Contrast is incredible...almost best viewed on HDR monitor. Sharpness is astounding...never counted so many eyelashes. Miraculously light and compact-this can't be understated, as this makes my A7rIIIa light and portable with amazing, no compromise, image quality. At the same time, I don't want to overstate the compactness because I would absolutely still buy this lens if it was a pound heavier for IQ alone.It's been a while since a lens made me this profoundly satisfied. Really scratches the itch!!!

This is a very discrete and small 35mm lens for my Sony a7CR. It is sharp and small and allows me to take photos without the fanfare of using my other larger lenses. This lens along with the Sony 24mm f/2.8 are perfect for travel and produce great photos even when cropped due to the large size of the sensor. I highly recommend this 35mm lens.

My go-to 35mm lens is a manual focus Zeiss Loxia f/2, but for a compact, lightweight, auto-focus alternative for travel and street photography, you can't beat the Sony Sonnar FE 35mm f/2.8 lens. As others have noted, there can be slight vignetting and/or distortion in some situations, but these are easily correctible with the available Adobe Lightroom profile. The Sony 35mm 2.8 build quality is quite good and very similar to the excellent Sony FE 55mm 1.8. It does a good job protecting the lens but... it adds quite a bit of depth to the lens so I don't use it. Btw, the hood fits fine with a 49mm filter on at the same time :)Without the hood, it doesn't stick out that far past the width of my a7riii's. The OP/TECH "shortie" neoprene case fits the camera and lens very well if you're looking to toss it into a backpack or carry-on.The bokeh is what you'd expect from a 2.8. The sharpness exceeded my expectations though! I put this 35mm on one a7riii and my G Master 35mm 1.4 on the other a7riii. I preferred the color of the 35 2.8 but the bokeh on the 35 1.4 is obviously KING so I will be keeping both, no surprise there. The 2.8 will be for videography, travel, street photography, etc. It's has a very specific use and it excels at that very well. I'm hooked!!
I recently upgraded from APSC and all the small compact APSC lenses - looking for something compact, I came across this 35mm Sonnar... aside from being compact it's a Zeiss and brings along all of that Zeiss character. Is it perfect, no. But perfect is overrated. I was looking for character, and I got it. Sharp, contrasty images that pop. This one is a keeper. I also considered the new Sony 40mm which is also compact but based on reviews I saw, it was just OK... not a bad word spoken of the 40mm but also nothing special. Where's the fun in that?

Some people love the 35mm focal length saying its the best of both worlds (wide and zoom). Im afraid I lean a little more glass half empty. Not quite wide enough for most landscapes I take, nor do I find it ideal for taking portraits. When small and inconspicuous is important, I throw on this lens, but otherwise its my G-Master or a faster prime.
