This compact, lightweight telephoto zoom lens is ideal for full-frame E-mount bodies, delivering superb G Lens image quality throughout the zoom range. AA (advanced aspherical) elements, Super ED and ED glass elements, the Sony Nano AR Coating, and a 9-blade circular aperture add up to refined rendering with smooth bokeh where desired. Maximum aperture is a constant F4, and the physical length of the lens does not change when zooming or focusing. Dual linear motors ensure fast, precise focusing. Focus hold, range limiter and other controls are located on the barrel for easy access. Optical SteadyShot image stabilization is built in. For optical quality, the lens features numerous specialized elements, including Super ED and Advanced aspherical elements. These elements reduce the impact of aberrations and distortion for high resolution imaging. The lens is also benefited by the use of Nano AR coatings that reduce the effects of flaring. It even has dust- and moisture-resistant construction for use in less than ideal weather conditions.

A beautiful versatile lens

I have the existing Sony 70-200 F4 G lens that I love for landscape photography. I decided to buy the version 2 lens for the macro capability, the fact that it is compatible with the teleconvertors and for the fast autofocus with the linear focus motors. When used with my Sony A7RV with insect subjectcdetect I capture beautiful macro shots. With the teleconvertor or punch in 1.5 crop I get some nice birds in flight photos with good reach with this very light lens. The shorter length when packed away means I can leave it attached to my camera and it still fits in my messenger bag for compact light carry. It really is like having three lenses in one. I really love this versatile lens & the shots render beautifully straight out of camera & I don’t feel like they need ... MoreI have the existing Sony 70-200 F4 G lens that I love for landscape photography. This has been THE best telephoto lens I've ever travelled with. With a couple medical issues in my hands, and additionally being a parent, I'm not always able to comfortably carry around a large setup, and this lens feels wonderfully weighted on my cameras (a7rv and a7rii) and was comfortably carried for days without issue.I absolutely love this lens, and it has effectively replaced my 70-200 f2.8. If I really need more light, then I use a prime like the 135 f1.8, which you can afford since this is so much cheaper than the 2.8.5/5 stars, absolutely brilliant lens. If you've ever wanted to have your telephoto, but not want to lug it around, this is the lens for you.

Excellent All Arounder for the A7IV, especially in video
28 November 2022

I rented this lens for a weeks to test shooting football highlights and it did not disappoint. Also took the opportunity to shoot a few events and it was a great lens. Don’t expect G Master sharpness but it’s no slouch. I will likely buy this lens for video in the near future as its light weight and small form factor make it perfect for run and gun. My only complaint with Lens Rentals is the absurdity of their keeper price. Right now the lens is on sale for $1299 brand new. After spending $300 on rentals they offer me the lens at the same price I can get it new. I would have considered a keeper if the price truly reflected my rental plus actual used value. In like new condition this lens in barely $1000. I digress, other than that I absolutely love Lens Rentals.

Important Addition to E mount Lens Range

Compared to the previous 70-200 f4, this lens is sharper, lighter and faster focusing.More importantly the macro design of this lens reduces min focus distances, enabling close up shoots, that the old lens could not. When used with the 1.4 x and 2 x tele-converters image quality does not decrease to any degree I can notice in post.Making this lens with the 2.0 x tele suitable for short range bird in flight photography. The biggest benefit of this lens is having a short min focus distance macro lens that works with the Focus Bracketing function of the A7R V. And the Tamron 180 mm macro, Minolta 200 mm macro A mount lens I have previously used with the LAEA 5 for single shot macro. Overall a big improvement on the previous version of this lens, but more importantly adding macro at focal lengths not previously available in E mount. Plus the ability to macro Focus Bracket with the A7R V.

Love It !!
13 December 2023

Hello. Love this lens so far. I haven't had an opportunity to take it hiking just yet, but I did shoot a few semi-macro and architectural shots. Very sharp, great color, easy to use, not too heavy. It seems to pair well with my A7RIVA camera. I thought long-and-hard about purchasing the 70-200 GM f2.8 II, but just couldn't justify the cost. This f4 lens will be fine for travel and hiking photography. And, I like the almost-macro feature, as I mainly shoot macro when we're not traveling. Not having f/2.8 doesn't seem to be a big deal, although I'm not into shooting portraits.

