Awkward to use. Do not waste your money, would give better rest if you made your own out of old newspapers and a banana skin.

The unit will tell you that ether the entire wall is electrified or that none of it is.- The manual is worse than useless - just a collection of meaningless pictures (literally no words in it)- As a minor point, it is uncomfortable to hold.Save yourself 40 quid and buy a blindfold and pencil instead. You will be no worse off than if you used this tool.

I bought this to replace a cheap no-name stud detector that I had had for 25 years or more. Unfortunately, not using it frequently, the batteries got left in and leaked. I bought a Stanley because I considered it a good make. I was very disappointed. It failed to locate studs reliably and reported electricity continuously. I returned the unit and got a refund.

Not convinced this is completely reliable which is a shame for the price. Any metal seems to trigger the electric warning. It also seems to alert a wider area than is in fact the case, which is not what you need if you have a precise need to know where cabling is. I will use it as an indicator that I need to proceed with caution rather than be confident it is accurate.Seems to be better with stud work. Bit disappointed if I'm honest, but all the reviews for this sort of kit say the same. I'll still use it but more as a guide than a definite.
Bought this item in hopes it would find wooded studs and live wires but it is completely unreliable/useless. Random detection at best, would definitely not recommend wasting your money! About as much good as a chocolate tea pot!
Doesn't really do anything with any reliability. Long winded calibration needs to be done every time. Ridiculously over sensitive AC detection to over 500mm away from the source. Cannot be calibrated for this. A child's toy and nothing more.
Bought this as I trust the Stanley Brand, however, this product did'nt live up to the reputation.Tried locating wiring / pipes in a new home but the FatMax would go off randomly when testing it on walls. Tested above wall sockets but never beeped so can't trust it in areas I can't get too.B&Q refunded without issue.
Have tried calibrating plenty of time on various sections of wall and still get different results every time. Have returned for a refund, but even this is a pain as the packaging gets damaged when opening which is unavoidable. I’d avoid without question!
Very accurate device. Compact and good value for money. Woodies Castlebar were the only stockist in co mayo, in Dec 2020. Click & collect. Helpful & friendlyy staff, both on the phone & in store. Couldn't have been easier.
I have a stud and cable detector which is about fifteen years old and decided to replace it with what should have been something very much better. I feel that this product is almost a complete waste of time and money. I have persevered with it and agree that you do have to learn a technique to get results from it. I still have no confidence in this tool and always use my ancient detector which consistently produces a better result. I would never recommend this product to anyone. B&Q should in my opinion refuse to stock it.
