First fatal flaw is the oil system. The oil leaks from the tool-less caps, and the oil pump doesn't oil the bar well enough destroying the chains and bars. This is well documented in these reviews and online.Second fatal flaw is the hard starting. This claim gets a lot pushback from STIHL, so let me be clear. It's not that it won't start. It's that it's very difficult to start. Following the instructions step-by-step still requires you to eventually pull on a cord. Be ready to pull hard; I'm not sure everyone is capable of starting this saw.

Good saw. However, I don’t like the non adjustable oil pump and it can be hard to start. The chain and bar are drier than I prefer. Seems to have good days and bad days on idling properly. Always having to tweak the LA a bit to keep it running, depending on elevation and environment conditions. It has a lot of compression and can be difficult for some people to start it. It does a great job, but is rather heavy.. The value is good, but it isn’t as good as the old MS290 in my opinion. Decent with an 18” bar and RS chain. However, probably should stick with a 16” bar for this saw.

Bought this saw mid-2022 to replace my old 025. The salesman recommended this one over the 271 so it could handle a longer blade (I mentioned I wanted a 20in saw for larger trees). Worked like a dream the first time I used it. Have used it twice since and there is no power behind it. Cutting hardwood takes 3x as long with the 291 than it ever did with the 025. Took it apart to clean any sawdust and found the bearing inside the chain sprocket/brake was completely gone and the plastic housing had melted. All that was left of the bearing were the cylindrical metal pieces of it. Very disappointed with the lack of craftsmanship in this chainsaw.

We heat the house with 2 wood stoves burning 6 to 7 cord each winter. I had a MS 290 for over 10 years and was very happy with it. I couldn't complain when it finally shot a piece of its piston out through the muffler. MS 290 is a discontinued model, and the local dealer said the MS 291 was the equivalent replacement. I had only put about 10 tanks of fuel through it when it stalled and wouldn't start. Since it was nearly new I didn't try to trouble shoot much myself and just took it back to the dealer. They told me the piston and cylinder were scored because of bad fuel and the parts to repair it would cost more than a new saw. I've been buying the most expensive highest octane gasoline for all the small engines I have from the same place for years and no other piece of equipment, even another chain saw, had this problem. The dealer also told me that since the problem was fuel related it was not covered under warranty. Very disappointed.
My 291 is still running great after two years of cutting my own firewood. I use a winter bar oil year around and do not have problems with bar oiling like many reviewers have. The chain oiler on this model is non adustable. The saw is simple to start if you know the proper steps first. Once this saw is broken in it will buzz right through large rounds with very good power. One thing I would suggest is to make sure its tuned to factory settings because mine did stall out when I first purchased it. I took it to a Stihl dealer and was told the factory settings were off and had them reset them to specs. Since the saw was tuned properly its been a fantastic saw for my use. For a homeowner saw its more than enough power.
Bought 1/10/2023 Ms 462R CM 25". So for $1500.00 I expect perfection. Bran-new I'm on the 3rd tank and the fuel cap has a lovely slow leak, the first day was cold out and saw rolled over on log it cracked top cover, and chain catch is chancy I can see that not lasting long. Wide open it's fast and strong, but don't let up on it or the aggressive chain will bite and this m-tron will bog out. Like it has some WIMP SAFETY built into it. Anything but wide open this saw is a gutless monster. The power is there but if chain is bit in and spikes are tight to log saw can't rip through if it is not full throttle. Great handling saw, all day worker. But got to be wide open. Little over priced. I feel it is $300-$400 over price.
I bought this chain saw a month ago to replace my 661 which is getting too heavy for me, I used the new 291 for less than 20 minutes and had the clutch seize up. The dealer fixed it, but the housing around it is now disformed. The dealer accused me of running it with the chain brake on, which I certainly did not, this isn't my first rodeo, that offended me to be honest. After taking it home from the repair and setting it in my shop, it's now leaking bar oil from the oiler port (Not fill cap). I really love Stihl products, and have run them my whole career, my company also uses nothing but Stihl products, but I'm disappointed this brand-new chain saw is a lemon, I requested a new saw from the dealer, they said they can't do that. I'm sure this saw is a 1 off, but now ... MoreI bought this chain saw a month ago to replace my 661 which is getting too heavy for me, I used the new 291 for less than 20 minutes and had the clutch seize up. I went in to the Warrior Alabama Ace Hardware to locate some galvanized pipe fittings for a well pump repair and had been eyeballing a stronger chainsaw than my present one. David Debondi the sales person showed me the various options on what i thought my wants could be met on the Stihl MS 291. No high pressure sales, just good information conveyed to me from this associate. Made the purchase and told him it was for my wife's upcoming birthday. She seemed pleased with the saw also, since she knows it goes a long way to keeping steady warmth in our home without the overuse of the heat pump that works well until it gets really cold outside. She did get more a appropriate birthday gift in-case y'all are concerned for her and her chainsaw. I have been using my Stihl chainsaw for several weeks now without any issues. It makes quick work of trees. I have burned about 5 tanks of gas, the first 3 tanks were the break in period so I took it easy as per owners manual. I find the chain very durable with little need for chain tightening (a major problem with a previous brand of saw.) I have processed about a chord of firewood and cut numerous trees on my property, all without the least bit of trouble.I also like the pre-mixed gas and oil. I do not normally buy pre mixed but I doubled the warranty (not that I'll need it) by buying it and the bar oil. The bar oil I find to be high quality also. It's hard to go wrong with Stihl. The only potential issue I had was the saw was not started before I left the ... MoreI have been using my Stihl chainsaw for several weeks now without any issues. I had a slight issue start the saw the first time but now I have no problems.
This was a heavily researched purchase. My boyfriend has had several subpar chainsaws over the past few years. A “good deal” here, an offer he “couldn’t refuse” etc…Well, After his last chainsaw went flying through the trees, down to the lake, and eventually ending up in the burn barrel, it was time to make “the purchase.”After holding back the laughter at seeing him finally at his breaking point with the last subpar no name brand chainsaw from a well known “superstore” he explained that unless he got equipment that wasn’t garbage he wouldn’t be maintaining our property and cutting firewood to keep us warm all winter. After initially trying keep the cost down somewhat, he was heading down the same subpar path, so, we upped the ante and decided on the best chainsaw ... MoreThis was a heavily researched purchase. After initially trying keep the cost down somewhat, he was heading down the same subpar path, so, we upped the ante and decided on the best chainsaw brand you can get…He decided on the MS 291. After a few bumps with it flooding a little too easy, and vowing to return it, (my PTSD was starting to flare and i prayed that this wasn’t going to fly down the hill into the lake) he was able to see why this was happening and get it started and it runs perfectly. He is so happy with this purchase. I have a feeling we are going to need to plant some trees because he isn’t going to want to stop using this chainsaw! Thank you Stihl. I think I might get my she shed after all! And yes, we know. Chainsaws do not belong in a burn barrel. Even if they aren’t a Stihl!
