I was initially skeptical when I first tried out this soundbar. I have always been a receiver/speaker/speaker wire type of audio user. A soundbar, for me, was a downgrade from what I have always used for TV, movies and music. However, I don’t have a lot of space where I live to have a 5.1 or 7.1 speaker setup in my living room. I’ve tried other unnamed soundbars and was disappointed as they sounded like “speakers in a plastic box”. The Sony HT-S400 does not sound like this at all. The sound is clean and the transition between the lower frequencies of the subwoofer to the higher ranges with the soundbar is quite smooth. Does this replace a complete surround setup? Not necessarily, but if you are looking for a great stereo sound experience with clean bass, while saving a lot of room, then the HST-400 is for you. My speakers and receiver now sit in my closet, while I enjoy the compact and clean look and sound of this product. I couldn’t be happier with it. I would suggest that if you are looking for compact and simple to use audio setup, then please consider trying out this soundbar. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed, nor will your wallet. Bonus, I have a fairly recent model Sony 4k TV (55X90J) and this works wirelessly with zero audio lag (even with BT) and offers some direct device controls through the TV when connected via HDMI using ARC. Give it a try!

The Subwoofer I'm a little more mixed on. Compared to the soundbar the sub is physically hefty, and though it sounds fine and adds definite substance to the overall soundscape, but it never quite met my expectation -- I kept wanting to turn the bass up, to find it it was already at max. To be fair, your room and placement can have a surprisingly big impact on how the very same subwoofer sounds so you should take advantage of the freedom with which the wireless sub can be moved. In my case I just never found a placement that resulted in the performance I would expect from a sub of this size. For my intended use case of gaming/rec secondary setup it's fine, but I wouldn't recommend this as a primary soundbar unless you're just really constrained for space and budget. For an apartment this would be plenty, for an individual home where your audio is less likely to impact others it's slightly underwhelming. In terms of raw volume it can get plenty loud for either case, it's just the bass that I found a little wanting. Connectivity is OK -- Optical, ARC (over HDMI), and Bluetooth -- there is no 3.5mm input which isn't entirely surprising but worth mentioning. Of these ARC is technically your best option with optical being an entirely sufficient fallback option for a 2.1 system like this. There is a simple display behind the grill that clearly shows your volume, bass, active input, voice mode, and soundfield as you cycle through those options on the remote.

This Sony soundbar has a wireless subwoofer that I thought would really add a nice punch to fill the open area of the basement room. The old soundbar was connected via an optical cable and it talked perfectly to the TV and the TV remote even controlled the sound flawlessly. So I moved the old Samsung soundbar to my bedroom where I have a smaller Samsung TV and connected it through Wi-Fi. It continued to work perfectly. This is honestly the first soundbar that I have used (I have had 4), that the TV's remote did not control the soundbar volume. I found it crazy to have to use 2 separate remotes, one for the TV and one for the sound. So I decided to unplug the optical cable and connect via Bluetooth since the TV can output audio through Bluetooth as well. Once I did that, the TVs remote controlled the volume, so problem solved right? Wrong. Once you turn off the TV, all communication stops and you have to initiate the entire connection each time you power up your TV. I find that extremely annoying as I am used to both the TV and soundbar just working. Maybe I am just too picky. My last step was to connect the soundbar to the TV via HDMI via my TV's ARC output. This is supposed to be the best way for the 2 devices to communicate effortlessly. So I had to squeeze my arm behind the TV to unplug my Firestick, plug in an HDMI cable, relocate another HDMI cable, relocate the Firestick, then setup an HDMI splitter since one port is now occupied by the soundbar. This should finally do it right? Not quite. The soundbar does recognize the soundbar, and the TV remote does control it. But then once you power down the TV and power it back up again, it loses communication again! It starts off with the TV sound and then 50% of the time it cuts over to the soundbar and 50% of the time I have to manually switch the audio out to the soundbar. Wow, I have never been so frustrated in a soundbar before. I am not sure if this is a matter of Samsung and Sony simply not playing nice, or if the soundbar is just this bad. The sound of the speakers is very good. The voices are clear and the bass is good. Nothing overpowering, but this is not a huge sub. I am actually very pleased with the actual sound performance. I can hear everything with no issues and it has very good range. Overall, I am just not happy with how the soundbar talks to my TV and it is actually a downgrade from my previous soundbar. It does sound nice, but if you have a Samsung TV, you may want to consider a Samsung soundbar. I do not know if the communication is better with this soundbar and a Sony TV, but I think I could have done better.

