Super slim and excellent picture quality - it feels like you're right there! Tedious set up though - it kept sending me in loops, endless checking for updates and difficulties with authenticating email log in. Ended up getting frustrated and coming back the next day which strangely fixed all the gremlins

The TCL 98C735 is an excellent TV. At 98" the screen is a great alternative to a home cinema projector and the image quality leagues above anything a projector can offer. In fact the image quality is so good, it's on par with far more expensive LED TVs. HDR10+ and Dolby Vision are both supported and look amazing. Gaming is incredible on it. It does have a couple of quirks however. The instruction manual provides minimal information about setup and picture modes. Perhaps surprisingly, and what may be reflected in lower scoring reviews of this TV, TCL chooses to default Dolby Vision 4K content (such as Disney+) to using Dolby Vision IQ mode; this results in the "purist" video quality for original films at 24hz with no motion smoothing whatsoever. I expect this is quite jarring for many used to Motionflow or equivalent frame interpolation modes. 24 frames per second is noticeably stuttery and not something I'd have given a second thought to before trying Dolby Vision IQ. That said, it's simple enough to switch to another mode such as Dolby Vision Bright which does allow "Motion Clarity" to be enabled and judder reduction set 0-10. It should also be noted, all picture mode settings are saved just for the specific video resolution mode being displayed at any instance; e.g. a picture mode setting for 4K HDR will not be applied to HD streams. I tend to only use 'Movie' picture mode with Motion Clarity on and judder reduction set to anything between 5-9. It can be annoying there's no shortcut for various picture modes on the remote itself; instead you will need to press settings>picture>picture mode to change modes - a bit annoying when going between movies and sport. The TV only comes with the Netflix app out of the box and this app will randomly crash until it is updated via the Google Play Store. All other apps (Disney+ etc) need to be installed after activating Google TV. The home menu can chug a bit at power up even with a fast ethernet internet connection as all thumbnails/apps load, but you can change the power on setting to not be the home page. Another quirk, or bug more likely, is an inability to change the sound output source when the unit is outputting via an eARC compatible AV receiver. For instance, if the TV is outputting via an AV receiver and then you turn the AV receiver off, even in 'auto' output mode it does not seem capable of automatically switching back to inbuilt speakers without powering the TV off. I've also noticed issues with video output from Apple TV. Any Apple TV Dolby Vision content appears to have random juddering even with Motion Clarity on. Setting the "Match Frame Rate" option on the Apple TV solves the juddering but then has audio sync issues, which appear to have been a long standing problem for Apple TV. The system is heavy, ~60kg, and at least two people are needed for wall mounting. The VESA hole pattern is a somewhat odd 850 x 400mm and suitable brackets can be difficult to find (if using PLB101XL brackets it needs the arm extensions mounted inverted to the instructions to fit the hole pattern, ie arm extension with holes goes at the bottom). Overall though, this is a fantastic TV and an easy choice if tossing up between a giant LED TV vs projector (such as the Sony XW5000ES).

GREAT FEATURES
27 August 2020

The image of this tv is very good, bring was is on the bright side with the TV defaults but is. Decent color accuracy and better image than other TVs on the same price range. Black screens has lot of white bleeding specially when brightness is high. The Android OS is not as responsive than other brand but its acceptable. Gaming has some minor ghosting. Overall, I would buy it again, especially if it's discounted.

Love it. Was a little hesitant to buy at first as I was unsure of the brand. Since owning it I have put to rest any concerns I have. The picture quality is great. The interface is easy. IMAX enhanced footage is incredible.

Not bad for the price.

It's an ok tv. I picked it up for a ripper price in the black Friday sales so no complaints on the tv at all. Could be a bit brighter. Note that it doesn't support the Foxtel app despite the TCL website claiming it does. Google play store states that this product is not supported for your device.

Quality TV with great value

Bought it with Black Friday deal - originally i have placed order of Hisense 100-inch with the same price one day before Black Friday, then found this one released the next day, so I cancelled the Hisense order and bought this one. The reason was it's about 40kg lighter than Hisense TV based on the specs, and it's 2021 version. Still, it's pretty heavy 90+kg in package and 60+kg net. I had wall mounted installation with 2-3 friends' help. I am pretty happy with the TV, it's bright, sharp image with Onkyo sound system embedded, much better than a 4K projector - don't have to worry about running cable along the roof and ceiling mount installation. I know it's Andriod TV, don't need Google Chromecast any more. I bought this TV on release at the Black Friday Sales at over 50% of the RRP which they honored the day after the sale at ended given issues with the website when I tried to buy it the night before. I must admit I was a little nervous buying a TCL however thus far no issues. It is great TV for my cinema area and can be used for gaming as well. I wouldnt pay full RRP ($9,999) for this product but suspect price will fall quite quickly given the number of large TV coming into the market shortly - so look for the bonueses.

Unbelievably laggy
3 September 2022

Bought this 98inch tv on sale, it has a great picture but the Android smart system is so laggy that its almost unusable. I tried Apple tv which is better but the picture gets a annoying flicker every so often. Not good quality and I can't recommend.

Sharp, Crystal clear and smooth picture - I had to turn of the "Auto adjust brightness" feature because it made it too dark at times, but once that was off, WOW: Bright, Vibrant colours (better than I expected), and amazing detail. Gaming is so smooth with the 120hz and I have NEVER seen my desktop computer look so sharp and detailed. Amazing TV. Highly recommend
