It is a great guitar. I chose it over the taylor 214 and 210e because it was just as good of quality but at a much better price. Comes with a case too. I really think it's a great workhorse guitar that you can use in the studio, stage, practice, etc. Uses two AA batteries instead of the 9 volt, which is a plus. It has an onboard tuner and easy-to-use electronics. Play one! You'll like it. Excellent value for an all-solid guitar.

All solid wood, great price - it's a Yamaha!

Bought mine on clearance. I'd gone to the store to play it several times. The $300 discount sealed the deal. I've owned Yamaha acoustics before and I don't doubt the quality. All Yamaha's I have played have quality and attention to detail that far surpass the price tag. I'm not too surprised or disappointed with the plastic nut, saddle, and bridge pins - an all-solid guitar in this price range, those can easily be replace with the money you save. I don't really like the pickguard, but it's just a visual thing and I'm not really into replacing it. As far as sound, thing sounds like glass, and very playable right out of the box. The neck on mine needed a slight adjustment but that's usually the case with new acoustics. The case that's included in the price is not ... MoreBought mine on clearance. It's a nice thick hardshell you'd expect to get with a guitar twice the price.

The A1R is a great guitar in every aspect. It's well built, action and neck feel good, looks nice and most importantly it sings like bird! I don't own any high end brands like Martin or Taylor but I do own a Seagull solid wood and Breedlove in the same price range and this Yamaha is still my favorite by a landslide. To be honest, I can't imagine any acoustic guitar in any price range sounding much better. Put some cleartone strings on it and it really sparkles!

Delicious guitar

Better than anything in it's price range. Such excellent definition and sound. Makes me a better player and takes me places musically I haven't gone before. Wish it were tad louder, both plugged and unplugged, but that is about it. Beautiful, very well made, coupled with my THR10 it is breathtaking. Play it against Martin or Taylor and you would probably agree it is better. Good job, Yamaha.

I bought this guitar about a month ago now and I play it everyday. I really loved this guitar at the shop when I played it and it just keeps growing on me! I love it! The all rosewood body has a smooth balance to it, the shape has a great midrange scoop on it that makes it easy to sing with. Sometimes with my dreadnaught I always felt I had to overpower and push my voice to cut through and now I can back off and my voice is more mellow. The ebony fingerboard is has a very crisp attack to it and the shape is easy to play. The electronics has a lot of choices on it depending on the amp or P.A. your playing through and helps dial in the guitar better.I was looking for an acoustic guitar that was in the price range that this was in and I really shopped around for ... MoreI bought this guitar about a month ago now and I play it everyday. This guitar's price in the store caught my eye, the real wood body and ebony fingerboard and electronics made me pick it up to try it out and the sound and playability made me buy it. I really love the looks of this too, that is probably the unsung part of the AC3R is the beautfiul binding and finish on it. Even though it doesn't come with a bone nut or saddle it really competes and surpasses the other guitars in the price range. Other guitars either have laminate sides, or laminate sides AND backs, or just do not have that finished quality to them. For the money you really cannot beat the AC3R, all solid rosewood body, solid spruce top, mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard, ebony bridge, electronics and a case! And I got mine for UNDER $800!!

I had been a professional guitarist during the 1990's. Now I'm semi-pro. I have literally played every make of guitar there is. When I played the A3R, I left and it bothered me for about a week and I came back and bought one. I liked it so much I ordered a AC3R, because I play fingerstyle acoustic and when it came in, after playing it, I immediately bought it. The neck and sound of the guitar just floored me. I ordered both guitars in the vintage finish and they look just great. It was well-balanced, not having any string louder than the other. After experimenting with strings I found the right set and the guitar sounds perfect. The body is smaller than the A3R, but the neck is the same size. I like that a lot. I sold a guitar that cost twice what this cost and I ended up with twice the guitar I sold. I haven't been with Yamaha in a long time. I'm back to stay.

Something special
3 March 2016

I am writing this review to try and help if you are thinking about the A1R . When this guitar arrived I was really impressed with the sound and look. I have the sunburst finish, it looks awesome. The rosewood is beautiful as well. Even so, I was borderline obsessed with getting an AC3R or A3R which are the next level up with solid wood back and sides. So I found an A3R and put my A1R up for sale. When the A3R came, I played them together and tried to discern which one was better, both plugged in and not. Honestly, I liked the tone of my A1R best. And being that it has laminated sides and back, it is significantly lighter, which I had taken for granted. The funniest thing is that the rosewood on my A1R looks more real than on the A3R with its gloss finish! All this ... MoreI am writing this review to try and help if you are thinking about the A1R . So I was not at all sad to let my A3R go. Full, rich sound, terrific cut on the neck make it fun to play. I learned my lesson, this is a keeper.

Typical Yamaha Excellence For Less

i've been a long time fan of Yamaha acoustic guitars and have had the same Yamaha for nearly twenty years. i've written many songs with it and performed live numerous times with it without incident. i think that your guitar, over time, becomes an extension of you. at 41, i decided to upgrade to a higher end instrument. with the mindset that it could full well be my last acoustic guitar purchase, i did my research. i'm not kidding ya, i read about and played every acoustic i could get my hands on - taylor, guild, martin, seagull (great guitars), fender, gibson (not great guitars) - all the 'greats' for the better part of a year. in the end, and in my opinion, the biggest difference i could find between all of those and the a1r was price and ego. this guitar is every ... Morei've been a long time fan of Yamaha acoustic guitars and have had the same Yamaha for nearly twenty years. i've written many songs with it and performed live numerous times with it without incident. i think that your guitar, over time, becomes an extension of you. at 41, i decided to upgrade to a higher end instrument. with the mindset that it could full well be my last acoustic guitar purchase, i did my research. i'm not kidding ya, i read about and played every acoustic i could get my hands on - taylor, guild, martin, seagull (great guitars), fender, gibson (not great guitars) - all the 'greats' for the better part of a year. in the end, and in my opinion, the biggest difference i could find between all of those and the a1r was price and ego. this guitar is every bit as good as any of them without the price tag or the swelled heads. plus, this one comes with an excellent hard shell case. what kind of company would charge a grand for an instrument and send you home with it in a box? madness! i would encourage anyone in the market to at least try the A or L series before spending thousands for a name or country of origin. you're just paying a tax for soil location. these folks have been building guitars for a long, long time and it really shows. Whatever you choose, good luck and enjoy your new guitar!

Very solid guitar for the price
30 December 2014

I am really happy with the purchase, I picked this up in a big box store for 50% of the MSRP out the door. At that price, I couldn't sniff a guitar that has an equal quality to price ratio. It still sounds a little tight, but most comment that after a year or so of playing it really begins to open up. The sound is very articulate & precise, with a nice rich mid-range. I love the way the electronics sound with the blend feature between the modeling and the piezo. The neck is by far the best feature of this guitar, it feels really broken in with no rough fret edges. You could play the guitar for hours with no discomfort at all. Besides that, it is perfect in every other way. This is the best value for a solid wood body guitar. You will not be disappointed.
