides more pleasing out-of-focus areas. Because aperture blades form a near circle at the wide openings used for low-light shots, spot-light sources have a pleasing circular defocused effect. This lens is not recommended for use with full-frame DSLRs.
