Sony FE 600mm F4 gm OSS Lens
The premium lens with the strongest telephoto range among all Sony lenses is the lightest in its class worldwide and features a powerful autofocus, high resolution, and beautiful bokeh. It is ideal for sports, news, and wildlife photography. Weighing only about 3,040 grams, it is currently the lightest in its class. Two XD linear motors (extreme dynamics) make the autofocus faster, more precise, and quieter. It is compatible with 1.4x and 2.0x E-Mount teleconverters. The optical image stabilizer OSS is particularly helpful for dynamic sports shots, ensuring sharp images. Three different setting options make working with the lens even easier. Additionally, there are four focus hold buttons that can be individually programmed.

So expensive, but is it? The images, paired with the Sony A1 are simply the best I've ever seen. I've been through them all - Nikon & Canon Pro gear, enough to buy a small house, and this set-up blows them all away. Use it wide open at f4 and images are beautifully clean, sharp and the bokeh is superb. I cannot use anything else now. Highly recommended for wildlife and in my case, birds in flight, which I've been doing since the late 1990s.

I recently purchased the Sony FE 600mm f/4 and I am delighted! The minimal weight of this lens was very surprising as I had lugged my Nikon 600 for years (I am now 77 years young) and needed less weight. Then, to pick up this lens, it almost hit the ceiling since I was expecting the typical heavyweight. The build quality is freakingly good. I was photographing birds during a very misty day that turned to snow. A little soft towel and all was well again just as I had anticipated for a quality Sony lens. Another surprise was the storage and transport case. In the past, I seemed to get the shipping container from hell (not how it left B&H). The Sony lens case held up to almost any abuse. I cannot say enough good things about the ability to handhold this lens while ... MoreI recently purchased the Sony FE 600mm f/4 and I am delighted! The minimal weight of this lens was very surprising as I had lugged my Nikon 600 for years (I am now 77 years young) and needed less weight. I waited for three months for this lens. The B&H representatives told me to be patient and continue to wait for this gem. They were right on the money.

