I wanted to buy a Taylor or a Martin guitar and I played a bunch of them. Then a salesman told me to try the Yamaha FG830. BOOM done. The rosewood back really amplifies the sound, much better than the FG800. Looking for the mid level guitar, this is it.

One year old and several hundred hours gig and practice time. Still loving it. Deep tone, articulate mids, great projection. This guitar is ALIVE! Electronics provide an accurate sound. I play hard to carry a beat when I'm solo, and this guitar has held up well. Yet, when fingerpicked, every note comes through clearly. Every bit as good as a Martin and only a third of the price. Finish and build quality equal or better than boutique guitars costing thousands more. Stays in tune forever...like most Yamahas. What's not to like? My 3rd FG. There will be a fourth.

Full body acoustic sound, just what I was looking for! Low fret height. Set up was ok out of the box but I will need to file the saddle and nut a little. You'll want to get better strings before playing out. I'm a singer/songwriter who plays for family and friends though I used play open mics and was in a couple bands. Great for me! Sounds good amped. As good or better than my previous Fender dreadnought and Washburn festival series (acoustics from the 90's). I would buy this guitar again.
The sound can only be described as beautiful. Rich and full. Excellent buying regardless of price point. Great for those who don't want to thrash the guitar to get loud clean tones. Bought as a gift for my young Son, he's been playing electric for a couple of years. My father was a professional guitarist, and an avid collector..
This is only the second guitar I've owned, but I really love it. I only gave it four stars as I don't feel experienced enough to give it 5 stars, but after 1 year of ownership, I still love picking it up. It's a great value guitar if you get a used one, but if you're gonna get one to beat on then just get the Yamaha FG800.
I have not been playing for a long time so take this review knowing that. I have had this Yamaha FGX 830 for close to a year now and I was a total beginner. (I didn't even know how to make a D chord). I have practiced and it's brought me great joy. The only thing I wish Yamaha would have done was had a strap button on the front rather than tying at the nut. I really don't think I could have asked for a better guitar to learn on. Well maybe I could but really didn't know how much I was going to enjoy it. Over all I am happy with it. Stays in tune and looks great.
Small gigs around townits perfect. Very affordable. Yamaha could make these even better by spending more time during setup. Especially for beginners, a hard to play guitar is very dicouraging. MY FGX830 took 2 hours to set up and plays as well or better than most pro set up guitars. String height is critical.
I took the decision to buy this guitar, reading the reviews, and I loved it. this was a store return, but basically is new. My style is classical guitar, finger picking. This guitar has a very classic sound, good access to the low frets, the tuner is easy to use, the basses, mids and highs are clear and clean, the only thing in con: the strings that have a high action, and a terrible squeak when changing the position of the fingers. I will improve these two points with another stringing and I will change the bridge and nut for bone, lowering the action of the strings. this with les than 20 dolars.
This is a very nice piece of kit. Yamahas have a high end light sound delivery. Every guitar is different of course. I find the action is much too high so i left it in to a luthier to sort my playing style. I like the strings to be as low as possible to the fretboard. But its great value and a good sound for the price and looks the part. Would recommend
