We needed a solution to retain the amazing utility of our Honda Element tailgate. After buying the Backswing and installing our Holdup2 the length was completely comical. The tongue of the rack stuck out so far that it was like the bikes were floating way behind the car.I took drastic action; cut the pivot off the Holdup2’s tongue and welded it to the top of the Backswing’s receiver. Perfect. The tailgate glass opens and the bikes just clear the back of the car when open. The main functional problem I have with this thing is you can’t flip the pivot location side because the exhaust has burnt all the plastic caps off the pivot and whatever spacers have been installed in there.

Yes, the bikes float in space, but this thing is a beast. Contrary to the Mercedes Sprinter owner who couldn't open his right door all the way, I have no problem with my Ram 2500 right rear door opening. This thing has made taking the bikes on trips while still being able to get in our travel van "basement" without taking off the bikes. Great product. Would buy again.

I hope this review helps other Jeep owners looking for a bike transport solution other than the spare tire mounted variety. Video of final instal here: https://youtu.be/sPf1JruphCU I have been trying to figure out a good solution to attach my Yakima holdup 2 to my Jeep. The issue I have faced is I have added a 2.5in lift with 35in tires, so the spare is quite large. I tried hitch extenders, but they were wobbly and longer than needed. Also, the rack was always in the way when on. With this I was able to finally have access to my entire trunk while having bikes attached. Works great even with the holdup plus 2 attached (that’s 4 bikes) that can easily swing away. The handle to release and lock the backswing still rubs on the side of the spare slightly, but it’s more than workable. If my bike rack is up when I swing it open the door will not open far enough to open the glass, you must have the rack folded down to open the gate far enough to open the glass. If you were to find an extender that dropped down maybe just 2 inches more much of this would be easier, but i’m Very happy with the install and final result. Easy assembly, solid construction. This is a win for Yakima. The only thing I wish it has were some thick rubber protection on the safety clamps on both sides, it scratches and will rust before the rest of the product reaches the end of its life.