As a passionate wildlife/bird photographer for over 40 years I can honestly say that I never thought I'd get to own the BEST 600mm lens ever made. As a budget bird photographer I took up digiscoping to get the focal lengths generated by the big primes and assumed that my journey would end there. But, my DW gave me permission to buy the lens when it became available (thank you, B&H!), and it is everything and more. I thought the 200-600mm lens was sharp, but this thing is crazy sharp! And hand-holdable! Autofocus is fast, but I will say that it tends to lag on up close subjects (15'), but it is every bit as fast as my old 300/2.8 Nikkor. Image resolution is outstanding, and coupled w/ the Sony a1 it is the ultimate package for birds and wildlife. Absolutely love this lens. Although a bit heavier than the 200-600 I have been using, it is well worth it. I can hand carry it for quite a while (I am a very active senior female). Owning a 600mm prime has been on my bucket list for many years. When B&H notified me that it was in stock, I jumped on it. Glad that I did because they immediately sold out. It is great in low light. With the 200-600, I had to crank up the ISO in low light. Plus, it locks on to bif so much faster. If you are considering it, I say go for it!!!
This is the first of the high end telephoto lenses I've owned. It is surprising to me how sharp and light it is. In particular, the sharpness is visibly, although subtly greater than my 200-600. It's also noticeably longer (actual 600 vs. the estimated 560 of the 200-600). I also find it reasonbly easy to handhold for short periods of time. Finally, there are several features on the lens (such as preset focal length and DMF) that are handy to have on board.
I'm one of those guys who obsess (endlessly) on technology and the best possible tool available for my needs. I shoot wildlife and have been a Nikon guy until recently. I've been following Sony's push into Nikon/Canon space for a few years now, watching as they leave them both in the dust when it comes to mirrorless camera tech (IBIS, auto AF, Eye AF, etc). Well now it's definitely leaving them both far behind once again with this lens. I'm very aware that both Canon and Nikon make excellent big glass options but nothing either of them make compares to this. It sits in a class of its own and hits the scene immediately becoming the gold standard for everything else to be compared against. It sits in a class of its own and hits the scene immediately becoming the gold standard for everything else to be compared against. The sharpness corner to corner is astonishing (I'd hope so at this price point!) and the bokeh is creamy and perfect. But the real engineering feat is the overall weight and how that weight is distributed. I've been happily walking around hand holding this lens, getting keeper after keeper without any discomfort. Sure, it's not light but it's lighter than every 600mm F/4 lens on the market, including the Nikon 500mm f/4. Think about that. And I don't even flip the lens IS on until I'm shooting at 1/500 or below. Sony has definitely declared their very serious intentions with this lens and created something truly special. If you're looking at a reboot (perhaps moving into mirrorless?) or looking at jumping into big glass for the first time, you will not be disappointed with this choice.
I'm a stills photographer. In that department, this lens is a MASSIVE upgrade from the fairly fantastic 200-600 G. So far, I've been able to capture some shots I wasn't previously able to capture, and the performance has been stellar. Sharpness is unmatched, AF speed is phenomenal, rendering is gorgeous. I highly recommend it for this work.My only gripes are:1) No arca-swiss dovetail cuts on the tripod foot given the five figure price tag, and2) When I decide to pop a quick video in any shooting mode, the OSS just doesn't perform like the 200-600 does. Even in Mode 1, the lens shows the most minute of camera shake, even on a monopod compared to the 200-600 hand-held. When you see a lens priced so high as this one, you have to wonder if any lens can be worth that much money. And I did wonder-especially because I had already upgraded to the Sony 200-600mm, which is sharper than the Olympus 300mm that I had been very happy with for years. (I upgraded primarily because of the camera, not the lens.) Eventually I decided to take the plunge. Money doesn't grow on trees around here, so I sold the Miata to almost cover the cost of the lens. Was it worth the trade? You betcha. When I compare shots of soccer players taken with the 200-600 against shots of the same players taken with the 600mm under the same lighting (though different days), there is no question that the 600mm is a much better lens. There is a presence to the image that amounts to much more than the sum of better sharpness, plus better color, plus better bokeh. This lens is a thing of beauty. And isn't that why we take pictures in the first place?
Nobody who spends the amount of money this lens costs, not even a curmudgeon reviewer like myself (well, there may be that odd one or two folks who gives it four stars), will give it less than 5 stars. Yes, there's a few downsides to be aware of:- It's heavy (but still hand-holdable for short periods)- No arca-swiss mount on the lens foot (get either the kirk or rrs lens foot)- The min-focusing distance is 15 feet out :-(For those who want the ultimate long tele for their Sony cameras, it's either this or the Sony 400/2.8. Positives:- Sharp- Bright- Fast- Bokehlicous- Happily takes 1.4 and 2.0 teleconverters (slight degradation with the 2x)- Balance is towards the camera body making it easier to handhold and panCompared to the Sony 200-600:- ... MoreNobody who spends the amount of money this lens costs, not even a curmudgeon reviewer like myself (well, there may be that odd one or two folks who gives it four stars), will give it less than 5 stars. We received the 600 4.0 just before last year's (2022's) spring trip to Yellowstone Park. On previous trips we shot the 200-600, a terrific lens, and the 400 2.8, an even better lens. The 600 4.0 is the best of the bunch. Coupled with the A1, the results the 600 prime produces can be outstanding. Practically all of the misses can be chalked up to operator error. The autofocus is almost instantaneous. It stays locked on to moving subjects (of course, shutter speed has to be fast enough). The images are tack sharp even when closely cropped. Even a 65-year-old guy (like me) can hand-hold this lens for long periods of time. The only drawback is that prime lenses aren't cheap. This one is no exception. Whether it's worth $11,000 more than the 200-600 depends on a person's perspective and finances. If you are person who is always looking for ways to improve your photography there isn't much doubt that this lens will accomplish that. If I had to, I could go back to the 200-600...but I might cry a lot in the process.
