I love this smoker. I have been wanting a Traeger for such a long time, but haven't been able to get one as I was in a condo for five years. This was the first thing that I ordered once I moved into my house. Dove right in and cooked a pork shoulder for my first meal and was extremely happy with the results and the way the grill performed. The only reason this is getting four stars was because the grill arrived, it was damaged from shipping and had some popped welds in the grease trough that I couldn't confirm were because of the shipping or because the metal wasn't properly heat relieved post welding. It does not deliver on the temps being consistent. Tech support just reads from the script and then has you do a video call. New grill set to 165 and TC reads 180 and probe reads 190. Of course I got my thermo pro and my fluke ir to tell me the real temp of 195. So I figured call the support and was with them for over 2 hours. It seems to me that the TC should regulate the auger and fans so the temp stays close to 165 or any temp you set it to. Could not get a solid answer from tech just the run around about being +/- 15 degrees. So you are telling me if I set this $1500 grill ...Ā MoreThe grill was a Father's day present 2022. Could not get a solid answer from tech just the run around about being +/- 15 degrees. So you are telling me if I set this $1500 grill to 165 that 150 to 190 is the swing. Yes it is. So why not just use a $200 grill or a fire pit. Smoke is decent but not worth $1500. If the customer calls up and stays online for over 2 hours you need to fix it and not just keep reading from the script. Obviously there is an issue since I can set the temp I want on my $200 grill and not have a 30 degree swing. I have grilled and use temp to monitor and make sure my food is done at the temp I choose. you can do this on the Traeger as long as you babysit it all day. This is not a good grill at all. I know you will give me the cookie cutter response and thank me for my comments and tell me you are here to help. Ok come to my house and pickup this grill and give me my money back. I dont have 2 or 3 hours a day to keep calling tech support on a new grill that does not do what you advertise it to do. Hold temp, smoke and set it and forget it. I would love to forget all about Traeger grills.

Great Smoker
8 July 2022

Got this smoker when it was on sale and it has been great so far. I've made steaks, burgers and a brisket on it so far. It has done great with each of those.Added the shelf on the front and got the Traeger cover for it to keep the outside looking good since I don't have a porch or anything to hide it under.Did break the plastic piece that lets you set the brake on one of the smaller wheels when setting it up but that was my own fault, just be careful when standing it up if you flipped it upside down to put the legs on.Like the ability to change out the liners quickly underneath the grill and in the grease trap for quick and easy cleanup.Setup and control with the app was very easy. MEAT PROBE AND CUSTOMER SERVICE SUCK
13 December 2022

I had an issue with the meat probe on a brand new grill a couple of months after I purchased the grill. The probe will shoot way high after it hits 100 degrees. I contacted Traeger and told me to calibrate it in an ice bath. I put the probe in an ice bath and it reads 23-24 degrees so we offset it by 8 degrees. I go to make burgers the next day and it is reading 180 degrees and I know my burgers are not burnt because I just put them on there. I check it with a different probe and its showing 120 and slowly climbing. I contact Traeger again and their first guy disconnects so I am doing it again. The second guy is giving me the run around about needing to calibrate the probe again and they dont trust third party probes. He even sends me an article about it. He claims he checked the probed over wifi and it is working fine. In the last week I have made smoked salmon, turkey, and burgers and you cannot trust this probe because it goes so high. All this over a $20 item. Absolutely embarrassing for the company. 1-2 hours dealing with this now over a $20 item. Just send me a new probe guys. They refused. So pathetic. I will buy my own probe and never buy a traeger grill again nor will I recommend it to anybody. Awful service and product clearly. The worst part is they don't seem to care if they are willing to argue over a broken $20 probe on a $1600 grill.

Not perfect, but gets the job done
20 February 2023

The delivery/assembly process was great and seamless via TotalTech, and the grill itself looks awesome. The WiFire took a little time to set up but overall works fine. The grilling area is very roomy and it held three racks of ribs with a lot of room to spare for my first cook. The pellet sensor does go off as indicated, but it will sense a low pellet level in the hopper even though there are a lot of pellets hanging around the sides that have not dropped down to where the pellets enter the grill; I have to manually shake the pellets loose to level the layers and 'tell' the sensor that there are in fact enough pellets in the hopper. Otherwise, this grill works great! Temperatures appear to be accurate and the cooking process seems foolproof enough. Highly recommend!