I find that extremely annoying as I am used to both the TV and soundbar just working. Maybe I am just too picky. My last step was to connect the soundbar to the TV via HDMI via my TV's ARC output. This is supposed to be the best way for the 2 devices to communicate effortlessly. So I had to squeeze my arm behind the TV to unplug my Firestick, plug in an HDMI cable, relocate another HDMI cable, relocate the Firestick, then setup an HDMI splitter since one port is now occupied by the soundbar. This should finally do it right? Not quite. The soundbar does recognize the soundbar, and the TV remote does control it. But then once you power down the TV and power it back up again, it loses communication again! It starts off with the TV sound and then 50% of the time it cuts over to the soundbar and 50% of the time I have to manually switch the audio out to the soundbar. Wow, I have never been so frustrated in a soundbar before. I am not sure if this is a matter of Samsung and Sony simply not playing nice, or if the soundbar is just this bad. The sound of the speakers is very good. The voices are clear and the bass is good. Nothing overpowering, but this is not a huge sub. I am actually very pleased with the actual sound performance. I can hear everything with no issues and it has very good range. Overall, I am just not happy with how the soundbar talks to my TV and it is actually a downgrade from my previous soundbar. It does sound nice, but if you have a Samsung TV, you may want to consider a Samsung soundbar. I do not know if the communication is better with this soundbar and a Sony TV, but I think I could have done better.
Wish I would have kept the box and everything so I could return it. First off, the instructions seem straightforward, but they didn’t help when I had to reset the whole thing out the box. After it connected, the first couple days were great. Then I encountered synching problems where the sound wasn’t accurate with what was on our Flat Screen. Then the subwoofer started disconnecting. We don’t have other wifi devices around it. The most annoying thing is that, at least twice a day, when we go to lower or turn up the value, it will suddenly get EXTREMELY loud for 5 seconds. And it doesn’t stop no matter how much we try and turn it down, before it finally lowers the volume. However, the wireless is limited to specific Sony televisions so unless you happen to have one of those, you're going to use up one of the three. If you're like me who has a lot of things connected to your soundbar or TV, well, you're going to rely on your TV inputs a lot more and you're forced to go digital, no analog connections here. I've got a TV, streaming box, video calling camera, and alexa device to connect. Previously, these all went to the soundbar of my projector (plus a second streaming box which I'm no longer using). Now, these go to the TV with the alexa device connecting to the soundbar via bluetooth. The optical and HDMI arc input are effectively the same as far as the soundbar is concerned (you can only switch between TV and Bluetooth). That said, the soundbar chooses which one to use based on what it detects first so you could theoretically have another device hooked up and as long as one is off, the soundbar will play from the other without any confusions as to what you'd get. Volume and bass wise, this is decent. Definitely higher power than the TV speakers and better sound. The TV can have a wooden sound at times which isn't noticeable when the kids are watching their shows but is pretty obvious when watching something drama or sci/fi. It's definitely an improvement over the TV and great to multi-task as my streaming music player when the TV is not being used. Definitely great for stereo sound, but after having lived with my virtual surround sound, I think if you're dropping down, you will miss the additional channels. I did not have any issues pairing over Bluetooth and was able to stream my music flawlessly. It seems the soundbar stays connected over bluetooth even when you switch inputs so there's no lag waiting for a Bluetooth reconnect. The remote is ok, worked well, and was pretty straightforward. I liked that there were no submenus to jump into, each button was pretty straightforward giving you direct control. My rating is 4 stars. Sleek design, looks well made, straightforward remote and inputs. Perhaps having a center channel and the ability to add some additional wireless surround speakers to turn this into a 5.1 surround system would be nice. Also, having the optical input be it's own input would help with the relative dearth of inputs. This is definitely geared towards homes where the smart TV does most of the heavy lifting in terms of inputs and being just a 2.1 system, that kind of makes sense.

