I wasn’t that impressed with the spatial audio. Sony 365 spatial audio, sounded good, but didn’t seem to be compatible with Atmos, playback through Tidal, and I used the headphones app to optimise for Tidal. My wife praised the noise cancelling, saying that she nearly missed a phone call from her work phone, with the phone right in front of her. I tried the noise cancelling whilst on a call, and had some music on in the background. Music wasn’t at a high volume, but certainly easy to hear without noise cancelling on. However you can still hear some background noise whilst noise cancelling is engaged. I think the noise cancelling could be better, but does a decent job. Very clear voice calling, probably clearer than using my iPhone.Switching devices is extremely easy, I was using these for a bit of gaming, plugged directly into the controller audio jack, and when I stopped using them, switched over to my phone. I didn’t have to select anything they were already connected.Sound quality wise, they are decent, I don’t think they’d blow anyone away, but would be great for when exercising. They have a decent amount of bass, and can easily be adjusted to your liking using the app. They are very comfortable, and hold your head very well with little movement. I have probably used these on and off for around 15 hours at medium high volume, and no signs of needing a recharge. You can also plug them directly into an audio source, like a console controller for example with the supplied cable. All in all a good pair of headphones, which I would recommend for taking out and about.

Great quality and priced product.

My first impressions of the Sony WH-CH720N Bluetooth Headphones were they looked quite cheap, however I was in for a surprise. They are a sleek simplistic design that’s more focused on sound quality and usability. The packaging of the product was in keeping with typical top Sony quality with the eco-friendly vision, as with the product itself its made from recycled plastic. Unfortunately no travel case is included like more premium products but not a big deal. For their price, the noise cancellation is really good and sound of the AAC audio with DSEE in the on position is really good. From flat I found out that a 10 minute charge you can get about 4 hours of use.The usability of this product is great as with all Sony products, with a quick set up and easy to follow guide. As with the buttons they are easy to feel. The headset supports Siri, Google and Alexa assistants for more ease of use and functionality. It’s always great to use the Sony headphone app with these products to download and update the headphones with ease. All in all these are a great quality product for the price, and I definitely recommend them over other products in their price range.

I bought these headphones from a 'famous' retailer seeing as I was looking for a cost effective version of the noise cancelling line up. I had previously tried different brands but was disappointed with the sound quality.I have to say these headphones have impressed me from an audio quality point of view. I find that the flatter/neutral sound with a little emphasis on bass works well. The main gripe I had about similarly priced headphones was the over the top emphasis on bass. I am not saying these headphones lack bass, but rather it's well controlled and hold up well even compared to the more expensive ones. The pads and the head coverage feels good, the weight is perfect if you want a very portable light pair of headphones, though I will say Sony should have ... MoreI bought these headphones from a 'famous' retailer seeing as I was looking for a cost effective version of the noise cancelling line up. I have seen a couple of reviews that mention 'great connection' but so far I have had the opposite experience to them. It seems that these headphones keep having a problem, if you are listening to audio via an app, sometimes these headphones will turn themselves off and back on again. This is very strange behaviour, and it was happening often enough that I decided to send these back to the retailer, they were kind enough to send me a replacement pair asap, but unfortunately it seems that these replacements have the exact same issue. I updated the headphone firmware, using the latest Sony headphone app. My phone (S23 Plus) is up to date with everything so I don't see what the problem is. It seems according to a few people online they seem to be having similar issues to me with connection. The only thing I found sort of helps is not using the Sony headphone app, but that defeats the object as I want full control of these headphones.I hope that this problem gets sorted otherwise I will be sending these back and never looking back at Sony for their headphones. I own several pair of headphones and they do not have this Bluetooth issue.