I’ve had my grill now for about a year and a half. In that time, I had to replace the power pack(I had owned it for about 2 months), the whole hopper assembly…. Because the clean out door had rusted and I couldn’t open it… and now, not for the first time, I was using the grill at 180 for 20 minutes, then bumped it up to 450, and I get an alert just a bit later that it was over temp. It had started on fire. This seems to happen, even when brand new, many times when I go 450 or higher. Most of the time, it’s controllable. I’m able to get the fire out, shut it down, do a quick clean up, restart, and go again. This time, however, the whole thing lit up. It bubbled and peeled the paint due to the heat. I did a total clean about 4-5 hours of runtime prior. Using their degreaser and all. So it was very clean. Due to this continually happening to me, I contacted support. I sent them pictures of the burnt up areas, and then they asked if I had cleaned it. I had 4-5 hours of runtime earlier. They asked if I used a degreaser. I said yes, I use your degreaser. They then asked if I had removed the rear cover and cleaned in there. I had not. I never saw it in the cleaning guide they have, so I never thought about it. And what do ya know, they determined that the fire was caused by build up of grease in the downdraft area. What a shocker. You mean the spot I didn’t realize needed to be cleaned since it’s not in the cleaning guide, happens to be exactly where you determined the fire was based on my pictures after the fact. What a coincidence! Doesn’t matter that the bulk of the fire was more in the belly of the grill, side to side, and front to back. But they said it was definitely there, the one spot I didn’t clean. No way it was anything else. So I popped off the rear cover, and besides all of the peeled paint, there was almost nothing in there. It was very clean. I haven’t put a ton of hours on this, so it didn’t really surprise me that it wasn’t ā€œcaked full of greaseā€ as they claimed it was because that is, without a doubt, how and where the fire was. Just another company who makes a product, but only backs it to a point. I’ll probably have to strip it all down, sand and paint it, so that it doesn’t start to rust on me now that a bunch of the paint is gone/bubbled up. If you want a good smoker with great support/customer service, I highly suggest you look elsewhere. This is supposed to be the best of the best…..obviously, it is not. Too bad I didn’t know that before I spent all this money.

Traeger Ironwood D2 885 with WiFire Controller Wood Pellet Grill - BLACK FRIDAY SPECIAL
21 December 2022

Extremely easy to put together, the only reason you need 2 people is that it's so heavy, everything very easy to understand. Owners manual helped with how to season the grill.Cooked our first meal on it shortly after and couldn't fault it. The only slight challenge is that it did struggle to get up to temp (it was around -2 outside when cooking) and then maintain it but in warmer, normal BBQ season that will not be a problem. The burgers came out really well, even though the wood pellets are flavoured wood, we cooked at a normal BBQ temp (not low and slow smoking) and did not taste the wood pellet flavour, this was something I had questions about for people who don't want that smokiness to their normal BBQ food, they came out great! So for anyone who has doubts ...Ā MoreExtremely easy to put together, the only reason you need 2 people is that it's so heavy, everything very easy to understand. Worst unit I’ve ever owned.
20 September 2022

I’ve owned my Ironwood 885 for about a year and a half now. Had I known that a wood fired ā€œgrillā€ wouldn’t even sear a protein, I never would have bought it. I’ve placed the rack in its lowest position and set the temp to 500, the highest it would go and at most I get a grey looking meat. No Maillard reaction whatsoever on any protein I cook. I even went as far as to buy GrillGrates searing plates as they said they amplify the temperature upwards of 150 degrees hotter than the actual grill temperature. Even those don’t get any hotter than 530 degrees. The only useful thing is being able to set a temperature and walk away. It has no smoke flavor whatsoever. Traeger pellets have literally 0 flavor compared to other brands such as Lumberjack, which actually helps when I use them. In conjunction with a smoke tube though, because even at 180 degrees and super smoke on, there is no smoke flavor. The closest I’ve been able to get to a Smokey flavor was by putting pellets and wood chips in a smoke tube and cooking a brisket unwrapped for 13 hours, refilling the smoke tube up to 3x during that cook. And that was just a hint of smoky flavor.Their marketing team is genius as they make you think this is the greatest machine there is. And at one point I believe Traeger used to be respected. But with so many other options out there now, and then seeming like they just don’t care once they get your money, I’ve decided to sell my ironwood and go back to a stick burner offset. That’s smoky flavor. I even had to go as far as buying a Weber kettle 22ā€ AFTER I bought my ironwood because the ironwood wouldn’t grill at all. It just bakes at a really hot temp. These ā€œgrillsā€ are convection ovens. Not grills. And should not be marketed as a grill. It’s quite misleading.