Having experience with other basic surround sound systems in the past, the specs on this one seemed perfect, and the wireless sub was a bonus. Setup was standard, but it was obvious they were looking for impact, as the bar and subwoofer are well oversized for their power. The sound is the disappointing part. It is basically two tweeters in the bar, and one subwoofer. Sound adjustment is poor as well, as volume controls the bar, and a separate +/- 10 option is available to proportionally control the sub. In using the sound bar the sound is full and loud in mids and highs, and the subwoofer adds a richness that appropriately balances against the soundbar itself. Overall, the sound bar has great sound, it may not have some of the features of the more expensive options but it doesn't need them. It's a great addition to any home TV setup for someone looking for more from their home theater experience.

This subwoofer and soundbar are both very nice for my needs and also my budget. I think the quality is very nice from a leader like Sony and the functionality is easy to use.

When it comes to design, I would say overall, its attractive, but nothing special. Setup: Getting the sound bar and subwoofer setup with my TV, a Hisense U6G, was a breeze. I tested all 3 connections, optical cable, Bluetooth and finally the HDMI via ARC port. 1. HDMI ARC: Overall, I prefer the HDMI ARC connection; the sound bar automatically goes into standby mode when the TV is turned off and the sound bar volume is controlled with the TV remote. 2. Bluetooth: The Bluetooth connection worked well, I didn’t notice any lag in video/audio (some TV’s have a feature to adjust lag). This method on connecting is clean, leaving no wires to hide. I noticed when I powered down the TV, the sound bar stayed on and was in pairing mode. This is probably because I have 1 device, the TV, paired to the sound bar, and when the TV is off, it no longer detected the device and automatically went into “pairing” mode. 3. The optical cable works fine as well, but the sound bar won’t go into standby mode when the TV is turned off and you’ll need the sound bar remote to adjust the volume. The sound bar can be wall mounted, there are mounting holes on the back. They also include a template but does not include screws or mounting hardware. Sound: My TV room is approximately 500 sq feet, the sound bar and subwoofer is loud enough to fill the room. To test, I played some of my favorite movies that have good sound. This includes The Matrix, TOP gun and Transformers. The subwoofer produced good base, the sound bar while it was loud, I didn’t really hear any “surround sound” and this was with the Sound field turned on. I didn’t hear jets flying from one side of the living room to another. I realize it’s a 2.1 sound bar and perhaps I should not really expect that. In the lobby scene of the Matrix, again, the subwoofer supplied plenty of base with the gun shots, but the rest of the sound coming from the sound bar could’ve been more clear and crisp, the bullet casing dropping on the floor wasn’t as clear as I hoped, it didn’t have that pitch that I’d expect to hear. Overall, if you’re looking for bang for the buck, this is a very good sound bar and subwoofer package. You get good, loud sound and deep base, great for Xbox games and movies. If you’re looking for surround sound, crisp, clear audio, look elsewhere and increase your budget. Pros: 1. Loud 2. Subwoofer has good base 3. Reasonably priced Cons: 1. Audio could be more clear 2. I have tried 3 set up's recently and all 3 have their pluses and minuses. most lower cost sound bar systems seem to use lower quality speakers in the bar and, with simple sealed enclosures and use the sub to make up the difference. This system did great with quick bass (something the Bose bass module 500 does not do) drums, mid bass, maybe not rumble the floor sub bass but I would rather give up sub bass for harder hitting bass that this has. I had a hard time dealing with the holes in the frequency response and generally lower quality vocals and highs vs my Bose TV speaker. this system really hated the Halo video game (the title screen has some monks singing and you can barely hear them for some reason) but, with ... Morewhich trade off's does one feel they can live with?