Great value for money

At first glance, the design of the WH-CH720N Wireless Headphones follows the design language of Sony’s more premium products. These are a good looking pair and my only comment would be that the buttons could perhaps feel a bit more premium. However, the headphones are made from recycled material which is great for reducing plastic waste. They come in a good looking eco-friendly box, wrapped in a protective cloth and other accessories include a short usb-c charging cable and a connection cable should you need a wired listening experience. There is no travelling case included. The set is lightweight and headband comfortable. Buttons are easy to find but takes a little bit getting used to so not accidentally activate voice control instead of increasing the volume.A press on the power button let’s you know battery status by a voice but changing between ambient sound or noise cancelling is not announced in the same way but with a chime initially leaving me in the dark of what setting is on. It didn’t take me long to learn the two different tones for on/off, however. The earpads are really good and of Sony’s usual quality, enclosing the ear from outside noise. I find these are comfortable to wear for an extended time. The connection with my Sony Xperia 1IV was lightning fast. As soon as I pressed the power button on the 720s a pop up appeared on my phone prompting the connection. Really good! It would have taken me longer using the connector cable. The sound is good and noise cancelling works well. There is enough volume to let outsiders hear what you are listening to.Voice control with Google Assistant is activated via a long press on play/pause button and works as expected.I’d say these are a really good pair of headphones for the price point and would recommend any day.

Great value, lightweight, great economy version
28 March 2023

Having used a set of premium Sony headphones recently, I can say that for about a third of the price these are a great option for almost all of the functionality of the top of the range.Firstly the battery life is fantastic, quick to charge for a few hours, or not that long for a full charge for over a day's worth of listening, as long as you limit the noise cancelling / ambient modes for that day when you don't need them. They don't have the touch sensors on the cups, but instead buttons that at times seem a little close together on the right cup for volume, pause and the noise cancelling options, but you get use to them.USB C charging port, power on/off and stereo jack on the left cup: they come with a cable for the jack too... but I don't have a device any ... MoreHaving used a set of premium Sony headphones recently, I can say that for about a third of the price these are a great option for almost all of the functionality of the top of the range.Firstly the battery life is fantastic, quick to charge for a few hours, or not that long for a full charge for over a day's worth of listening, as long as you limit the noise cancelling / ambient modes for that day when you don't need them. They don't have the touch sensors on the cups, but instead buttons that at times seem a little close together on the right cup for volume, pause and the noise cancelling options, but you get use to them.USB C charging port, power on/off and stereo jack on the left cup: they come with a cable for the jack too... but I don't have a device any longer that isn't Bluetooth to connect to.A handy red dot on the inner right shows you which one is right. They are lightweight yet sturdy in the feel of them, well cushioned on the ears and headband, and perfectly adjustable, staying at the right 'width' when you get you head to fit. They're not quite built the same as the premium version, but the fact that they are lighter seems in some way to make up for it.No case with these - no great shame, but watch you don't sit on them when they're not on your head.Where these really make you think twice about the premium version is the Sony Headphone app: all the functionality of the better headphones with an array of settings in various modes and setting that all of a sudden you're thinking you made a good choice. You can connect to a second device, a personal favourite of mine when working on a laptop and taking calls on a phone. The app will 'learn' your status and adapt the sound settings accordingly, useful if you always want noise cancelling or ambient on in various scenarios. Also within the app you can analyse you ears, use Google or Alexa, abuse the equalizer, and even earn 'badges' as you utilise your new headphones in various settings and modes that I didn't even know were a thing.All-in-all a great buy from Sony, superb value, maybe not quite the noise cancelling ability that you can get for more money through Sony, but the sound quality is exceptional for the price, and the app makes them quite clever really!

