I use this almost entirely hand held either bracing with knees or using higher iso. At small apertures it goes soft, so using practical f stops for DOF, it goes soft a lot. And hand holding requires larger iso creating noise. Topaz does a reasonable job sharpening and reducing noise if you are careful to inspect results before choosing settings. The extension of the tube is less desirable that the built in zoom of the 70-200. Overall, I get cleaner images with the 70-200, but using a 2X teleconverter is a bit of a pain. I take the 70-200 into narrow slot canyons, and take the 100-400 into the larger open spaces. I can use a tripod to lower the iso, but unless I focus stack, I have to live with the softness. I think all these are just the tradeoffs of making lenses. ... MoreI use this almost entirely hand held either bracing with knees or using higher iso. I have used the Sony G 70-300mm lens along with the Sony G 24-105mm lens for nature hikes but purchased the 100-400mm GM lens to gain more reach for wildlife. It is not a cheap lens, but the photo quality is amazing, and you can easily see difference between it and the less expensive 70-300mm lens. Yes, it's sharp. But there's also something else that's hard to put into words. The images just look better. This is not a lightweight lens, and I'm definitely not a weightlifter. However, it's just light enough to carry and use handheld for half a day or so. It actually weighs more than my camera body...I went back and forth between this lens and the Sony GM 200-600mm since the latter is a better range for bird photography. I do wish the 100-400mm had a short throw like the internally zooming 200-600mm one. But at the end of the day, I chose portability over reach and am quite happy with the choice. The other lens is just too large for me to realistically pack and carry.Anecdotally, I also tried the Sigma 100-400mm F 5-6.3 lens and was not pleased with missed auto-focus on burst shots or the actual image quality. It's not really a fair comparison since the Sigma is much more affordable. But the Sony lens, for me, had better auto-focus performance and image quality (actually the Sony G 70-300mm was also superior and remains my choice for long hikes when the 100-400mm is too heavy). The build quality of the 100-400mm is also superior over the Sigma, and it is compatible with Sony's teleconverters. The Sigma also has a fairly long (and variable) min focal distance and was not convenient for close-up shots of flowers and bugs on a narrow hiking trail.100-400mm is useful range for most things on a hike except wide landscapes (assuming you have enough light since the Sony 100-400mm lens isn't particularly fast), and I highly recommend this lens if it is within your budget. It is a worthwhile investment you will enjoy for years.

The purchasing experience with B&H was excellent as always. The lens is very manageable for hand holding, the OSS works well and the optics are superb! Typical GM lens in terms of performance, build quality and handling!I also have the 70-200mm f2.8 GM ver1 lens and the 100-400 handles very much the same way. Quick, accurate focus and very good tracking. The fact that it is not internal focus is really the biggest difference. The bokeh is great with the long end compression this lens has!Very happy with this one and the fact that the minimum focus distance is so close is just an added bonus when it comes to macro shots!Highly recommend!

When I first purchased a tele lens, I went with the tried and true 70-200. It was fine, but I kept finding myself wishing I had more reach. I opted to sell that in favor of this 100-400. Although I wish it had a wider aperture, I do love this lens. I've had no issues with sharpness throughout the zoom range. The image stabilization is effective. The zoom and focus rings move easily, but not too easily. I appreciate I can modify the friction of the zoom ring on the fly. When tightened I've had no issues with creeping. Autofocus is fine, but I'm not doing any fast action shooting, so I can't speak to the speed. For my use it is fine, but I typically use manual focus.
I'm using this lens on a Sony a7r iii A. I was concerned about the price vs performance but that concern has proven to be unfounded. I made the move from Nikon over to Sony last year and I have been blown away by the performance of my Sony system in all respects. Don't get me wrong, my Nikon D850 was the best DSLR I've ever owned, the problem was finding lenses that could keep up with the camera. Not so with Sony. The Sony 100-400 G-Master is SHARP across all of the Zoom range and the color fidelity is true to life. As a Landscape/Nature photographer for more than 40 years, I can say that this is the best Long lens I have ever owned, including lenses that came at three times the price. This is a High Performance lens in all respects and B&H is the only business that I trust to buy from. Thank You B&H, Thank You Sony.
