I read a few of the reviews stating that the grill wouldn't keep hot and Charlie's that up to either inexperienced users or quality of charcoal etc.. Boy was I disappointed to find out they were totally right. Two-zone cooking can only hold stable (ish) if the exhaust vent is positioned directly over your coal bed and all vents are open wide. This leads to the issue of putting just enough charcoal in as required to reach your target temp which is impossible most of the time. But even then, the grill just doesn't get proper airflow as it isn't directly contacting the coal bed, it's flowing over the top of it. If you're doing direct grilling, even with a full chimney of coal the temps just seem to drop steadily after an initial spike. Odd stuff for sure. Its simply a super poor design having the intakes on the sides now that I think about it, but I really did want the color and the easy carry option that the premium comes with. I should have just gotten myself a Jumbo Joe, which I think I'll do soon. Luckily my Go Anywhere is here to stay and never lets me down.. This one is just going to look pretty in the garage or maybe go to my folks' place to use when I'm there, but I doubt the frustration I've had with it this far will make me want to break it out over there either. This has to be one of the only Weber products I've been disappointed with.

My version has the round four hole vents on the bottom and top. Not on the side for the higher priced model with carry handle. I added a thermometer to mine. This little grill is the best. Quick and easy. Maintains about 300 degrees for indirect cooking. Over the top of the coals you can sear or char to you hearts content. Put your coal pile along the edge 2 on bottom three or four on top. Then light about 5 along the bottom. The pile will gradually ignite the additional coals providing as much cooking time as needed. Add some hickory on top once the fire is lit and smoke is added. I cannot believe I did not buy one of these before. Close the vents and the fire is off. I have some tongs to tap the bottom tray to remove ash then lift the bottom grate. Dump the ash. ... MoreMy version has the round four hole vents on the bottom and top. I bought a Smokey Joe to go with my Performer charcoal and Genesis gas grills. Love Webers, really don't consider other brands. I often use the Smokey Joe when I just have a couple burgers of chicken breasts, rather than fire up the larger grills. It works beautifully!I use the Performer a great deal, and when I close the damper, there is a cover to prevent burns. There is no such cover on the Smokey Joe; I was ready to shut it down after grilling, and grabbed the damper with my thumb and forefinger. Yes, my stupidity, but I attribute it a bit to always having one on my Performer. Second degree burns on both digits.I called Weber customer Support and explained that it is unconscionable to omit this from the Smokey Joes, considering it is included in full-size ... MoreI bought a Smokey Joe to go with my Performer charcoal and Genesis gas grills. I am not litigious, but someone else might find cause to file for it. CS said there was no such cover, but would mail out a full-size. Fine, I figured I could fit it somehow to the Joe. After a month's delay, I today received in the mail a damper cover that fits perfectly! Not sure if they engineered one in the meantime, but now the risk of burns has been eliminated.I urge all who own a Smokey Joe to request Item 63048. Weber should add these to every new grill going out of the factory.

