The price is reasonable comparing to its older brother Sony FE24-105mmF/4 G OSS.The negative of this lens is F/4. It can be an issue for most people when facing low light situation, but you can use a flash light for such situation. You can pair it with a Sony FE 20mm F/1.8 G or Sony FE35mm F/1.8. They can be great companion when you needed for low light.Bottom line, this is a one-lens solution for Hybrid Shooter that gives great range for both still and video subjects on any given day. My primary issue has been I've often wished it had a little wider focal length, particularly when travelling. So much so that when I crop a 70mm image on the new lens to equal 100-105mm of the old lens, the detail is indistinguishable between the two, with the 70mm crop often still having more detail. I was quite surprised to see this but thought I should mention it for those having the same concerns I had when considering the 20-70. It's certainly lighter than the 24-105, handling quite easily, and is not front heavy at all when mounted on camera. I think the main area where the 24-105 outperforms the 20-70 mis when trying to compress backgrounds if taking portraits. I'm not a portrait guy but have found some of this can be offset with the 20-70 by adding distance between the subject and background. The bokeh is actually quite nice. Not cinematic like a true portrait lens, but certainly good enough that I'd not shy away from taking portraits if this is what I had available to use. There is quite allot of barrel distortion and vignetting, particularly at 20mm and f/4. At 70mm there is a slight pin cushion but no vignetting. Lightroom does not yet have a lens profile for this lens, but using the 24-240 seems to eliminate the majority of the distortion at 20mm and all the pin cushion at 70mm. To eliminate all of the distortion at 20mm, the 28mm f/2 ultra profile seems to work best. So, in conclusion I'm very impressed and pleased with the 20-70mm f/4. It renders beautiful images, sharp (even at f/4) with terrific contrast and color, while allowing a lightweight and easy to handle kit. It will definitely be my primary travel, landscape and general-purpose lens.

I know a lot of people are getting this for its video features, but I bought it strictly for stills photography. The power zoom vs traditional zoom doesn't bother me since the lens is instant and responsive. I bought it for its size, weight, and sharpness. It does not disappoint. I transitioned to mirrorless cameras for the size and weight savings, but good full-frame glass often negates that. Not so with this lens. It is sharp edge to edge, with a great coverage of focal lengths. Bonus is that it takes traditional filters. It is a quality, light, tiny wide angle lens you can carry anywhere, be it hiking for nature pics, street photography, or carrying as you travel. I can't see it ever leaving my bag.

I got this lens a week before Sony announced its PZ.I read how so many were tickIed by the newer Sony lens and went for it. Since then I've unloaded all the other ultra-wide-angle zooms. This lens is small, light and has consistently excellent images. I really like having this full zoom range - and 35mm is my definition of 'normal'. I personally don't miss f2.8 and definitely don't miss the weight or size of the others. It's the only one with an aperture ring too, which I like a lot. As a still photographer, I had a little trepidation about the power-zoom but honestly it's instantly responsive and fine.Sony made some intelligent choices in making the compromises for this lens, but no compromises were made optically. This suits me to a tee. Hope this helps.
