Pros: Compact but surprisingly capable box for SOHO use. Easy upgrade & migration from an older DS214. Good security features (well it does have a flavour of Linux as its core). Plenty of help in the Synology community forum should you need it (direct to Synology Support also but slower). Software tools for most needs easily installed. Really like Drive - the equivalent of your own DropBox.Cons: The MailPlus server is capable although the 5 included accounts is a bit stingy but OK for a small office. The licence fee for additional accounts if you need them is exhorbitant, especially considering that open source software (postfix & dovecot) are what powers it.

Pros: It's so much faster than my 7 year old NAS . An absolute joy to set up. This NAS requires no screwdriver or any tool other than your fingers. The drives click into their holders which have a very robust feeling front handle which you then use to slot into the NAS. Oh yes, and it matches the other devices (black) under my TV. The rear has SATA & USB3 which I haven't utilised... yet, still having fun watching how responsive it is . If you are looking for a NAS upgrade (I had a DS211J before!) that can handle higher resolution movie files (it's does transcoding on the fly too!) then I would thoroughly recommend this.Cons: No bad points at all....really!

Very happy with it. Yes it's a tiny bit noisy but it's enough to let me know it's working away and nothing more. The apps take a little while to get your head round and there are some configuration settings that need to be figured out and set right for it to work well, but there seems to be enough apps and for free to feel you've got real value for money and there's no better feeling than to know everything is in one place and safe now. I have no idea how it compares to all the other devices that I looked at also, but the fact is I'm really happy with this and would therefore whole heartedly recommend it.

I already had a 2-bay NAS but it was getting old (6 years) and the features weren't that great for more modern requirements. Taking a look around I had been considering the Synology NAS boxes for a year or two. Anyway, impending need for new capacity in the old NAS forced my hand somewhat and I bought the DS218+ with the new drives (2x4TB Seagate Ironwolf units) and it gives me 3.5TB usable. The OS and management system works really well and there are many packages you can install to add additional functionality. My main uses are backup (automatically set), media source for for various devices and home streaming, backup for my Office365 data (as not automatically backed up by MS in case you didn't know) and, lastly, general storage drives for various members of the ... MoreI already had a 2-bay NAS but it was getting old (6 years) and the features weren't that great for more modern requirements. It is a little pricier than some of the competition but I've no complaints with the VALUE provided.Recommended.
Pros: Offers auto, duplicated backup. Just what I wanted for a 3 computer home set up. Recommended by a computer magazine.Cons: Operating instructions mainly unintelligible to non-geeks. I have yet to arrange just a simple system back up. Far too complex for many home users. Lockdown restrictions prevent me obtaining proessional help.Online video help infrequent and aimed at complex business use. No fault of retailer.
Pros: Pretty straightforward to set up, software easy to use and supplied apps seem pretty comprehensive.Cons: Noise produced from hard disk activity is much more noticeable than in a PC for example. A little annoying if you are in a small room, but I think this is common with most NAS devices. Fan noise is similar to a standard PC. From my limited experience, there are other makes that might be better value for money, particularly if you are not demanding much of the NAS.
Pros: As a NAS it performs it main purpose, which is to provide file storage in RAID 1.Cons: I spent a long time investigating both Synology and Qnap for home use. The Synology is supposed to be easier to use and while my use is fairly simple, the IOS (for an iPad and two iPhones) is straight forward but the Windows PC side is a headache and not the simplicity I had hoped for as I have other users at home to consider. Currently I have to mount several drives in Windows 7 (music, photos, videos plus others of which one needs to be encrypted with a password required on access.) Hopefully the Synology forum may help, otherwise I may have to look at Qnap again; an expensive option I prefer not to have to consider. One minor point, as iPhones default to use the HEIC ... MorePros: As a NAS it performs it main purpose, which is to provide file storage in RAID 1.Cons: I spent a long time investigating both Synology and Qnap for home use. Pros: Really great NAS and very customisable. Acts as a VPN sever, media server, CCTV server(IP cameras) can sync it with phones you name it. Just works. Lots to learn with it though! Would use BO. UK again for sure. Delivery was super fast and they were the cheapest by a good few quid.Cons: Perhaps needs a bit of basic instruction on its native RAID and basic setup for a none techy user which is not myself but could see how it might be confusing to some folks.
Setting it up was difficult with no instructions except what you get when you go online. Don't buy it unless you have a lot of time to spend on learning about NAS. The software that comes with it isn't as good as advertised. Once set up, it works fine doing what its meant to do. Terminology is too computer based jargon, without immediate help from the software: you have to browse the internet for that. If your uploading and you stop half way then you lose it.
I wanted to upgrade on a couple of older NAS drives i had, to take advantage of higher capacity and better trans-coding of 4k material. I looked at a few Synology drives, eventually deciding on this one for it's 4k support. I was not disappointed. The drive unit came nicely presented and packaged well with super easy setup instructions. I purchased 2 x drives to fit inside the NAS, and loading them in took all of 2 seconds. Once powered up the NAS began to set itself up, the web based interface was very easy to understand, with plenty of powerful tools, should i ever require them. I also found the Synology proprietary apps like DS Video were available on my TV, so i did not need anything further to watch 4k content, as the NAS perfectly streamed high bit rate ... MoreI wanted to upgrade on a couple of older NAS drives i had, to take advantage of higher capacity and better trans-coding of 4k material. It's relatively quiet - in comparison to my older NAS. Overall very happy with this product.
