I bought this smoker pro 780 last June in 2022 and have loved it since. I'm disappointed with the quality on a few things. The lid rod that holds the lid up is built flimsy as the lid has crashed backwards 3 times now . Due to that the lid is bent and has a larger than acceptable gap. With the gap being to big the lid wont seal properly and burnt my brand new insulated blanket on the weekend while cooking a turkey for Easter. I will say that the Traeger warranty team was all over it and since Saturday when I started dealing with them it has all been resolved and new parts are being sent out. I would of given it a 5 star if it were not for this lid issue but I'm extremely grateful for them backing up what they sell. I definitely recommend this product to anyone on ... MoreI bought this smoker pro 780 last June in 2022 and have loved it since. I'm disappointed with the quality on a few things. I bought this one because our old We’ll loved Traeger got knocked over and damaged. The new one was purchased in 2019 from Home Depot and I still have it and use it only occasionally now. There are two issues that make this grill not as good as our old one that got damaged. That old grill made absolutely the best grilled chicken on the planet. When the fat from the chicken dripped off on to the foil lined drip pan, it would bathe the chicken in wet steam when it it hit the drip pan which keeps the chicken moist and crisps up the skin perfectly. As this occurred, more smoke would develop and exhaust out of the chimney. The issue with this one is that the overwhelmingly vast majority of smoke always comes out of the outlet where the grease trap is. The chimney has virtually no smoke when it operates which is completely different from our older one! I called Traeger to discuss this issue and was actually told it wasn’t a problem! The chicken on the new one is nowhere near as good as the old one and imparts little to no smoke flavor. In addition, the drip bucket doesn’t catch near the same amount of grease as our old one. In fact, I have only had to empty the drip bucket once since I’ve had it and I have no idea why it is so radically different than the old one. The second problem is that the old drip pan showed virtually no signs of rusting over a lot of years of use while the new one shows tons of rust every time I change the foil out that protects the pan. Both were always kept in my garage and only rolled out when I wanted to use it. Overall, the new one doesn’t perform nearly as well as the old one. And with all Traegers, they never get hot enough to produce a decent sear even though the temperature read out says it gets to 500. Simply put, the one I have won’t hardly sear anything and I’m very disappointed because my older one produced way better cooking results.

I did my first turkey this year using the Traeger turkey brining and pellet kit ($27). Talk about a simple and easy preparation. I am used to a hole day of basting and covering/uncovering the turkeys in the oven of the past. We brined the turkey for almost 24 hours and then as the instructions on the packet said patted it dry, rubbed it down with a little oil and put the Traeger rub on it. We put it in a disposable aluminum pan and into the Traeger. The only other things we did was insert the temp problem and after a period of smoking, turned up the temp. This was on a 32 and below temperature day and still the bird was cooked to perfection. It has wonderful flavor and aroma. It beat out the oven roasted turkey by a mile. Got this as an early christmas gift from the wife. Picked it up Dec. 8th. Used it that day, worked great. Tried to start it up christmas eve - blinking power switch. Doesn't turn on, completely useless. Customer service was great the first go around. Video called me to trouble shoot - sent me a new power brick, harness and switch. Got it today, replaced, still nothing. Waited 25ish minutes for the customer service rep to pick up and make me go through the same song and dance - tried to tell me it was the power cord. I convinced her to video call me again that night so I can show her the power cord hooked up to a multimeter showing correct voltage. Theyre now going to send me a new control panel. Really disappointing because i've wanted one for so long.

