This is not high quality kit. It takes a bit of care and time to get any kind of a result. While it comes with a stone, the stone is not really wide enough to prevent sharpening wearing a groove. A wider stone would make it easier to wear the stone evenly. Important if you need it for various width blades. I use a sheet of fine wet and dry paper on a bed of 3 mm laminate. So not great but usable with care.

I first bought Stanley products way back in the 1950s and always have associated them with good quality. I'm afraid however that I can't say this about the honing guide with this sharpening kit as I can only describe it as rubbish. It is made of cheap materials, tin plated steel and zinc based alloy and plastic. Fitting blades into it is very hit and miss and the adjustment screws are too small. I bought it as a replacement for a previous Stanley guide which used the single screw with reverse thread design and which was nicely made many years ago and which unfortunately I have misplaced. Why they have changed to this poor design I can't imagine.

Absolute RUBBISH. Bought this to replace my old worn out Stanley honing guide. Very disappointed with how the quality had dropped. No longer made in england the wheels come read worn an wobbly the screws are stiff and gravelly and the frame is not square. As for the stone. It is Not a two grade stone but one side has been painted or stained. Both sides are the same very soft stone okay for kitchen knives but so is an old brick.

Difficult to know where to place this. It's not good enough for a professional woodworker and it would likely be frustrating for an amateur. Build quality isn't great and the stone too course for a really Sharp tip. It will get you by if you don't need to do fine stuff and don't expect it to last too long
The tool for holding the chisels/blades is first class. The stone itself is rubbish . It absorbed the oil readily and then deformed so it is no longer a flat bed, more like a banana. I wouldn’t have believed that possible until I saw it happen .
This set is good value. Quality is mixed. Some accountant has had the angle guide replaced with plastic and worse, where the screws used to run on alloy end retainers, these are now a cheap nasty plastic. To get a good grip on a 38mm firmer and stop it wandering off 90 degrees, I had to tighten hard. On release, both nasty plastic bits had detached from the threads and rolled out on to the floor. Eventually recovered and super glued in place. The stone’s good, the oil is good, the honing guide will probably be fine for dainty small bevel edge chisels and plane blades. The whole thing came in an unnecessary single use plastic security blister of the sort that will spend hundreds of years in landfill or pollute our oceans. If you’re expecting European standards of ... MoreThis set is good value. And if you’re expecting the sort of quality from the Stanley brand your granddad got, forget that too.
Can't say much about the stone and the oil. It's a stone and a bottle of oil !! The honing guide isn't great and there are better ones available. The plastic honing angle guide is not good and you will generally find that your chisel isn't in the guide straight and you are sharpening your chisel at an angle across the blade. You then need to fiddle about with how the chisel is set in the guide and push the chisel forward a bit in order to take the squint angle back off the chisel blade then start again with your 25 and 30 degree angles. All a bit finnicky. You would be better just learning to hone your chisels by hand and eye.
Support frame feels a bit stiff and flimsy but works well once set. Angle indicator is useful. Screws tend to jam tight but don't work loose. Stone is narrower than plane blade so you need to vary position side to side whilst running along. For this reason if you have to remove much metal it's best to do the bulk of grinding with grades of wet and dry papers on a flat surface before finishing on the stone. Very good sharp results obtained.
Bought this set to rough in some second hand timber framing chisels and slicks before I moved on to my expensive waterstones that I didn’t want to put unnecessary wear into. Stone is fine. Not that aggressive, but flat compared to some other cheap products that I have tried in the past for this purpose. The guide however is terrible. The grip isn’t great so you have to frequently check the chisel is mounted correctly. The flip down angle guide is a few degrees out and a waste of time. Better to eyeball the bevel on the stone. The worst feature is the fact that the roller wheels on mine are out of parallel with the clamp. The body is a <2mm stamped plate so a lot of room error in manufacture. If I were to use it I would end up with a lot of expensive skews. It is ... MoreBought this set to rough in some second hand timber framing chisels and slicks before I moved on to my expensive waterstones that I didn’t want to put unnecessary wear into. I've been 'sharpening' my chisels for ages on a decent whetstone, but I could see some of the edges were off square and some a bit rounded (!). I should have got something like this years ago, just that bit of extra guidance to keep edges and angles true. You still need to keep your attention on the job, but the job it does is a good one. Like others have said, you'll probably need to get yourself a can of 3-in-1 soon, (I'd get one at the same time!).Well worth the money
