Dropped partition table and data

Price-wise, I regret returning it since the sale price made it a great deal, but I need reliability.

I bought this one as a replacement for a 1 TB Verbatim drive that I have had for 5 years. The prior one still works fine but I wanted the faster transfer speed and larger size for my iMAC Time Machine backups. I found the older one could be slowing down my MAC. SO far, this unit is fine. I am not sure the transfer speed are as fast as advertised since I have not done any testing to be sure. However, it did back up about 450 mgs of data in about 3-4 hours. I am unsure of the actual time since I left it to run overnight. Installation was plug and play, hit a few keys and off it goes. (But that is also a nice function of iMACs- you do not have to do much work to get them to run properly. Sorry, you Windows users! ;-) I had no problems with the older one so I am ... MoreI bought this one as a replacement for a 1 TB Verbatim drive that I have had for 5 years. John's review of Verbatim USB 3.0 Desktop 2TB HDD
9 May 2015

Pros: Reliable, quiet stackable drive storage.Cons: The USB Connection for the drive is non standard. So it won't be possible to just switch the lead with your old Verbatim drives - which is a little annoying. The USB cable is also very short. I use these to store movies for watching on a console, so the switch between PC and console is requires either relocating the drives or a USB extension.

No problems with this unit yet
27 December 2011

Purchased this unit after a Hitachi 1TB drive packed it in, using for desktop backup, drive started grinding. No chance of getting back Data. Used for 14 months and do not think much of servicability. Will never buy Hitachi again. Verbatim drive has good reviews thoughout USA so paid the extra. Here's hoping it lasts. Seems to be an excellent product and has great software.

Not as shown; different design, likely to overheat
29 May 2017

I don't want to stand an external hard drive vertically because it could easily fall over. I ordered the Verbatim Store N Save Desktop Hard Drive, USB 3.0, 2 TB, model 97580, because the picture shows the unit with ventilation slots along one edge, which would let the unit lie flat while allowing good air circulation through the edge slots. I received model 97580 according to the box it came in, but the edges are solid and all the ventilation slots are on the bottom as the unit lies flat. There are mini-pads at the corners, but they raise the drive only about 1/8 inch, obviously allowing very little air circulation. I connected everything but didn't do anything with the drive since I was working on some documents - it just sat there, switched on. If the drive would heat up just turned on but idle, I think it would probably overheat in actual use. I don't trust it, so I'm returning it. There’s also a problem with the on/off switch. It's difficult to shut off, and after being shut down the drive turns on again by itself when the computer is restarted.

Walmart specifying wrong description
8 March 2013

Hey Walmart, there is a difference between a 'portable' hard drive and an 'external (desktop)' hard drive. The box on this item clearly states External Desktop. An External or Desktop HD is not built for portability and will have it's own power cord. A portable HD usually costs a little more and gets its power from the USB and has more protection around the cover.I did return this product to a Walmart store. But walmart.com needs to make separate categories for these two device types.

This was a gift for my x-ray addicted husband and he is in 7th heaven! He can't believe how much extra content he can download. He had 75 games that needed to be done added and he got them all done and so fast! This is a great value for the size of memory it gives. Good pricing and it was delivered in time! Get one!
