We have been purchasing Oxbow hay for our bunnies since 2020 and had no problems until last year. Now almost EVERY TIME we purchase thIs hay we end up taking it back not only is it NOT CRUNCHY, NOT GREEN, NOT CLEAN BUT IT ALSO SMELLS LIKE DRIED TOBACCO!!!!!! This is unacceptable OXBOW. If your crop is not up to par… DONT SELL IT!!! We spend tooooo much money for the quality to be as horrible as it has consistently been for almost a year now. Western Timothy hay is supposed to be bright green and crunchy like you advise it on your website in the photos. Rabbits need hay in order for their digestive system to function properly. Our bunnies refuse to eat or smell the hay that you are distributing to the vendors ie..PetSmart. It’s is horrible!!!!!!! Fix this issue ... MoreWe have been purchasing Oxbow hay for our bunnies since 2020 and had no problems until last year. 10 years ago, Oxbow was all we bought and we bought in 50 lbs boxes back then. We just adopted a bunny who loved the All Living Things timothy that we got temporarily while waiting to get our box of Oxbow. That hay looked like what Oxbow used to be. The box of Oxbow we got is green, but the strands are thin and scraggly, more grass than hay. The top layer in the box is full of short inch long pieces. Thankfully when I dig lower, there are longer chunks. We will see if our bunny warms up to it. But he is definitely not enthused.

I have 5 chinchillas and 2 habits and have gotten the 90oz. bags several times and it seemed fine, the chinchillas ate some but they seem to throw it around more, the rabbits ate about a handful a day.I finally decided that a 50lb box was too good of a value once you get over the initial shock of the cost, but it's almost as much as 9 of the 90oz bags that are $20 each.Well, I am not sure what's different but the hay in this big box is greener and smells like the fields and the chinchillas are eating all of it and the rabbits can't seem to get enough of it. Perhaps it's because it came directly from Oxbow rather than a bag that had been sitting on a shelf for who knows how long.It is a very big box so not an easy thing to store, but it's a heck of a lot ... MoreI have 5 chinchillas and 2 habits and have gotten the 90oz. bags several times and it seemed fine, the chinchillas ate some but they seem to throw it around more, the rabbits ate about a handful a day.I finally decided that a 50lb box was too good of a value once you get over the initial shock of the cost, but it's almost as much as 9 of the 90oz bags that are $20 each.Well, I am not sure what's different but the hay in this big box is greener and smells like the fields and the chinchillas are eating all of it and the rabbits can't seem to get enough of it. Although oxbow is meant to be the best hay for bunnies, I have found it to be very stalky and my bunnies don't like it. It's very expensive for what it is. I usually use the haybox club which is half the price and is soft. Look around before buying this. I won't be buying this again and il be sticking to the haybox. Dont know why Timothy hay varies so much in price. The box was very tightly packed which I usually find makes the hay on the damp side
We have bought Oxbow many times and has always been of good quality. This time the hay was very dry and the rabbit has no interest in eating. Color is pale and there is no smell. We are hoping the next time it is better. Thinking about exchanging it as it not useable.
Oxbow Western Timothy Hay (90 oz.) has definitely had quality issues for the last two years! The bag that I ordered recently was full of very hard yellow stalks of hay that looked not quite as yellow as wheat straw. There were bunches of short softer pieces of hay, less than 3 inches long, that looked like it had sifted from the haystack to the bottom of the barn floor and had been scooped up and mixed in the center of the bag. This hay is totally unacceptable! My guinea pig will not eat the hard yellow stalks. There are lots of long hard pale green stalks that he won't eat either. This is STRICTLY AN OXBOW ISSUE, NOT A PETCO ISSUE. I have been happy with all of the other Petco items I have ordered and the fast shipping on them.
Oxbow is the best brand. They understand what guinea pigs need. I have bought other hay, and sometimes the quality wasn't the best -- more dust than hay or no hay heads in an entire bag. Oxbow always gives you what you need, from stem, to hay head to leaf, to keep your piggies healthy -- even in the larger economy sizes. I have three piggies, and I by 25 lbs. It's the most economical, and I know that it keeps my piggies healthy and happily munching away.
Own two Guinea pigs (Taco and Rosie) and they love their Oxbow Timothy hay. I ordered online but we ran out before the package arrived so we bought a meadow/orchard hay blend. Our picky piggies could tell the difference right away and were only eating the choicest pieces, leaving much behind. The Timothy hay arrived and they dug right in, stuffing their snouts deep into the pile! They absolutely love it.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE: I've been buying Oxbow brand timothy hay for over 5 years for my 2 lop bunnies; it is the best I've found, until this recent order. I'll add that I know A LOT about hay because I also ride horses. I've been ordering online from Walmart for the last 6 months for my bunny-quality hay — and all has been great (good quality + fresh). The most recent bag contained lots of FESCUE HAY sprigs. I have never seen this in any Oxbow purchase before. In less than 48 hours, I've painfully removed fescue hay sprigs (hard stick-like) from my rabbits' eyes. As a result, they both have ulcers in their eyes AND it's cost me over $400 at my vet (in the last 2 days)! Most tragically, eye ulcers are extremely PAINFUL for animals. Extremely disappointed in Oxbow after ... MoreIMPORTANT MESSAGE: I've been buying Oxbow brand timothy hay for over 5 years for my 2 lop bunnies; it is the best I've found, until this recent order. Horrible quality. Guinea pigs, chinchillas and hamsters all haven’t touched it. Looks old, smells off and a significant amount of the box is dead and brown. A 25lb box is not exactly cheap and was supposed to feed my pets for the next month or longer, but now I’m certain it will all be going in the trash. I will be in contact about a refund or replacement box of better quality at the very least.