Really comfortable - Clear high quality sound

Really comfortable headphones delivering clear, high quality sound.I was pleased to have the chance to review Sony’s new CH720N, as I am a regularly user of noise cancelling headphones.First impressions out of the box were good - Clean uncluttered styling, surprisingly light weight, yet despite this a very solid quality feel to the product.Easy to set up –already 70+% charged when they arrived – and the Quick Start Guide was simple to follow. Note the full guide in pdf format extends to 129 pages, and time spent reading those sections that are relevant to your use would definitely be worthwhile!Comfort – some over ear headphones can feel cumbersome and heavy after time, but not these. They are very comfortable to wear for lengthy periods. Very soft, comfortable padding on the headband and earcups. Worth noting that this was a joint verdict with my wife (and she has much smaller ears than me) Also note we both wear glasses - which can make some types of headphones uncomfortable – not these, though.Sound quality / performance – again, very impressive. Key words I noted down after initial use included “clear, clean, crisp, cool, precise.” It is important to consider what the CH720Ns are being compared with. Also note that Sony’s CH720Ns are “only” a mid-range offering, with their top end models costing well over double. My personal comparison is against my 10-year-old top of the range over ear plug in headphones from a leading German manufacturer. I have no hesitation in rating the Sony product above my older ones on both comfort and sound quality. Particularly noteworthy was overall clarity, which is important as much of my listening is to podcasts on iPhone or films or catch-up TV on the iPad. Listening to music such as Stones, Led Zeppelin or Blondie is equally good, with the headphones delivering well on bass and mid-range. Whether with spoken word or heavy-ish music, the noise cancelling works very well-but really comes into its own on a plane!Other features worth noting – I like the small, raised dot at the rear of the left earpad which makes it easy to check you have the head set on right way round. The fact that tapping the power button gives you an update on charge level remaining is also very useful. The provision of a cable to allow wired connection is a nice thought, though with 35-hour charge life I cannot see it being used that often. Particularly useful is the “Headphones Connect” app which you install on your phone. Easy to manage Bluetooth connections and switch between devices. Note it was very easy to set up iPad and also Bravia TV in addition to the iPhone. The app is very good in allowing listening experience to be customised, but also has a lot of other stuff on activity records etc which I doubt I will ever use.Minor niggles – No carry case included, and headband does not fold. However, the earpads swivel flat and should fit better that way in a handbag or briefcase (see photos). The lack of a case also means there is a potential to lose the provided cables.Summary – It’s difficult to believe these only sit in the middle of Sony’s range! They really are very smart, comfortable, noise cancelling wireless headphones that deliver excellent sound quality with long battery life. I definitely recommend them

The left side of the headphone equips you with; a type c port, 3.5mm aux port, and a power button. The right side of the headphones provides you with; volume control buttons, AM&NC (noise cancelling and ambient mode), and an all new switching button. The auto switch feature is a great new addition to functionality on Sony' part. With this addition i can't help but take full advantage, having both a mobile and tablet within my eco system so i can seamlessly transfer the connection of my headphones by just playing audio on the other and pausing the existing audio. For this feature to be actioned you will need to sign into the Sony pairing app on all devices you would like to have connection with, and it's as simple as that.My commentsoverall these have to be my favourite headphone to date. The fitting is perfect, sound quality is amazing, i desired a pair of headphones with this quality and form factor, and best thing yet they're not to pricey. I travel to and from work via public transport so i'm using these on the daily for about 3-4 hours and the charge holds very well and not really needing a charge for another 3 or 4 days since last charge., if you do need a charge it'll take less than hour to facilitate a full charge.

