I really love this grill. I used to have a full size Traeger, and I found that even with the cover, it was hard to keep it dry enough to not run into issues. And since I don't have space in my garage for a larger one, I set my sights on the portable Ranger. It has not disappointed me, and I've lost about 10 pounds in the month since I got it. i love using it so much, that I regularly grill chicken, shrimp, elk, bison, etc. No more frozen pizzas and sandwiches for dinner. It is pretty heavy, but I don't mind carrying it in and out of the garage. I run an extension cord out into my driveway, which also has convenient doors right from the kitchen, so it works well. Camping, tailgating...as long as you have the right power source setup, this thing will get the job done.I find that it's extremely simple to use this grill. You could not engineer a more simple electronic grilling device. It is easy to clean, the pellets burn at a reasonably slow rate, and the flavors are just epic. I highly recommend pairing this grill with the traeger brand seasonings. I love them. I also recommend the drip pan liners, as they are a lot easier to clean up than aluminum foil, which tends to burn at high temperatures in this grill.I haven't had any issues whatsoever, and I find keeping it stored in the garage, and carrying outside when needed is a really convenient arrangement for me. I would not recommend keeping it inside your house, unless you want the house to smell like barbecue all the time. Just remember to let the grill to go through its cool down cycle before powering down, and always give yourself plenty of time to let the grill cool off before you pick it up and carry it.

I’ve purchased grillgrates and will attempt smoking and reverse searing steak as this is my specialty and we’ll see if I can toss my little Weber Q this week. Slick gadget, but prepare to have your heart broken with tough brisket and beef roasts until you get more experience with this little rocket.

I use a cover made for the grill and also another larger grill cover that covers the Ranger and the small table I got from Amazon. Keep Hickory pellets in hopper and they stayed dry through (now two) Tennessee winters which are notoriously wet. Can't say enough good things about it. Add some handles and blue tooth on Ranger v2.

For use at an off-grid cabin, to be able to run on generater and battery power, with the ability to cook a whole small chicken, I reviewed scores of 'reviews' and comparisons and posted specifications. Why do all of these list the cooking area but no mention of the height of the cooking space. Even Traeger customer service couldn't tell me by phone. We have lots of retailers in our area and I finally found one with this model in stock. The height of the cooking area with the lid closed is 5 inches. This is just enough room to roast a whole small chicken if you bring your tape measure when shopping - I found about a quarter of them are just under that.I've used a larger Traeger for over ten years and this current model is improved over that one, with less smoke on ... MoreFor use at an off-grid cabin, to be able to run on generater and battery power, with the ability to cook a whole small chicken, I reviewed scores of 'reviews' and comparisons and posted specifications. Wandered into the Traeger display at the State Fair of Texas, where I was greeted by the nice folks from Treager. I explained that with a Weber grill and offset stick smokers I didn't need a pellet grill but just wanted to have a look at the rubs and sauces on display. So we talked about other shared interests and just as we were ready to leave I noticed the Ranger on a side table.Zack explained that it was portable, which meant I could use it at home and at the hunting cabin and that it could even be run with a 12 volt inverter, off grid. Well, this was a game changer! Well, this was a game changer! My wife and I left and talked about the Ranger over a corny dog and beer and concluded that the Ranger would be ideal for cooking on our covered porch on the nights that the weather was not so good and the convenience of not having to build a fire to cook a meal. Needless to say we went back. The Ranger was delivered a few days later and we cooked venison fajitas on it that night. The ease of getting it fired up and the set and forget temperature control is the easy button for outdoor cooking. Because we use our Traeger in two locations, a suitable cart was needed at the cabin, so I built the Ranger it's own dedicated workstation. Which was christened this last weekend with chicken wings.Could not be happier with the product and service from Traeger and the Ranger fits perfectly in my outdoor cooking arsenal!

Miracle Portable Smoker

We sold our house and set out on the road in an RV. I left behind my $6,000 stick smoker and searched for something to satisfy my obsession to smoke meat, on the road. While skeptical, I took a chance on this Traeger Ranger. My expectations were low but I was desperate. This thing is a beast. No pellet smoker is ever going to replicate a stick smoker. But this little hero comes close. We’ve smoked everything from ribs, pork butts, turkeys, ducks, chickens, Cornish hens, standing prime rib roasts, and steaks on it. We’ve seared steaks, fish, sausages, and scallops. If it walked on two legs or swam we cooked it on this unit. The results were always outstanding. My First Traeger - Small and Mighty