I owned one of these for more than 20 years. It was given to me in good used condition. I used it nearly every night. I passed it along to a good friend back in the 90s and he used it nearly every day. Hurricane Opal blew through Alabama and knocked down one of my buddy's pecan trees. He said the tree fell on the grill and sent the lid flying! The lid ended up about a hundred feet from the tree and the rest of the grill; which only suffered a broken leg. A few months later he gave me back the grill. I continued to use it - with the broken leg supported by a brick. A few years ago, I sold my home and moved to be with my girlfriend. While I was moving stuff the grill was stolen. The whole time I owned all of my Weber kettle grills, they have always stayed in the ... MoreI owned one of these for more than 20 years. The whole time I owned all of my Weber kettle grills, they have always stayed in the weather, unprotected. Never once has the finish chipped, faded or rusted. I bought the this little grill to complete my Weber kettle collection. There's a size for all reasons, and I have them all. It's all good.
This grill was bought specifically to use while camping, and I used it almost every day of a recent trip. Firstly, the assembly was easy, and initial quality seemed good. That impression quickly wore off when I attempted to cook 2 porterhouse steaks that fit perfectly on the 14" cooking grid. I used my Weber chimney to light the coals, and when the top ones were starting to get gray, I dumped the red hot coals and started to cook. I noted right away that the cooking grid didn't fit properly on the lip of the grill. If it was 1/4" more in diameter or the grill 1/4" less, it would have been better. I put on the lid and opened all the vents 100%. I would have expected to turn the 1" thick steaks after about 5 minutes, but when I did, I noted a real lack of heat, and ... MoreThis grill was bought specifically to use while camping, and I used it almost every day of a recent trip. I put on the lid and opened all the vents 100%. I would have expected to turn the 1" thick steaks after about 5 minutes, but when I did, I noted a real lack of heat, and the steaks hadn't seared at all. I also noted that the coals were no longer red. All told I needed to add a 2nd layer to get the coals closer to the cooking grid. I needed to fan the coals quite a bit in order to get the top layer to light, but once I did, I was able to put the cooking grid back on. My total cook time, including waiting for the additional charcoal (the K brand) to get up to temperature was almost 45 minutes. I experienced the same problem when cooking a split chicken and hamburgers. Since hot dogs only need a couple of minutes, those were OK until the coals were choked from not enough oxygen. I now regret buying this grill, and it's the first Weber product that I've been unhappy with. If it wasn't used, I would have boxed it up and sent it back.
About 15 years ago I received a Smokey Joe as a birthday gift. I was told that I'd never again need to buy another small grill that would rust out after a season or two. 15 years later, my Smokey Joe is going as strongly as the day I got it.If you're looking to get a small grill, do yourself a favour and get a Smokey Joe. It's often advertised for being good on the go for things like burgers, hotdogs, and smaller items, and with a bit of imagination, you can do a whole lot more with that little grill.I've successfully made day-long smoked pulled pork in my Smokey Joe, among other things. With the lid on, and with attention paid to the vents and amount/type of charcoal in it, the Smokey Joe lets you do a lot more than warm up some burgers. For anything grilling ... MoreAbout 15 years ago I received a Smokey Joe as a birthday gift. I've had this exact grill for over 20 years. Best charcoal grill I ever had. NEVER had a bad meal off it, cooks evenly...better than the regular Smokey Joe due to the lower vents being on the side instead of on the bottom. Another benefit of this design is the cook grate doesn't rust...mine has been in use for at least 22 years and I'm still cooking on the original grate. I've had to replace the charcoal grate a few times, but with the heat from the charcoal, that's to be expected...besides, the grates are inexpensive enough so no big deal. Please Weber, do not change anything about this little grill...you can't beat perfection. Those of you reading this, don't be afraid to buy this model. IMHO it's the best in its class.
This grill is the perfect size for my husband and I, and we knew we’d enjoy it. Only thing is, it is missing the manual, hardware, and handle for the lid and the lid itself has a small dent along the edge. We got the phone number and the information off the box and called to see if Weber can send us what we need, after going through all the questions and getting the info off the box, I thought, ok that’s it done, it asked for pictures of everything. Pictures of what? The parts and manual are not here, the dent is a small dent, our lid should have none. We are done, we did our part, submitted what I can, and now hoping that our parts come soon, can’t use it just yet. PS, we bought everything Weber to go with it, because we trust the name!
I'm not a Weber fan by no means, but.. Ya see, I buy "knockoff" grills and everybody and I mean EVERYBODY tries to copy Weber, some good, some not so good. I bought a such knockoff for a low price and that's what I got, a"cheap" knockoff grill. I knew going in, what to expect and with a few mods, I got a good grill. Now, for all you who like Weber but cheapin'd up and bought something that looks like a Weber, but doesn't cook like a Weber, STOP complaining. Shoulda Oughta bought a Weber to begin with. I'm tired you you cry babies !As for me, I'll stick with my cheap knockoff's and be happy with them, cause ya can always add mods..To all you Weber Fans, grill on !
This would have been my 3rd Smokey Joe. The first one was great, worked perfect, cooked like a mini kettle grill. Had it for many years until it finally wore out. After years of using a larger grill I decided to go back to a little weber since it was mostly just me. The second one was much inferior to my original, but ok for an occasional hamburger or two. It was stolen from my porch so my girlfriend got me a new one. Neither grate fits securely inside the bowl, both are smaller than the diameter of their placement to the point they rock and wont stay level or stable. This never happened in my prior 2 versions. Seems like some bean counter decided to make the grates/grills this bit smaller and save x-amount per unit. Whatever the case, overall I find it to be ... MoreThis would have been my 3rd Smokey Joe. Instability is the last thing I want in what I consider a tabletop grill. This thing is getting returned.

Weber Smokey Joe Charcoal BBQ
A smaller, more compact version of the original Weber Kettle, the Smokey Joe packs all the features of its bigger contemporary in a small, compact space. With nearly 1000cm2 of cooking space, the Smokey Joe might be small on footprint but is perfect for cooking for 2-3 adults and does so with ease. With the same porcelain enamel as the rest of the Weber Kettle range, cleaning and maintenance are easy and you can rest assured your grill will be protected from rust. An aluminium ash catcher sits underneath the Smokey Joe, allowing the fire to breathe, meaning you can keep grilling, all while knowing that your grill is cooking at its best potential.