The Sony WH-CH720N Wireless Headphones are amazing! When you open up the box, the first thing you spot is Sony's no-hassle approach to documentation. No unwieldy setup guides or instruction manuals here. Just a QR code for you to scan with your phone camera, or you can use the website link. This takes you to a fully descriptive set up and help guide. There is even a printable PDF version of the guide that you can download and keep if you want to. But to be fair to Sony, most of the setup and functionality of the headphones is intuitive and it doesn't require much head scratching. What you get in the box is the set of stereo headphones, a short USB Type-C cable (USB-A to USB-C) which is about 20 cm or 8 inches long, a headphone cable which is about 1.2 m or 48 inches ... MoreThe Sony WH-CH720N Wireless Headphones are amazing! There is even a printable PDF version of the guide that you can download and keep if you want to. But to be fair to Sony, most of the setup and functionality of the headphones is intuitive and it doesn't require much head scratching. What you get in the box is the set of stereo headphones, a short USB Type-C cable (USB-A to USB-C) which is about 20 cm or 8 inches long, a headphone cable which is about 1.2 m or 48 inches long, and a short leaflet with the Sony guarantee.I decided to charge the headphones first, using the USB Type-C cable, but they looked to be almost fully charged when they arrived. I left the headphones to charge up fully for about 30 minutes. When they are plugged in, the Bluetooth indicator on the left speaker unit of the headphones lights up in orange. Once fully charged, the indicator turns off.I switched the headphones on using the power button on the left speaker unit. The headphones powered up and the Bluetooth indicator switched to a steady blue light, flashing twice every second or so. This meant it was in pairing mode. The Bluetooth indicator is just one of the ways the headphones let you know about their status. The headphones connected effortlessly via Bluetooth to my Android phone. Putting on the headphones for the first time, I used the adjustable head band to find the perfect fit for my head. The headset is extremely comfortable to wear. It just feels like a natural extension to my head. The sound from the speakers is incredible. Crisp and clear. It took me a couple of tries to get used to the little buttons under the right speaker unit. I kept pushing the noise cancelling button instead of the play or volume control buttons. But I soon figured it out. The volume control buttons work exactly as expected, and the play button, depending on how many times you press it, allows you to play or pause (one press), skip forward (two rapid presses) or skip backward (three rapid presses) any audio tracks that are playing on your connected device. The noise cancelling functionality is amazing. I was very impressed. I was listening to some music that was playing on my phone while my Sony Bravia TV was on in the background. Without the noise cancelling feature switched on, I could still hear the audio from the TV coming through faintly in the background. But the moment I pressed the noise cancelling button, all ambient noise dropped significantly. It was like magic.I love the fact that there is a small, tactile dot on the rim of the left speaker which is practically invisible but in just the right spot that you can feel it with your thumb or finger as you pick up the headphones. This is great for orienting the headphones when putting them on, particularly in low light conditions, or simply because you don't want to have to check for the little L and R symbols on the inside of the headband each time.I also like the fact that when you press the power button while the headset is on, a voice guidance indicating the remaining battery charge can be heard. In my case, I heard a lady's melodious voice say, "battery fully charged". The Bluetooth indicator also flashes orange for about 15 seconds if the remaining battery charge is 10% or lower when the headset is turned on.When the headphones are connected to a mobile phone, the play button also lets you answer phone calls and there is a mic located on the base of the left speaker that allows you to speak and be heard by your caller. I tried this out. I got my wife to call me from her phone while she was in another part of the house, and I was able to answer the call by pressing the play button on the headphones. I could hear my wife clearly and the audio quality was much better than I had ever experienced with any wired in-ear earphones. My wife, in turn, said that the sound quality of my voice coming through to her phone was excellent. She could hear me quite clearly when I was talking through the microphone on the headphones.I even tried the noise cancelling feature while I was on the call, and this was equally amazing. It focusses your attention on your caller's voice. The sound was crisp, clear and without distortion. There were no audible ambient noises and so no distractions. I could concentrate on the call and what was being said. While I had the headphones on a text message and a social media message came through to my phone. By pressing the play button on the right speaker unit, I was able to listen to the messages being read out to me in order. After each message was read out, I had the option, for a couple of seconds, to press the play button again to give my verbal response through the mic on the headphones, which my phone then used with its speech-to-text functionality to reply to the message. My next test was to pair the headphones with my Windows 11 laptop. I pressed the power button on the headphones for about 5 seconds and the same delightful lady's voice said, "pairing". I was then able to use the "add device" button in the Windows Bluetooth & devices settings menu to pair the Bluetooth headset with my laptop. It took seconds to do. I listened to a few songs on my playlist while working on some digital artwork.Later, I played one of my survival games on my laptop and I was delighted with the noise cancelling aspect of the headphones. I became thoroughly engrossed in my game and the crystal-clear sounds, unfettered by ambient noise, made for a more chilling atmosphere as I made my way around the game.Overall, I am absolutely delighted with the design, appearance, and performance of these headphones. They look sleek and elegant, they feel comfortable to wear even for long periods, and they pack a real punch in terms of their sound quality and functionality. I would recommend these headphones to anyone who loves their audiobooks, gaming, or music and demands exceptional audio quality. You will not be disappointed!