General pros and cons
5 March 2023

I've had my 780 grill for about 10 months and use it a minimum of 3 times per week. Previously I had a Traeger Bronson for 5 years and wanted to upgrade. I have to admit the 780 is bigger than I need, and at that time I should have purchased the 575, but here are my findings after cooking on the 780 over 120 times so far.The right side and across the front area of the grill are every large areas of cold spots. The biscuit test proved to me that these areas are not prime for maintaining high enough temps. I don't know if the firepot is just not adequate enough to heat the entire area or what might be the answer. Maybe relocating the firepot closer to the right side so that heat spreads across the grill better, to the chimney on the left?I don't use the wifi option ... MoreI've had my 780 grill for about 10 months and use it a minimum of 3 times per week. The biscuit test proved to me that these areas are not prime for maintaining high enough temps. I don't know if the firepot is just not adequate enough to heat the entire area or what might be the answer. Maybe relocating the firepot closer to the right side so that heat spreads across the grill better, to the chimney on the left?I don't use the wifi option so I can't comment on that. It's just not an important upgrade for me.I believe it's because of the large interior space, but none-the-less I've had to increase the temp by anywhere from 25-50 degrees and/or increase the cook times in order to get the same results for many of my routine recipes. The firepot itself collects ash more readily than my previous Traeger, instead of blowing the ash into the cavity below the drip tray, causing me to vacuum it out far more often, and causing the grill to heat more slowly, when the firepot is so full of ash, after only short a short time prior to the previous vacuuming.Because of the large amount of air cavity, it uses far more pellets than my previous Traeger in order to keep that much area at, or close to, the set temp, even though I have an insulation blanket on it year round.Where the grease flows down into the trough is a much bigger pain in the neck to clean out than the Gen 1 Traegers.Although it's not a big deal, I'm not a fan of the on/off switch, then setting the temp, plus then pushing the ignite button. The gen 1 Traeger's are easier and faster to start than the Gen 2, in my opinion. All that said, I'm going to purchase a Pro 22 in the Spring when they run their first seasonal sale, that way the savings will pay for a front tray and part of the cost of a cover. I'll also purchase an insulation blanket because I grill a lot during the cold months and it's a great addition for Winter cooking.I'm going back to a smaller grill, because it suits my needs better, and I'm going back to a Gen 1 grill because I like to controller system better for me personally. Some of my findings are strictly personal, and may be no problem for others, but it never hurts for a company like Traeger to get constructive feedback, no matter what it might be.I would not buy another brand of pellet grill because I truly feel Traeger is a quality company that produces some great quality items. I hope my comments help some of you who are on the fence and are also helpful to Traeger.

Great Unit but not worthy of a Pro name
27 November 2022

Purchased a week ago and have used it 4 out of 5 days. Used it two days leading up to Thanksgiving and it is a decent unit. But let’s cut past the details because all of Traeger products are thoughtfully well laid out and work well for what was intended. The reason for two stars, and I bordered on a single star, was the fact they all this a Pro model and there isn’t a single external shelf and the lack of pellet sensor really rips on the consumer having to shell out more money in order to step it up to a level compatible to its name. It’s done now. I bought the shelf and the sensor, but don’t tout something as Pro when it’s a base unit that requires add ons. Happy with the quality of this grill and the customer service I received after damaging the lid. Traeger replaced the lid for me no questions asked. I am a little dissappointed in the temp control. The salesman told me the unit would remain within 5 degrees of set point and that definitely not accurate. I have trouble sometimes even getting the temp to 500, particularly in moderate wind and cool outside temps. Once it is at set temp, it definitely fluctuates more than 5 but not more than 10. Also, I commented in the shelf section that the shelf needs to be redesigned, or you need to make an adapter and send it out to all of your customers that have a shelf. It is too narrow and the handle gets in the way for plates, trays, bowls that you need to sit on the shelf. My lid has fallen down twice, once it hit the back of my head and the other time it slammed down on a glass platter because the handle stuck out too far and was too low and hit the platter. IMO, you can't move the handle higher on the door because you already have a burn hazard with the current location when you lift the lid. I have burnt my wrist twice now lifting the lid. You need to actually move the handle lower to reduce/eliminate the burn hazard.

