This is an amazing pellet smoker. First, it is very heavy. Be sure you can manage the weight. Second, the shell on this thing is double-walled, so you don't get heat soak, but it holds heat like no one's business. if you leave the lid alone, it will stay rock solid. The super smoke function for the first couple hours does a really good job, but it does eat up pellets pretty quickly. Just make sure you have a good supply of pellets available. The pellet feeder is solid, I haven't had any issues with pellets sticking on the sides. The pellet chute is right at the bottom of the hopper, so it really clears out the unused pellets. I had an issue with the smoker at first cause I had the store assemble it for me and they put the bottom shelf on backwards. It was a major pain to get that switched since it is VERY early on in the build, but I managed. Without it being on correctly, the pellet chute is basically impossible to get to unless you go in from the back. A typical 5 gallon bucket with the screw on lids JUST fits under the smoker on the shelf. I also highly recommend the flip-up front shelf. I got the XL version and it has worked like a dream. Get one of these, you won't be disappointed.

With the super smoke on it is out of this word with good smoke production. The controller is definitely the best in the business and the integrated app has options most don't have. The WIFI was very easy to set up and was working within 3 minutes. The lights that come on when the lid is opened are fantastic. Most brands have them in the interior of the grill and are worthless after 2 cooks. These lights are not to the lid on the exterior of the barrel and do not get covered in smoke. The grill when running is very quiet. I have had other brands where I am laying in bed and can hear the blower motor and auger running and were pretty loud. The pop and lock rail system is very awesome. I have bought the front shelf, Basket, drink holder and 2 roll holder/dispensers, One for paper towel and one for butcher paper. I have found the cooking surface to be very even with temp. I have cooked almost everything I always cook and everything has awesome bark and very good smoke flavor. I cooked a brisket overnight and it used about a half hopper of pellets. The lighted pellet hopper and pellet sensor tells the percentage of pellets left and has a low pellet alarm as well. Cleaning after cooking is a breeze, The porcelain grates are easy to clean with a hot cloth and wiped off. After a 12 hour cook very little ash. The fire grate comes out and you can vacuum out under it. I like the pellet auger drops the pellets down into the burn grate so you will never get back burn.

Brand new, could not reach set temp . . .

The temp plummeted after 350, going down to 250, 245, 240 . . . etc, never reaching the set 450.It’s been said that pellet grills take all the work out of grilling, that you can make your settings and leave it for the duration of the recipe you select; but I felt that if I didn’t watch this grill every second, it might start a fire or explode, because of the wild behavior I described. However, I also learned that smoking meat and/or veggies isn’t the same as grilling; so this is really just a smoker, not really a griller.I was able to reach a live Traeger technician very promptly, who asked for a cellphone video AFTER the temperature had gone down and all the wild behavior had subsided. I did not know how to attach the video for him to view via online chat, so a live face-to-face phonecall would have been better. I decided not to take it apart to troubleshoot since it was “supposedly brand new.”I say “supposedly brand new” because I took advantage of Home Depot’s free assembly, but there were multiple scratches on it - like an out-of-the-box floor model. I pointed the blemishes out to customer service, but said that I would still take the grill (since the blemishes were scratches versus dents).I had to return to Home Depot’s customer service because no power cord or owner’s manual had been provided.I am returning this grill with no plan to exchange or replace. I am now terrified of smokers after this experience. Back to real fire grilling I go.