Sony Delivering More Bangers for your Buck
3 April 2023

I’ve been using the Sony WH CH720N headphones for just over three weeks now. So I feel it’s fair to say that I have put them through their paces. Below is an honest review of what I have found. The first thing you notice about the packaging is that it’s very minimal, Eco-friendly with zero plastic, which I’m all for. There is no excuse for the over elaborate over the top packaging nowadays with the environmental impact. Kudos to Sony for not doing this.On the back of the box, you get some of the information about the features which I will come to a bit later. In the box USB C & Aux cables along with the warranty pamphlet. The headphones themselves are wrapped in a micro-fibre cloth to protect them. This is something that I feel could have been a carry bag from the same material as there is no bag or case included. I understand that these aren’t marketed as top-end in Sony’s product range, but in my opinion, it would have been a nice touch for minimal effort.Once you unwrap the headphones you get a feel for exactly how lightweight they are – and they seriously are. They come in at a remarkable 192g. The is a huge selling point for me as you literally forget that you’re wearing them, even for long periods. The design is modern and flowing with all the buttons conveniently placed where you’d like when wearing them. The ear cups are soft, pliable and deep too. They will accommodate even the biggest of ears (such as mine) with zero discomfort due to the depth. The cup rim itself does not get clammy even when exercising. I spent many hours over the last three weeks out doing just that and have zero complaints. The headband is slim but still very cushioned and extremely secure with the same soft padding quality. The plastic shell does feel a little cheap, but this is what enables Sony to produce such a lightweight design.I’ve not been able to find any information about Ip rating so you may want to be careful when out in the rain if you have them around your neck, but I wouldn’t envisage this being an issue when wearing them. So, onto the controls. You have your standard buttons that you would expect. The volume up and down are either side of the function button. These are arranged into a three-button strip. The volume controls need to be pressed each time you want to move this up and down. Holding the button will not keep increasing or decreasing the music, podcast or call. This is something that Sony may be able to rectify with a software update. The function button in the middle is raised slightly to be able to differentiate between the buttons but I didn’t find that made much of a difference. When I first started using them, I found myself getting to either end of the button strip, then trying to guess which one was which. That did get easier over the hours of usage. The function button stops and starts the music, answers and ends calls with a single press. Double tap skips forward a track and triple will go back one. If you hold the button down, it’ll activate the digital assistant of your choice. You have the power button, charging port and aux cable port on the left side and the Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) and Ambient Mode (AMB)on the right. The features that 720Ns have are remarkable for the price. The Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) uses the same software and V1 processor as Sony’s WH 1000MX5s (£349) do. This is mind-blowing given the price between them and the 720Ns (£99). The ANC works quite well but I did get some wind come through whilst out and about even though Sony have installed a specific microphone to combat this. There was no pressure on the ears whilst using this though and on the whole I was happy with it. The Ambient Mode again works ok in certain environments, but this is something I’m not a massive fan of. I’d much prefer to pause my music and speak to someone rather than do half and half. The Multipoint is a feature that I was not expecting in this price range of headphones and one that I welcomed with open arms. Being able to link two devices via Bluetooth made my working day a lot easier. I was able to connect to my work laptop and my phone at the same time without having to switch between them in the menus. Listening to music on my phone and them a video call comes through on the laptop and I did not have to do anything other than accept the call was a godsend. When it came to putting these to the real test of sound quality I was absolutely astounded by their performance. Given the cheap feel of the plastic I wasn’t holding out much hope other than something that sounded tinny and hollow. I could not have been more wrong. The depth that they pump out literally left me open-mouthed. And I can tell you that does not happen often. I quickly found myself challenging them with different genres. Metal, folk, Drum and Bass, all of which just kept my wonderment flowing. Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE) that Sony developed is absolutely in full effect and with the 360-degree audio I found myself turning the lights off at night and listening to track after track after track in amazement. There are a multitude of options and customisations through the Sony Headphone app. There are a number of equaliser settings on there for you to choose from and a couple of slots for you to customise your own. You can setup adaptive sound, so that the headphones can change your settings dependant on what activity that you’re doing. It even goes as far as to change it on your location. Exactly how many of these I will use long term I’m not so sure, but it’s always nice to have options. This brings me nicely onto the battery life. I’ve got to say that I was a little sceptical when I saw that Sony were marketing that a full charge lasts up to 35 hours with ANC on and 50 with it off so that was something that I wanted I see for myself. I am more than happy to report that they have absolutely delivered on this and a nice function that you can click the power button once and it’ll tell you how much life your battery has left. An even better one is the quick charge. So if you do find yourself in the rare situation of them being dead, 3 minutes will get you a full hour of usage. In summary I would 100% recommend these to anyone looking for lower budget headphones, and even those who have money to spare. Ok, they don’t have all the bells and whistles of the high-end products like ear detection and touch pads, but what they do have is wow factor in the bucket loads. How on earth Sony have managed to achieve this and can sell them at this price is beyond me.

