The Pine Forest Canine Recipe with Venison & Legumes is the first product I bought from Taste of the Wild. Mishka is a 9 year old Chihuahua/Poodle mix, she is an extremely picky eater. But it was different when it came to TOTW. As soon as I place her bowl down she starts munching and devouring her kibble. For Mishka, this flavored kibble tends to make her hungry, which is a good thing. Mishka is known to be a picky eater, but not anymore after trying Taste of the Wild.

We have been feeding Pine Forest Recipe for several years. Our German Shepherds love it, stay active and lean and have normal stools. I do switch to the Salmon recipe occasionally as I like to give them different protein sources. They eat that recipe just as well with all the same attributes. Great ingredients with an affordable price.

I love taste of the wild products as it is the only food my picky pup will eat without toppers. Or, so I thought until I tried Pine Forest. Even the few occasions I have to mix Taste of the Wild dog food with something....warm water normally does the trick. The Pine Forest flavor however, my dog will barely touch. I have tried the warm water trick along with other flavor powders, supplements, etc. Just trying to get through this bag so I can take her back to the "High Prarie" which she absolutely loves.

Good choice for my food allergy puppy
4 August 2024

I have tried quite a few different high-quality and vet recommended foods for my 8 month old lab/terrier mix 40 lb puppy who came from a rescue. She had undoubtedly lived outside for her life before coming to me and was quite itchy. We tried several medicated baths, which helped, but the vet was convinced it was a food allergy. Of course, she recommended everything with corn, soy, wheat, pork, etc. I was determined to find a unique or limited protein food without grain or potatoes. This food smells good - my big puppy was sticking her nose in the bag to get to it. She eats it readily and her poops are fairly solid. But the most important benefit - no more itching and scratching and chewing!!! Not every food is for every dog, but this one certainly worked for us.

Great for Chicken Allergies!
11 March 2024

My dog is over 2 years into eating this food and he still loves it! He is super allergic to Chicken and finding a food with absolutely no chicken meal or fat is tough, especially at a reasonable price, but he absolutely loves this food! It's a bargain compared to the Nutro, Hill's and Royal Canin foods. It's also done wonders for his coat! In the 20+ bags he's eaten the quality is the same great product every time too.

Inconsistent?

First off, I do think this is a good kibble for most dogs, good ingredients and good balanced nutritional value. However, some bags bought in different locations seem to be very different quality. I have two Siberian Husky sisters, one is healthy and will eat anything, the other recently has Addison's disease and will eat practically nothing. However, she did start to eat this brand and flavor and have since been giving to her.She has slowly eaten some of the last couple of bags bought here on Chewy (her Addison's drastically reduced her appetite). The issue I have is I am currently taking care of a friend's dog for a few days. He gave me a bag of her food. Out of curiosity, I offered my dog with Addison's a sample of my friend's dog food and she ate it without hesitation. Then I offered her the TOTW Venison I had from Chewy and she refused. I did this test over and over again with same results. I asked my friend what food he gave me for his dog and he said it was TOTW Venison. His TOTW Venison is darker, mine is lighter. He said he bought his bag from a local store nearby.I don't know if it is a different batch, my bag is old and expired, they changed the ingredients or what. But she will eat TOTW Venison from one bag but not the other. Both foods are stored in an airtight bin meant for dog food. There are no other variables to change the taste. It is an inconsistent batch.

Loved the flavor options but fell short on perform

I loved the flavor options and listed ingredients, all seemed like healthy stuff my mom would feed me which attracted me to this food for my dog. I didn’t like that the whole line is grain free. I feed my dogs rice and even many recommend giving dogs rice and chicken for upset stomach, grains are good and my dog doesn’t have a grain allergy so I hated that the line completely excluded grains. Honestly, although I loved the ingredients and my dog enjoyed various flavors the quality was crap. My dog was underweight on this food and he is mindful of self regulating his eating so trying to feed him more portions wasn’t helpful as he didn’t eat the extra even of various flavor choices he just ate a cup twice a day not the extra. I switched to purina pro plan sport 26/16 and he gained weight and has more energy and enjoys that food as well. I don’t need to feed him extra he gained weight and muscle and has more energy on pro plan sport. I wanted to like this food as it was recommended by online sources but my vet recommended pro plan series and I selected sport 26/16 even though they have 30/20 option for working dogs. He is doing way better on pro plan and we get more bang for our buck with the amount of food and most important my dog does better on that food. He often had semi soft stools on TOTW. I think this food is more to make owners happy over actually meeting a dog’s needs.

One Loves, One Doesn’t

So I bought this because I heard it has a great nutritional value for dogs especially in the protein department. I was a little nervous to buy because we’ve never bought venison for them before. I was right to be so because it took a little effort to have Max and Lexy try it. So far it’s only Max who prefers it while Lexy would only eat it if my mother fed it to her, if not she won’t eat it, at least not until she gets hungry and forces herself to. That’s not my complaint however, the quality of the food is obviously superb and she obviously just doesn’t prefer. However, it can be a little too hard for them to chew on. They don’t have any teeth trouble but you can see how much of a struggle it can be for them to bite down on it and the high cracking sounds don’t ... MoreSo I bought this because I heard it has a great nutritional value for dogs especially in the protein department. If your dog eats venison then this is the way to go, careful for those whose dogs have sensitive teeth though.

My 6yr old great dane/pitbull mix has ALWAYS had awful allergies. Constant vet visits, bowel issues, HORRIBLE diarrhea, vomiting, hair loss, itchy skin and at his lowest he was 85lbs. We tried shots and pills and prescription dog food, so so much money!! Nothing helped. Until I switched him to this dog food. Now he has hair on his belly! Has normal bowels and no vomiting! He's not all red and itchy and is a healthy, solid 135lbs. My poor baby suffered for 4 years, bc no vet could figure out what was wrong or what could help......I'm so thankful for this dog food, and I know Bowser is too!

This got my dog excited to eat again.
22 January 2022

We recently discovered within the last 4-5 months that our dog is allergic to both beef and chicken, which has made finding a food he could have difficult, and the poor thing was beyond miserable (he was so itchy that his fur was falling out, and his skin was so red it looked painful, he'd rip his ears open from scratching them so badly, just a whole host of issues). I was at a loss and was looking for anything besides switching to a prescription food, we originally tried the salmon recipe from taste of the wild as our dog loved a salmon recipe from a different brand, but it was almost like pulling teeth to get him to eat it. He didn't enjoy it at all, so we tried the venison in hopes that even if it's a temporary food till we find something else he likes that he'd ... MoreWe recently discovered within the last 4-5 months that our dog is allergic to both beef and chicken, which has made finding a food he could have difficult, and the poor thing was beyond miserable (he was so itchy that his fur was falling out, and his skin was so red it looked painful, he'd rip his ears open from scratching them so badly, just a whole host of issues). I have never seen my dog more excited to eat in the whole time we've owned him. Each meal time is full of wagging tails and excited whines because he actually WANTS to eat. He still has some issues (which isn't from this food, it's from an old food which was mixed in to help him transfer over easier which has chicken in it), but his fur has started to finally grow back, he's not AS itchy (still kind of is), his skin isn't red as often and if it is it's not even a fraction of what it used to be. Overall this was a huge change and has made a huge impact for our dog.