Caster Wheels Fall Off
23 July 2024

bought the grill about a month ago. I assembled the grill and started rolling it into my garage. The surface of my driveway cement has a slight rough spot where the surface of the driveway has chipped away. When I wheeled it across that spot, the two caster wheels fell off. The wheels come attached to the legs so I know it wasn’t an assembly error. I contacted Traeger and the support agent was friendly and was very helpful…kind of.She was happy to send me a new set of wheels. I told the person that I was pretty sure the problem was with the way the wheels connected to the legs and as the wheels came attached to the legs, I think I need new legs not just the wheels. The agent was positive that the new wheels would solve the problem and sent me the new wheels. I recite new wheels and attached them to the legs. I moved the wheels carefully back and forth mimicking what had happened previously. I could easily pull the wheels off.So I called Traeger again. New agent, but just as friendly as the first. This agent had me take a short video showing how the wheels would easily come out of the legs. He agreed the problem was with the legs and offered to send me two new legs and some free rub for the inconvenience. New legs arrived today (no free rub…so much for my inconvenience) and I moved the wheel slightly back and forth as I had done previously, and the caster wheel came off. At this point I’m inclined to think there might be a design problem. The smoker legs showed up today. However, one has the same problem as the others. It is a design flaw. There’s a small ring around the peg of the caster wheel that slips into a very small grove in the leg’s sleeve. If the wheel is moved back and forth enough, the wheel easily slips out of the grove and falls off.The problem will occur if the wheels are on rough ground and catch on something while you’re pushing it. The force of trying to push the grill over the catch is enough to cause that small ring to slip out of the groove resulting in the wheel coming off. I’m still excited to use the smoker. I just need to remember that pushing the smoker over any rough spot in the cement may cause the wheels to fall off. This is my fourth smoker. My last smoker was the Ironwood 885. Never a problem. It wheeled over the same rough spot without difficulty. Part of me thinks that maybe I was better off sticking with that smoker.

There is a QR code in the instructions you can use to watch a video of the install so that might have helped. Overall, I can tell this is a quality smoker and definitely a major upgrade from my old Louisiana Grill. It's solid and really well insulated. I had it running at 400 degrees yesterday and the bottom (just above the shelf) wasn't even hot to the touch. The wifi integration was easy to set up and the app works well. I just started smoking a pork butt this morning and the grill is holding the temp I set very consistently. So far I'm very pleased and hoping to get many years of enjoyment and quality meals out of this.

Really Disappointed.

So disappointed in this grill. I've looked at in the store it for over a year and finally pulled the trigger and wish I hadn't. As a last resort I finally decided to pull apart my brand new grill to check the wifi antenna and, sure enough, it wasn't connected to the board. After repairing that I tried to fire it up to try a cook. Set it for 350 and after 80 min it only reached 225 degrees so I gave up and put it to shutdown mode. After cooking in my oven and eating, I restarted it and set it for 500 to see what would happen. After an hour it just barely made it to 400, so I reset it at 400 to see if it would at least hold and.....nope. Settled at 340 and came back up to 360 and hovered between there and 345. Waited an hour on the phone again and gave up.After reading the reviews a bit closer on this thing I see this seems to be a common enough problem and they sure aren't making them like the last 2 Traegers I've owned. I'm not sticking around to shotgun troubleshoot and deal with this like others have. It's going back to the store while the getting is good and I still can.Sorry Traeger, you lost a lifelong customer.

SO DISAPPOINTED IN MY IRONWOOD AND TRAEGER GRILLS

SO DISAPPOINTED IN MY IRONWOOD AND TRAEGER GRILLS. We purchased our Ironwood on July 20, 2024 as the perfect addition to our new deck. Within hours/days of our first cook, we began experiencing MASSIVE temperature swings (Traeger informs us 25-degrees is within range). Our $1,800 Ironwood grill swings over 100-degrees. We have high temp errors, can not hit our set temperature and frequently experience auto shut down or just complete shutdown mid-cook. These massive temp swings may have even caused damage to the unit. I have invested 2.5 hours on the phone with Traeger trying to resolve the issues. This includes video chats, photos of the warning screens and an excessive amount of time on the phone. Traeger... you're a massive company. I purchased one of your flagship grills. I would think that last thing you want me to do is start tearing this thing apart and installing parts. The attached photos and videos should provide enough evidence that this grill needs to go back to R&D and you need to send me a new grill. Hopefully one that works.

