The guide is poorly designed, constructed from pressed metal and plastic. The clamping design is a top-to-bottom format instead of from the sides. This allows to blade to skew off at an angle without warning. The tightening screws use plastic nuts. Tighten too snug and they'll strip out.The plastic roller on the bottom is medium hardness plastic and damages quickly. The flip-out guide to set the edge angle is a nifty idea, however it is plastic with a loose plastic hinge and plenty of play. Getting things accurate is not an option. The pressed metal frame is not square and cannot be relied on to visually set the blade square in the guide. The stone is very soft. Sharpened one blade and the face of the stone is already hollowing out.Strongly recommend ... MoreThe guide is poorly designed, constructed from pressed metal and plastic. The clamping design is a top-to-bottom format instead of from the sides. This is not high quality kit. It takes a bit of care and time to get any kind of a result. While it comes with a stone, the stone is not really wide enough to prevent sharpening wearing a groove. A wider stone would make it easier to wear the stone evenly. Important if you need it for various width blades. I use a sheet of fine wet and dry paper on a bed of 3 mm laminate. So not great but usable with care.

Absolute RUBBISH. Bought this to replace my old worn out Stanley honing guide. Very disappointed with how the quality had dropped. No longer made in england the wheels come read worn an wobbly the screws are stiff and gravelly and the frame is not square. As for the stone. It is Not a two grade stone but one side has been painted or stained. Both sides are the same very soft stone okay for kitchen knives but so is an old brick.

Arrived with damaged oil stone . Retailer replaced entire set without problem when shown photos of the damage. Awkward to set up , but once firmly clamped it maintains the correct sharpening angle.Clamp screws on mine are tight and sometimes jamb . There is no comfortable way to hold it in use . The first chisel I sharpened with it required a lot of grinding , it was very blunt , resulting in my thumbs almost blistered from contact with the clamp screws. The chisel is now razor sharp! Does the job . Not worth the price ( $52 Aus) . Made in China . Shame on you Stanley , used to be quality .
Bought this primarily to sharpen chisels. Slightly fiddly to set up, but works well enough, especially for the price. The angle guide is a little Intuitive but once you figure it out it's pretty helpful. Between the stones and some cheap sheets of wet-dry sandpaper glued to glass for polishing you can get a pretty good and very consistent edge on chisels. If you're going to be sharpening chisels a lot I would recommend splashing out on a really good guide like Veritas or Lie Nielsen but for hobbyist or infrequent use, it gets the job done.
The tool for holding the chisels/blades is first class. The stone itself is rubbish . It absorbed the oil readily and then deformed so it is no longer a flat bed, more like a banana. I wouldn’t have believed that possible until I saw it happen .
I wish Stanley would provide a user manual explaining how to proceed to sharpen my blades, I had to download user manuals from other brands and look at YouTube videos to get a hint. Also, the stone obviously have 2 different grits, but which ones? It is not even obvious which one is the fine grit of the two. Lame job. Last but not least, I am still not convinced of the value of oil sharpening compared to water. After a few tries, the stone becomes very dirty.
I have not been kind my wood chisels over the years.I have tried to sharpen them when I can using an old whetstone but that was no longer flat and so I had a hunt around for some new sharpening ideas. Time is not on our side for doing these sort of tasks and whilst I was taught ’how to’ by eye, there are now much better products on the market and this is one of them. The instructions are minimal but if you know how to sharpen chisels then you can work it out. I spent a few hours squaring up the ends and then sharpening them up. The width/length guide on the chisel holder is simple enough to use. It holds it true and then you simply roll it back and forth on the lightly oiled whetstone. The whetstone has two different grade faces to use. Only thing is I can not ... MoreI have not been kind my wood chisels over the years.I have tried to sharpen them when I can using an old whetstone but that was no longer flat and so I had a hunt around for some new sharpening ideas. Only thing is I can not remember which is which and for what I want my chisels for it does not seem to make a difference to me. BI seem to use it less now as the chisels are easier to keep sharp using this product.
Support frame feels a bit stiff and flimsy but works well once set. Angle indicator is useful. Screws tend to jam tight but don't work loose. Stone is narrower than plane blade so you need to vary position side to side whilst running along. For this reason if you have to remove much metal it's best to do the bulk of grinding with grades of wet and dry papers on a flat surface before finishing on the stone. Very good sharp results obtained.
I found my old Stanley No. 4 Sweetheart Wood Plane badly rusted and frozen with corrosion after getting out of the hospital. I proceeded to soak and wiggle the parts until I was able to disassemble the entire tool. Elbow grease, wire brushes, and time gave me back my "Sweetheart". Except for the cutting iron! I wanted to resharpen the original iron but was not able to keep the precise angle completely across the cutting surface. Research revealed the Stanley Blade Sharpening System. After opening the package I started treating the stone with the oil provided like my grandfather taught me. While introducing oil to the stone so as to achieve total saturation, I prepared to assemble the iron to the sharpening guide. While introducing oil to the stone so as to achieve total saturation, I prepared to assemble the iron to the sharpening guide. I should have washed my hands before trying to assemble the guide and cutting iron. After fixing that oversight, I finally got the angle correct, iron square to the stone and ready to sharpen the iron. Wow, the guide made everything so simple and easy. Next thing I knew I had all of my chisels and plane irons out and in the guide, happily getting sharpened "correctly"! Thank You Stanley