Like most people who are looking at a tele-zoom for Sony, I was very interested in the Sigma Contemporary 100-400 dg dn. Some weight, size, and price savings in comparison to the GM. I ended up returning 3 of the Sigma's before getting my GM. I kept the first copy of the GM I received. There's a reason the Sigma is $1500 less expensive.I do landscapes, so sharpness past the center of the frame is important to me. From my experience, the Contemporary is more like a 100-200mm that Sigma put a 300mm and a 400mm on the end of. All copies of the Sigma I tested were on an a7rii and all were decentered. I'm sure the Sigma would look better on a 24mp camera. The GM looks to be fully resolving the sensor in the center of the frame from 100-300. I'm sure the Sigma would look better on a 24mp camera. The GM looks to be fully resolving the sensor in the center of the frame from 100-300. It blows the Sigma away here and at the edges. Resolution falls on my copy of the GM at 400mm but trust me it's not much. You're going to need a prime if you want any better at 400.There's no comparison between the two lenses at 400. I heard and saw reviews that said the Sony slightly bested the Sigma at 400mm. Lies! It's a landslide victory for the Sony. All copies of the Sigma weren't useable past the very center of the frame at 400.The issues with the GM are the price, size/ weight in comparison to the Sigma, and the tight/loose zoom setting. I won't comment on the price but while I would rather have a slightly smaller and lighter lens, the GM is not that much bigger than the Sigma. I'm no pro but the tight/loose setting on the GM is useless. There doesn't seem to be much of a difference on my copy between tight and loose. I would rather have a switch that locks it at 100mm, and it always set to loose. There is some zoom creep. All in all, I love the lens. It's good at infinity and minimum focus. Autofocus is accurate and fast. It is sharp all the way out to the edges. Even though the lens is a rockstar, good technique is still needed to get the most out of the lens. I expect to use it for years and would purchase it again.
Two things:1. This particular lens unit is extremely tight when trying to zoom. It should zoom in and out much more smoothly than it actually does (yes, I made sure the tension ring was completely to the loose side).2. In the past, i've been sent reminder emails the day before a return. For some reason these have stopped coming. In my world these are welcome, and I would love to see them return. The past two rentals have neglected to have them. Please bring them back.
I bought this lens few weeks ago. I went out to test this lens today in cloudy day. Took few snaps. What is my impression.Build quality is great. Doesn't feel heavy in hand but eventually you feel it. As paired with my A7R4M its cumulative 2kg. 1.4 kg from lens.Lens zoom part relapse if set on smooth. However if you turn ring towards tight it hold well.Focus is quick but if you have used GM lenses you may feel its not quickest .I think 200-600mm G OSS and 70 to 200mm GM OSS are faster. Works well at 3ft distance in case you wanna shoot something up close.Optics are sharp, but not as sharp as 70-200mm GM OSS.Low light performance is reasonable. Bokeh is creamy. Lens produces superb detail. Noise is very little on high shutter speed even in low light and hand ... MoreI bought this lens few weeks ago. I went out to test this lens today in cloudy day. Noise is very little on high shutter speed even in low light and hand held.Colour reproduction is excellent. When I compare image quality with my SONY FE 24-70GM or FE 70-200GM I feel that its a bit less sharp in detailing. Very difficult to quantify. Its not that its not sharp. Its a great lens I dodnot experience chromatic abrassion. There was no vignetting.Corners maintains sharpness.I have not shot a very tall linear building hence cannot talk about linear distortion. Although it maintained alignment and sharpness when I covered a wide brick wall.Unfortunately I deleted those image. For wild life many times I felt like missing my 200-600mm. But I changed to APSC mode and it was on job again. I didnot felt any loss of quality. It wins on its small length. One can pack 3 lenses and go. As it all fits in small backpack or camera bag unlike 200-600mm G OSS.What is my final opinion, Yes I would buy it, but price is hefty. I would like it to improve at par with FE 70-200mm GM lens. Here I am attaching you few pic from my todays shoot. I used apple photo to edit it. Please leave your comment for me to look into your experience. Its my early review. Thanks for read.
I don't know if this is a lens design issue or something caused by a previous renter, but the zoom ring on this lens was very tight when I received it. Quite the opposite of what I have read about this lens being too loose. It almost felt as though the locking ring was stuck in the lock position.I tried to move it between 100 and 400 several times to see if it would loosen up, but nothing changed.I had the lens out in the cold all night, mounted to my star tracking set up. The next morning, the zoom moved more like I expected. When held in the vertical, the lens will creep and zoom itself when it's not locked. With the lock set, it held the lens as tight as it had the day before.
I bought this for action and animal photography and after almost a year of use I think this product is more like a sore thumb. It's rarely able to lock on fast moving subjects and fails likewise on slow moving objects as well. It's frustrating to put all the efforts for capturing rare moments in remote locations but not able to see anything more that a blurry blob. The success rate of an acceptable action photo out of this lens is about 5%.I will say take your shot with 100-400mm with a teleconverter cause this is as good as your great grandfather's toy telescope.