Very happy with my purchase of Ironwood
24 September 2024

I just bought this grill a few weeks ago and can’t believe how great it is. And, I am also well pleased that I chose the Ironwood. I was concerned that I should buy the XL, but the smaller one has plenty of cooking surface.I had a vertical electric smoker for a couple of years and produce some good results, but it was not easy to use. So I decided to get rid of it and my weber grill and replace them with the Traeger. Assembly took me most of the day, but I am somewhat feeble and 70 years old, so not a benchmark. And, I am also well pleased that I chose the Ironwood. I was concerned that I should buy the XL, but the smaller one has plenty of cooking surface.I had a vertical electric smoker for a couple of years and produce some good results, but it was not easy to use. Once the grill was completely assembled, the casters would fall out when the grill was moved. They are pinned into place so they cannot be simply reinserted. Disappointing, yes. I contacted customer service by text message and had a truly remarkable experience. First, I was put on video feed to show what the problem was; within a few minutes, they had new legs ordered and shipped. It was a lesson in what customer service should be. I can’t say enough about that.I’ve cooked a brisket, country ribs, pork loin, and pork chops already. What took me so long to get a pellet smoker? This thing is outstanding and has my strongest recommendation.

FROM SAMS CLUBKale saladFruit traySoooooo let's start out by the Smoker looks sleek and updated! But when we got it it literally took me 4 hours to try and set up the wifire feature. For an item that was built and came out in 2023 I believe, it ONLY uses 2.4GHZ and the wifi antenna absolutely sucks. After trying and trying and having to buy a wifi extender (which I didn't need) it finally connected to a different internet name that I had to create. Very disappointed in the setup and the wifi antenna. Should not have taken that long to set up the wifire. Now let's talk about the temperature. I am cooking at 225 right now, and it went up all way to 250. Very disappointed in the setup and the wifi antenna. Should not have taken that long to set up the wifire. Now let's talk about the temperature. I am cooking at 225 right now, and it went up all way to 250. I read, and I understand that it "works" like an oven, and the temperatures would fluctuate here and there and that there is a +/-15 degrees. But when I have temps that reach 25 even sometimes 30 degrees above that really messes with the cooking and speed. Yes i am using BRAND NEW pellets, the bag is indoors in the traeger air tight containers and it still fluctuates at ridiculous temps. I have a friend who has a pit Boss and we set it to 200 and it was stable the WHOLE 6 hours of cooking. For the price tag of this Smoker I would have expected better temp regulations and better wifi signal and setup. Also the app. While the app is simple it is pretty laggy and glitches. When I change the temp of the probe, it doesn't sync properly. I have to close the app and reopen it for it to be updated. I also can't seem to get the cook now feature to work which is what sold me and my wife on it. Just press it in the recipe you are wanting to cook and forget it. I have yet to get it to work properly. One more thing...the pellet sensor. Talk about a terrible design. So let's start off by saying the pellets dispense through a little hole in the hopper. Now picture the sensor right above that area. So as the pellets dispense it is reading the pellets level of where they are being dispensed which will always tell me I am low when the corners and other three sides are full of pellets. So now I have to go make sure I am good on pellets. This item should read the WHOLE HOPPER not where they are dispensing because the phone goes off notifying me I am low but when I move the pellets around, I am back to 50-60% full on the sensor. While I have had good food come out I have had to baby it just because of the temps and that is not what I signed up for when I bought the NOT CHEAP ELECTRIC SMOKER.I will try to add photos of the pellet hopper.

Worst Grill & Customer Support Ever. Don't Buy...
25 June 2024

Same issues everyone else is posting on here... Purchased the new Ironwood XL and it cannot maintain consistent temperature jumping 60 degrees over what it's set at or dropping temperature altogether then turning off mid cook ruining the meal. Firmware is updated and grill is cleaned after every use. It's been in twice for warranty repair in the 6 months I've owned it and still is not working. Traeger customer support is HORRIBLE and good luck getting through to anyone unless you have hours to wait on hold. If you select the call back option it's days or weeks later if you get a call back at all. They will spend an hour running you through the cookie cutter list of trouble shooting questions each rep is given at the end of which they finally will tell you the grill ... MoreSame issues everyone else is posting on here... Worst grill I've ever used and it was $2,000, total waste of money. I'm retuning mine and going with another brand altogether. I can't wait to see the robotic response from Traeger to this review where they refuse to acknowledge there are major quality issues with their grills now a days and their customer service is non-existent. Don't waste your money or be fooled in to buying a Traeger...