This traeger is absolutely a hunk of garbage. 2 days after purchase the auger broke. Treager unwilling to help, I returned it to Home Depot and got a new one. It has been a constant battle with this grill. It is horrible at maintaining ambient temperatures (even being covered with Treagers overpriced temperature retaining padded cover). The pellet bowl will constantly overfill and cause the traeger to shut off showing "LEF". If it doesn't shut off the massive amount of pellets will smolder and cause a nasty yellow smoke show ruining whatever food is inside, followed by a flash over causing the grill to be filled with giant flames and temperatures well over 500 degrees (yes, I only use Traeger brand pellets and yes I clean out the pellet bowl constantly, which in ... MoreThis traeger is absolutely a hunk of garbage. 2 days after purchase the auger broke. If it doesn't shut off the massive amount of pellets will smolder and cause a nasty yellow smoke show ruining whatever food is inside, followed by a flash over causing the grill to be filled with giant flames and temperatures well over 500 degrees (yes, I only use Traeger brand pellets and yes I clean out the pellet bowl constantly, which in itself is a pain in the butt). This grill has ruined many special events for me and has destroyed a massive amount of fine meats that I have put a lot of effort and hard work into. I am deeply unsatisfied with this Traeger. Long ago I was passed down a Traeger grill that was my fathers for many years and it was a great product that continued to work for me for many years as well. These new products are not only overpriced, but are cheaply made and extremely disappointing. DO NOT buy this product or support this brand.I know this sounds like one of those typical annoying product rants that you read and dismiss but you will be better off passing on this product and going with a different brand. I am very ashamed with this Traeger and this brands overall cheaply made, overpriced products. Truly saddened that I will cannot recommend or stand behind this brand any longer.

Traeger is excellent but I got a bad one!
29 July 2022

This is my second Traeger. I have been a huge fan of Traeger!I loved the box it came in! No dents and had some fun when assembling. Traeger makes it fun and interactive! The grill works great! I have cooked just about everything. Why the one star? I take great pride in my Traeger. I purchased this new one for the Wi-Fi capabilities and the larger option. I only use Traeger products for cleaning, pellets and foil liners.I donated my 2 year old Traeger to a senior neighbor that loves when I used my Traeger but was unable to buy one. It was an easy reason to upgrade. My new Traeger's finish is disappointing. I have only used it a couple of times since I bought it on July 1st 2022. The paint is already chipping! Very awesome but I do wish I got the IronWood

The grill is awesome and easy to use. It does kind of need some accessories added to really make it feel complete - like the grill cover, the pellet sensor accessory and some lavalock tape to seal off the main door better.I think this 'grill/smoker' is really more accurately described as an outdoor convection oven. Don't get me wrong, it is really awesome for this purpose! I pretty much always try to use this instead of my indoor oven now.You won't get direct flame heat as you would in a typical grill, due to the flame shield and drip pan design. This is usually not an issue if you know what you're doing because you can always just get a good sear on a cast iron pan on the stove.Know that most smokers have this same issue by design, and I now understand why ... MoreThe grill is awesome and easy to use. This is usually not an issue if you know what you're doing because you can always just get a good sear on a cast iron pan on the stove.Know that most smokers have this same issue by design, and I now understand why some of my neighbors have a basic cheap propane grill in their backyard next to their Traeger. As for the smoking ability, the chimney as you can see is up high. This does really reduce the smoke's time to interact with the food. The smoke will rise and then just go up and out the chimney quite quickly. On the brightside, if you want to do any standard baking without adding a smoke flavor, you can certainly do that with this unit. You can definitely still get good smoke flavor too, but you'll either have to go lower and slower than other smokers, or add a smoke tube to the grill. You'll notice that the IronWood model does not have this smoke chimney. Instead, that unit vents the smoke out of the bottom, rear of the grill. This allows the smoke to build up inside of the grill and spend more time interacting with the food before it finds its way out the bottom vent. Between that and the IronWood having 'supersmoke' mode I do wish I spent the extra money for the Iron Wood model just for some extra smoking oomph.I think this unit would have a lot more smoke power with a lower vent. I wonder I could just make the vent on this thing lower by just turning that chimney upside down lol.I may try that one day - seems like the Raiden hat over the chimney would serve as a catcher for any solid that may try to come out if it was upside down. All this is not to say I haven't smoked some really awesome meals on this thing! It is so easy to use, the app and included meat probe are excellent and I haven't screwed up a single meal I've made on this thing. If I had to choose to have only one cooking appliance in my backyard, I would definitely choose a Traeger over a standard propane grill or flattop.