How many 70-200mm zoom lenses can accept a 1.4 or 2.0 teleconverter and do it well? Maybe, but if you know the walk is long and you have plenty of light I would definitely considering carrying it and the 2.0 teleconverter.I bought this lens for the wife, she uses an A7Riv. I 'played' with this lens on a Sony A7C, an A7iv and the A1. I can only give it 5 stars but would give it 6 if possible. Now image quality. With the 2.0 on and shooting in crop mode it does not present as well as the 100-400 or 200-600. Of course there is no comparison with the 600/4 but your back, knees and wallet will love it IF you have the light for F8. The fact that this Sony lens can take either TC well tells you up front the lens alone is sharp sharp sharp.Images attached to give an idea of what can be done. For those scheming a travel system imagine having the Sony 20-70F4, the 70-200 II, and the 200-600mm. Pack a 1.4 or a 2.0 and you even have macro covered.Kinda hate to hand it over to the wife, she's already claimed my 200-600 haha!

Sony lenses get better and better.

I am very impressed with the images from this lens. Sharpness and clarity is really good at all focal lengths on my 61 Megapixel Sony A7RIV. I love the full-time manual override which works even in continuous focusing mode. Focusing manually using the viewfinder is very easy with the lens's linear-focusing system. One unexpected, and unusual, bonus, is that the lens does not change magnification at all when changing the focus distance (it does not 'breathe'). This is true at all focal lengths too. I think this would be welcomed by videographers - I think lenses for cinemaphotography are built that way and rather expensive.

The benefits of having such a compact lens outweigh the internal zoom. By the way, I love that Sony has included a lock switch on the lens which does not allow the barrel to extend. Great job Sony!It comes with a tripod foot that is easily removable. My only gripe is that the foot is not arca Swiss compatible just like the 200mm-600mm. In my case, I have an arca Swiss L-bracket attached to my camera body thus not having to use the tripod foot.Great lens for travel and hiking. I have the 200-600mm which I love however, it is heavy and I will definitely be taking the 70-200 with me instead whenever I shoot landscape or go hiking or birding especially that this lens will utilize the 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters with no degradation in image quality. Not to mention, the macro capabilities of this lens are truly amazing at 0.5x and it can achieve a 1:1 macro capability with the 2.0x teleconverter. Having the 2.0x teleconverter attached extends the focal range of this lens to 140mm-400mm.Having OSS and the ability to have on-demand manual focus on this lens is outstanding when shooting macro.Such a versatile lens, whether you're shooting portraits, landscape, wildlife, sports photography....it does it all extremely well. There may be certain folks that turn up their noses because this lens is a 4.0 instead of a 2.8. In this era of high performing cameras that handle low light extremely well, having a lens that is lighter and less costly yet performs as well as the 2.8 GM is a no brainer. The images coming out of this lens paired with my Sony A7IV are nothing short of spectacular. If you're a Sony shooter and in the market for a 70-200mm, I would give this lens serious consideration. With that said...I highly recommend that you buy your equipment from B&H. Their customer service is truly exceptional. I've always had a positive experience.Attached are some sample images.

Wow!

Really impressed with this lens. 3 custom buttons, which can only be assigned to 1 menu item, af/mf switch, dmf switch, focus limiter switch, OSS switch, OSS 3 setting switch, macro capability of .5 at all focal lengths. The only thing I wished the Sony had was an aperture ring, painted it black, and an arca groove on tripod foot. The Sony is actually about a half ounce lighter than the Tamron 70-180mm f2.8 that has none of these things plus a much wonkier macro capability. Of course the Tamron is f2.8 so that explains the weight difference. Other than f2.8 the Tamron has nothing on this lens relative to image quality and the Sony is in particular so much easier to use for macro. Other than f2.8 the Tamron has nothing on this lens relative to image quality and the Sony is in particular so much easier to use for macro. I have found the image quality on this lens to be superb, birds in flight at f8/f11, static subjects at f4 at any focal length, this is one heck of a lens from Sony and it’s lightweight and eminently hand holdable and packable. I know it costs a third more than the Tamron but when you consider what you are getting, including 20mm more reach, this lens is a no brainer over the Tamron. The reason I’m comparing this to the Tamron is because I owned it before replacing it with this. And, don’t get me wrong, the Tamron is a very sharp lens that will do better in low light than the Sony but, overall, I am enjoying this Sony lens so much more than the Tamron. And, of course, if money is no object, get the new Sony GM 70-200mm f2.8 II. Sony is killing it with these ”update” lenses and, yeh, expensive but SO GOOD!! Highly recommended!