This has been a terrific lens so far. It replaces my 24-105 f4, which I actually think is a terrific travel lens. Compared to the 24-105, the 20-70 is smaller, lighter, sharper, and also seems to resolve with greater contrast and color. These last 2 are minor differences, but measurable. Overall, I'm quite happy with it and plan to use it extensively. By the way, it's a terrific lens for both video and stills. When shooting RAW, there is quite allot of distortion at 20mm and only minor at 70mm. Lightroom doesn't have a lens profile yet, but I find the FE 24-240 profile to do a very respectable job so far. It's not lighting fast when used on the rocker but when rotating the zoom ring it's 95% as fast as a manual zoom ring would be.It's definitely not NBA broadcast speed but for most applications it's more than fast enough. Speed is also adjustable and can be made variable in the menu for slow movements that won't jar your recording.Big plus is that all zoom is internal so for gimbals or run and gun use it stays short and compact throughout the zoom range.Despite the weight it feels well built and solid. If you're looking for a 16-35 right now for Sony I'd say this is a better choice than the 2.8. It's sharp and crisp with surprisingly good separation and bokeh. And, so important for me - light and small. I can carry this around all day without feeling the weight and bulk of previous lenses, which includes the Sony 24-105 and the Sigma 24-70, f2.8, which is relatively heavy. I also really like the extra 4mm at the wide end. It really makes a difference -because I always felt that the 24mm was not quite enough- and this is perfect. Both are fully weather sealed.Compared with the Loxia 21 it does not create those ultra sharp 10-point aperture stars (which the Loxia does even at middle apertures) but it is fully weather sealed while the Loxia is only sealed at the mount. I still need to confirm what I've read, that this new lens is resistant to flare (as is the Loxia).Compared with the f2 Laowa 15 Zero-D, the Sony zoom is not fast enough for astro, and the direct manual focus of the Laowa for this is advantageous.So where does this fit in my kit? For a two lens travel and hiking kit I'll take the new Sony + my Tamron 70-180. I used to combine the 70-180 with my Batis 40. Both the Batis and the Sony are the same size and weight. When wildflowers are anticipated might still choose the Batis. When night photography is planned I'll substitute my current combination of the Loxia 21mm f2.8 and Laowa 15mm f2.I've added a 72mm set of K&F Concept Magnetic filters. I can easily swap filters and rotate the polarizer without removing the Sony lens hood since there is enough clearance to get a fingertip on the filter edge. No vignetting at 16mm with 1-2 of these thin filters.So I am pleased. I'd like to see Sony create a new f4 24-105 taking advantage of the technology in the 16-35 PZ to incorporate internal zooming and reduce weight and bulk.
As my title says it's a versatile lens with the power zoom .I shoot live music on small to very large stages. I have a a7siii on a SteadyCam rig and this lens . I purchased the zoom and on off corded switch. ( Don't know what it's called ) Put it on the Zacuto camera cage I use on the sled . It's nice to be able to change my field of view on the fly and the lens is so light . The rocker switch that plugs into the camera isn't good enough to do nice and controlled zooms so don't think that's gonna happen for ya . I found myself reaching up and using the zoom switch on the lens . That works a bit better.Most lenses are good enough to give a good enough quality image . It's not a "colored" lens the image seems a touch desaturated and that's ok . I can dial that in in post . The Sony 35mm G Master seems saturated with color compared with this lens . This is more on par with the Sony 20mm f/1.8 G . A lens I also use a lot for video. Another great light weight high performance lens .So for now I'm loving this lens !
You can find lots of reviews already, so just sharing my impressions and comparison with Tamron 20-40/2.8, which in some ways competing with this lens.Lens surprisingly feels bulkier than the pictures may suggest, the hood is pretty large because of the wide angle. I found the resolution to be very good in full focal range at the center, corners at wide angle are soft as you would expect. I think the lens is the best around 50mm, at that FL it's sharp across the frame. Contrast is also good, not much flare to notice. There is some lateral CA closer to the edges. There isn't much of a bokeh to talk about, but whatever there is it's not disturbing.Distortions and vignetting at 20mm are atrocious. Tamron in my experience is also focusing faster and more precisely at 20mm. Judging from pictures I've got both lenses are close optically, I would give an edge to the Sony at the corners and at 40mm. Sony also seems to be about 5% wider than Tamron even after applying corrections. Tamron looks less distorted at 20mm even after applying the best corrections I could master to Sony.Finally, an advice for those who want to use this lens with an adapter on Nikon bodies -- don't! I tested it with the latest Megadap and though everything works, including aperture ring, the focusing is flaky at 20mm -- it often refuses to focus in low contrast conditions and at infinity. In comparison Tamron has no problems at all. Also worth noting, Sony mounts on adapter easily, Tamron is very tight.