WH-CH720N Sony Noise Cancelling Headphones
19 March 2023

I cannot remember wearing a more comfortable pair of headphones. The WH-CH720N have clearly been very carefully designed for comfort and performance. Firstly, they are lightweight but not too light, the adjustable headband is comfortably padded but not bulky and the softly padded phones fit over the ears as if they were made to measure. It immediately becomes apparent that these phones are meant to worn without hindering your movement. When you put them on, they want to stay on your head whether you are walking, exercising, working or doing nearly any daily chore. When you put them on, they want to stay on your head whether you are walking, exercising, working or doing nearly any daily chore. A great feature, unlike all my previous phones, is that they do not creak, brilliant. They are so comfortable that it is almost like putting on a favourite jumper to be worn for as long as you want without becoming uncomfortable or a hindrance.I should not forget to mention how well sound insulating these headphones are. Put them on and your favourite sounds are as clear as a bell without being hindered by the day to day ‘outside’ noises. The WH-CH720N can hold up to a massive 35 hour charge and recharging seems to take very little time. A feature I really like is, when not in use, these headphones rotate so they are flat and you can leave the padded earphones upwards so as to avoid any damage. To initially set up your headphones Sony provide an app called Headphones Connect which you can quickly download and immediately ensure that the app and your phones have the up to date software that they require. Take a few moments to familiarise yourself with the controls. Sony have cleverly put a small tactile dot on the left unit so that you can make sure the headphones are the right way around without having to look at them. They also have left and right written on the inside of the headband. Its worthwhile downloading the Sony help guide which shows pictorials of the headphones and documents the location of the controls and their functions.Your WH-CH720N can be connected via bluetooth or via the supplied cable. Your favourite music or broadcasts can be obtained via your iPhone or iPad and you can even accept incoming phone calls which can be taken even in noisy surroundings. Your headphones can connect to two bluetooth devices at a time so you can switch between them. For instance, if you are listening to your iPad and a call comes in on your iPhone.I should not forget to tell you about the sound quality, after all, it is the primary function of headphones! In short, brilliant. The Sony people have produced a product that provides extraneous noise cancelling and uses their Digital Sound Enhancement Engine to get the sounds as close to the original recording quality as they can.The WH-CH720N represents fantastic value for money, quality, functionality and performance.