Ive used the Backswing with a cargo carrier and with a 4 bike 1-Up USA carrier, and it works great. I've had it installed for about a month now, no rust or material breakdown so far. Use a torque wrench on the locking hitch pin bolt. You'd be surprised how much force you actually need to tighten a bolt to 100 ft lbs. I can now pack lots of stuff behind my Jeep gate since I can swing everything out of the way. Only a couple of minor issues, and not necessarily faults of the Backswing:- You cannot open the gate all the way because the Backswing only swings out to 90 degrees. I wish it would open just a little farther than 90 degrees. This means that with the spare tire in the way, you cant open the gate all the way. not a show stopper, but if you needed to get ... MoreIve used the Backswing with a cargo carrier and with a 4 bike 1-Up USA carrier, and it works great. I wish it would open just a little farther than 90 degrees. This means that with the spare tire in the way, you cant open the gate all the way. not a show stopper, but if you needed to get something really wide in the back you will have issues. Full disclosure, my spare is a 35" tire, not a stock tire; your experience may vary. If it would swing to the left, it would be fully out of the way. Some competitors make different models that swing left or right, just fyi- the locking handle is a little hard to get to with my 35" spare on the back. My bumper is aftermarket, and has a high clearance hitch, so it moves the Backswing up pretty high (and close to the bottom/front edge of the spare tire). Not a deal breaker, but its a little tight to get my hand in there good enough to push with enough force to lock it down.- Minor, but annoying. The dust cap for the lock on the hitch pin is attached with a hard tether that will not let the dust cover stay put. It pops off every time you try to cover the lock with it. This isn't directly a problem with the Backswing, but man is it annoying to spend this much money and not be able to keep the dust cover on the lock.
Most of the components of the Backswing seemed very robust however one defect made my copy unusable. The hitch bolt could not be tightened down so either the bolt or the nut was not cut properly. To make matters worse the holes in the receiver for the hitch bolt were drilled eccentrically thus a standard hitch bolt could not be used rendering the product useless. Poor QC of this nature is just inexcusable for a product at this price.
I have now had the BackSwing extension for over a year.Out of the box, the U bolt used in the latching mechanism was much too loose, resulting in insufficient tension on the latch when secured. It was so loose that several times the latch would become undone while driving with an attached rack was loaded with bikes. This resulted in the “safety” being the only thing keeping the arm from swinging open with a loaded rack while driving. I subsequently adjusted the U bolt quite a bit to ensure a good amount of tension, which solved the problem. I thought I should note this all in this review because Yakima’s instructions make no mention of the importance of this adjustment, or that such an adjustment may be necessary. The other issue I have had with the extension is ... MoreI have now had the BackSwing extension for over a year.Out of the box, the U bolt used in the latching mechanism was much too loose, resulting in insufficient tension on the latch when secured. I thought I should note this all in this review because Yakima’s instructions make no mention of the importance of this adjustment, or that such an adjustment may be necessary. The other issue I have had with the extension is that the tolerance on the receiver is much too low, with a gap of 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch with a rack inserted. This results in my 1Up rack being canted when installed due to the location of its fixing mechanism. When in the upright position my rack has a definite lean to the left which at some point I may fix by shimming it. Racks like Yakima’s that use a through bolt should not have this problem, however. Regardless, I would expect a higher tolerance on the receiver. It seems Yakima is trying to address this by including a locking bolt on top of the receiver to tighten things down, but in my case this doesn’t solve my issue.
This is the second Backswing I purchased from Moosejaw. The first one was unusable do to defects in manufacturing and I gave a 1 star review. The box was pretty beat-up and as a result the outer latch has a ding in it. Obviously not Yakima or Moose fault. The product is well built and seems quite robust however has several flaws. In particular the hitch stabilization for both the vehicle and rack receiver don't work well. They only stop wobble in one plane thus the rack still wobbles. My solution was to add a hitch stabilizer (that I usually use on bike racks) that looks like a steel plate with two big U-bolts. This pretty much stopped all the wobble. The stabilizer bolt used for the rack receiver will cut into the racks hitch bar. So good bye to the threads on the ... MoreThis is the second Backswing I purchased from Moosejaw. So good bye to the threads on the end of the bolt and hello to rust on the racks hitch bar. This could easily be fixed by incorporating a shoe on the end of the bolt like the ones on C clamps. The hitch lock is a joke. I figure it would take about 3-5 seconds to knock it off with a hammer and chisel. It would be nice to have the option to swing out to the left as well as the right but for me this is not a deal breaker. Over all I find the product adequate for my needs and Moosejaw is excellent.
Pretty good accessory for accessing your SUV trunk or pickup tailgate when your hitch rack is loaded with bikes or other cargo. I originally was reticent to get the BackSwing due to Just_Ed's review regarding his 1-Up USA rack being tilted. This is possibly due to the anti-wobble device on the 1-Up, whch is a tightening ball in the upper left of the shank. Thankfully I did not have the same experience with my 1-Up. If Just_Ed's Yakima BackSwing did not have a quality control issue, then I suspect he has the 1-Up rack that can be used in both 1.25" and 2" receivers. In order to fit a 2" receiver, the additional adapter may create more room for the rack shank to shift in the receiver, leading to his tilted setup. My 1-Up USA rack is built strictly for 2" receivers and I did not have the same problem.Just_Ed is correct in stating that the Yakima receiver is too large. Even with both anti-wobble devices tightened on the 1-Up rack and the Yakima, I noticed I could still move the rack left and right a couple of degrees. There was no up/down motion, however.Note that you need a few different odd-sized sockets/wrenches to install the BackSwing. First, you need a 24mm socket and torque wrench to install the BackSwing to the vehicle hitch. Then you need a 17mm open-ended wrench to install the spring-loaded safety knob. Finally, the anti-wobble bolt/nut requires what appears to be a 19mm or 20mm wrench (the 18mm wrench I had was too small, so I had to use a Crescent wrench). Yakima implies you need to torque the bolts using an open-ended torque wrench, but that is a highly specialized tool. Most torque wrenches use sockets, and the need for a 24mm socket was certainly unexpected. The wrench sizes were not indicated anywhere in the installation instructions. Do better, Yakima!
I've had my Yakima BackSwing on my F150 for over 2 years and love it. I used to hate trying to get in/out of my camper before with just a drop down bike rack or box rack. Now it's a breeze. We use our camper a lot and the BackSwing has improved our adventures and daily use considerably. The BackSwing is tough, easy to use, sturdy. I have several Yakima products and their customer service has always been GREAT whenever I've made any inquiries. I love this product. It's short and compact enough so it doesn't add much to the overall length of my truck and is rock solid.
This is a great peice of kit. It allows easy access to the rear of my troopcarrier. The only issue I have is that it swings to the right side and can put my bikes out into the traffic potentially. However it is easy to operate and has it's own anti rattle devices.Well priced compared to other similar products.