Was a gift and out of the gate, I have learned to love this grill. Portable, small in stature but large in capability. For a family of four, there hasn't been really anything that we've not been able to cook. But with all things there could be some improvements. First, for the love of the BBQ gods can we put handles on this thing. It is a heavy grill to be considered portable and handles, while increasing the footprint, would be a nice addition. This was an obvious one that the designers left off. Second, the latches. The latch opposite the pellet box/fire box gets extremely hot and I have taken skin off inadvertently touch that thing. You will need gloves if you cook steak or burgers or something that preheats to 450. It cleans easily especially if you get the foil liners specifically made for the grease bucket and pan. Probably will graduate to a larger grill at some point but sitting this on a heavy duty cart so far has been all I've needed. Great job Traeger. Can't wait to see if you take some design cues and come out with the Ranger 2.0.

I have a toddler so it is really hard to find the time to things like this especially repairs. While they e-mailed me an instruction video on how to replace the part I would like to point out while this video was helpful it was not even the same model as mine so I had to take more time to find written instructions step by step guide with pictures of the Ranger model. Ok fine so I did that and was able to replace the part. Guess what? To anyone who might read this I still got the same error Er1. So I am wondering if the RTD was even faulty or something else entirely. I am still on hold for customer support right now. But right now I am feeling like I might as well gone to Vegas and put $450.00 in the slot machines instead of buying this grill because I feel like I threw my money away at this point. To those who had better luck with the Ranger I am jealous I am unfortunately on team do not buy the Ranger grill unless you want to be filled with disappointment. I am probably going to return it but reading the return policy I noticed the policy said I would have to pay for the shipping, and so even then returning it I am still paying money just to see if I even get a refund. Like I am really sad about this whole situation. I have always wanted to learn how to smoke meats since my dad died and now I feel like maybe I should just forget about it.

Smoking em up

Bought this as a portable smoker I could take camping and things. It's not exactly portable because it doesn't have any type of handles and it can be heavy as well when loaded with pellets. Besides that it cooks good and easy to use. Just set temp and go. I've only used traeger pellets and they burn fine from what I can tell. Nice smoke flavors. You do have to clean it like any other wood fire grill it builds oils. This is normal and anyone complaining about that doesn't clean BBQ equipment after buying it. With some trimming I was able to fit 2 racks of ribs. Works great for me

That unit turned out to be a nightmare. And the negative reviews on here are a testament to tat failure. Luckily for me and those of you reading this will benefit from my experience. When talking with support and adjusting the motor speed the representative let it slip that tgey we’re working on a total redesign. After ruining many pieces of meat When the road show returned I returned my unit to Costco and purchased the new updated and fixed unit. The controls are different and operate a digital display, sold with a cover and power converter to operate from your car this unit is really a go anywhere grill. After a test of operation with a tritip seasoned with dry rub it proved to be good solid up engineered product. Basically the same unith with some additional features in the controls. Fir the test I ran the unit at the lowest temperature “215”and for 3 hours the init operated at between “200” and 229 degrees. It did not run away light its predecessor . The control are now digital andseem to have fixed the runaway temperature issues. There is plenty of space on the grill to cook everything for two people and enough room for 8 Ny steaks or two large tritips. Its perfect for my needs and it sits in the side shelf of my larger bbq. Niw. Why did I not give it 5 stars? Although they have fixed the temperature problem ls of the past. The new controller has introduced a new issue and exposes a fundamental problem in Treager itself. Previously they knew the original unit had problems and worked to fix the issue by changing the controller. Problem number one arrives when you start the updated unit. The instructions tell you to push two buttons on the unit simultaneously. After more than ten attempts to get the auger to go into “pri“ prime to display on screen I gave up. I manually primed the burner bowl and watched the auger advance the pellets until they reached the bowl. Any ony that know a treager knows you cook with the too down however their operating instructions show pictures of the process and the last picture is always the grill open with the food loaded for cooking. The instructions never say now close the too and cook. The control's have buttons you push but they do not correspond to any information on the screen. Example pushing the ignition button doesn’t show the ignition button is active. The prime sequence doesn’t function or appear on screen. This unit will not operate it the top is open as the temp probe sticking up into the bbq and without the reflection of the top your system will runaway and overheat the stove. The initial start up book is very poorly written. Considering it is poorly written in English makes me wonder what if the other languages in the book were translated from the English version. Overall to summarize the unit hold’s temperature, you cand use a timer, the probe works well. The control work but there no indication in screen if sime functionality. not sure how tgat gets by the management.
