This lens is truly different and a great complement to the other two G-master telephoto lenses (85 GM and 135 GM). It takes a bit of effort to learn how to best use its unique apodization filter and the impact it has on light transmission, but once you do the results are incredible. Added bonus: the short minimal focus distance which turns this lens into a useful close focus lens. Great lens!

The image quality is world class. Needs a bit of light to get the best results, but, any well lit scene works brilliantly. If you are concerned about needed to use higher ISO with this lens, try out DxO Photolab 4 and Deep PRIME noise reduction. sorts out noise and keeps details. This is a great portrait lens, but, the very fast focus also makes is a great car photography lens. It is like having a built in ND filter letting you get slower shutter speeds for those motion blur shots while still having the aperture open and that signature STF soft bokeh.

I shoot both Sony a9's and Nikon D's. I wanted to see how this compares to my Nikon 105 1.4. Of course at 5.6 the bokeh is about the same. Maybe a bit smoother in the Sony and the edges softer. I then shot the same shot with my 105 at 2.2, 1.8, then 1.4 and the separation and blur was not even in the same playing field. Maybe a GMaster 85 1.4 is a better comparison. I know this lens gives great round bokeh balls but for what it cost and the limitation of 5.6 vs a complete blowout bokeh at 1.4 I had to return it. If you don't own the 105 1.4 noikon I highly recommend it. If you are only a Sony shooter this lens has its place in a camera bag for sure but since I have the best of both worlds I have to stick with Nikon. I picked up this lens to use for product photography on models, and it's perfect. You can be taking amazing portraits and with a quick flip of the macro ring you can get nice and up close to your subject. It's good for what i am using it for ( Jewelry), but definitely need studio lighting or full day lighting conditions. I don't feel the image stabilization on the lens really help much wish i was brighter, maybe if the STF was half the strength it is now it would make with lens really something amazing.
Spring is here and I was looking for a lens to do (pseudo) macro flower photography. (Dislike insects, so not interested in real 1:1 macro photography anyway). I was debating between Sony 90mm and this 100mm. Wanted the STF bokeh, but worried about the loss of light (i.e., you get f2.8 bokeh, but really light transmission is only at f5.6).Having seen the samples of 90mm, decided that it may be too sharp for portrait, and since I already have an 85mm/1.8, the 90mm may be too close in focal length to be useful.Read around even more and saw a comment from somewhere that you could add a diopter lens (+2, like the Canon 500D close up lens) to improve the magnification from 1:4 to 1:2.Did exactly that, bought the 100mm STF and the Canon 500D close-up lens to try. ... MoreSpring is here and I was looking for a lens to do (pseudo) macro flower photography. (Thanks to B&H for the great return policy). Took both the lens out for spring flower photo-walk... No looking back! I just loved the photos! Now the 100/2.8 STF alone is Fantastic for portrait! But the 100/2.8 STF paired with a Canon 500D (+2) close up lens is just GREAT for macro (if you are shooting flowers)!!
I like the 100mm/105mm focal length, personally I prefer it to 85mm.This lens is wonderful in every respect except the f/5.6 widest aperture can be limiting. If using natural light and it’s cloudy you have to plan ahead a bit and if it’s plain dull you have to decide whether to use the lens with higher ISO or take something faster.Apart from this the lens is a real pleasure to use. It’s a pretty expensive lens but with patience it’s possible to get it at a good deal.
I checked this lens out extensively via watching its usage in some 3hours of Youtube demos and reviews. It is exactly as advertised. Tack sharp, gives coherent background blur separation while maintaining the features of background and foreground that provide the in-focus subject a coherent visual context. This lens allows the photographer to tell a story, such as This and That, This not That, etc. other low aperture lens cant do that because bokeh-mania and spherical aberration take possession of fore and background composition. This lens sculpts light and maintains its coherence corner to corner. I think many photographers have lost sight of such story telling opportunities.
I didn't want this lens. I didn't need this lens. I figured it would be a bit redundant with my (much loved!) 85/1.4 GM. Then I happened to try one for a few minutes at a demo. Game over. This is a wonderful lens; really fun to shoot with! (And, for once, the results right off the card look a lot like the brochure and review shots.... :) ) It's a cheap shot to say I wish it were 20% cheaper and a stop or two faster. The fact is, Sony did a great job with this product, and it is well-worth every penny when you want to subtly isolate a subject from its surroundings. Definitely try one if you can. But, you have been warned...
I have come to use the 100mm STF as the only long lens I carry alongside a wide angle when travelling. It works as a regular long lens but offers better creative possibilities. I was previously using the 90mm but it doesn't provide as nice bokeh as this one. The T5.6 aperture turned out not to be a limitation at all. There's been a dearth of in-depth reviews on this lens but it's not as specialist as you first think. Compared to the previous STF Sony lens or other similar lenses, the apodization effect is stronger and in use you realize that it is the right choice. I am still as keen on it now as I was before I bought it.
It's not just a lens to buy unless you find a need for this style. I find my 70-200 f/2.8 give you a easier bokeh when you can zoom in a little. I switch to Sony a few year back now and was in love with my Canon 135 f/2 lens for Portraits / Head Shots. After coming over I was looking for a nice sharp lens for doing the same. At f/8 this lens is very sharp. It has an extra settable button on the lens for a custom setting. I set it to use the Eye Auto Focus. You need to set the Aperture manually with the ring on the rear part of the lens. I put a little gaffers tape on this ring as I find it's easy to move by accident. All in All, a nice sharp lens.
