A good low cost intro to Yamaha's MusicCast series receivers.

This one is a relatively inexpensive way to introduce yourself to the Yamaha network receiver line, and for many people, it's all you need. It sounds quite good, but it's not the top of the line. It has all the connectivity one could probably think of, including Bluetooth and Internet. As far as the audio chain, if you have basic speakers and want a basic do-everything receiver that sounds great, I can highly recommend this. It pairs quite well with the better speakers in the $500 to $600 range. However, if you're more of an audiophile and want better specs (mainly in THD and other numbers audiophiles consider important), I would recommend you upgrade to Yamaha's R-N602 or higher, which has the same basic features but a much better amplifier system with lower distortion and less Digital Signal Processing (DSP). As for Internet connectivity, the WiFi is only 2.4GHz, and you may have performance issues, especially since that band is often crowded in most homes. I would highly recommend using a direct Ethernet connection (Receiver does have an RJ-11 jack on the back.) I haven't had any problems receiving Internet radio or playing music from my NAS. In my house, the 2.4G WiFi is not reliable for streaming. For you vinyl fans out there, this receiver also has Phono inputs, so you don't need to provide your own preamp. So you can use any turntable that has direct cartridge output. (You can always use one of the Line inputs if your turntable has a preamp.) The receiver can also receive services like Sirius XM, Deezer, and lots of services I don't subscribe to. (Go to Yamaha's web site and download the owner's manual to see everything.) I upgraded my speakers and so I needed to upgrade to the better Yamaha R-N602, and moved the R-N303 to another room. Using Yamaha's MusicCast app, you can, for instance, play a turntable on the R-N602 and broadcast it to the R-N303 in your bedroom! I'm a big fan of Yamaha's network stereo receivers. They just do what they're supposed to do, and when it's time to upgrade, Yamaha still has you covered. In a nutshell, if you want a basic low(ish) cost stereo receiver that does everything, I recommend this one. If you can afford to be an audiophile and have a bigger budget, I'd look for higher numbers in Yamaha's R-N line. Check the specs and the cost of moving up and decide from there.

Excellent 2-Channel Yamaha Receiver (R-N303)

Thus, the power of the Yamaha is only a fraction of the power I had in the NAD, despite Yamaha’s claim their receiver is high powered. Fortunately, this doesn’t affect my listening enjoyment since I don’t listen to loud music but feel I could still listen to higher volume music if I chose to.I haven’t synced to Bluetooth yet but I’m anxious to do so to play tunes from my iPhone. The Yamaha has numerous radio station presets so it’s easy to go from one radio station to another.Overall I’m very pleased with the Yamaha receiver and would recommend it to anyone looking for a basic 2 channel receiver. I was looking for two primary things in a receiver (good music tonal range and a quality tuner), and I’ve found both in this exceptional receiver.

This receiver was purchased to replace a 24 year old Yamaha receiver. Pros: Nice simple appearance, good features for the price, easy to set up, felt well built. I had it hooked up, connected to my wifi (through IOS share) and playing via AirPlay very quickly. Cons: the sound quality was disappointing. It sounded "leaner" than my old receiver that was rated at 80W vs this at 100W. Also it had a higher noise floor which I could hear at low volume levels. I may still recommend this if you have a basic audio system and you don't want to spend any more.

Good receiver for the price

Good receiver. Overall I have been pleased with this receiver and it's functions. Being able to semi-control it from my phone has been a fantastic feature. (seriously, who carries the remote with them?). Initial setup of the app via WIFI didn't go as the instructions said, but I found a way. I had to disconnect both my phone and the receiver from WIFI, and then re-connect. Even then, the MUSICCASTSETUP network wasn't available but there was a generic YAMAHA network available for temporary connection which I did. Then back to settings on my phone and the MUSICCASTSETUP network was visible. After that setup was just as described. I say semi-control because you cannot control all of the features. You must switch between A & B speakers manually. Also, I have my CD player hooked up and the only control of the CD player is play, and stop. You must power the CD player on manually, which makes sense since it is not the Yamaha Receiver. Bluetooth was easy to setup and works fine as long as my phone is close to the receiver. I use an old phone for storing my music so that might be the limits of the phone. One thing I do want to mention about the FM antenna. It sucks. But it can be modified to work much better. It's a single wire so I stripped some insulation off the end and simply extended the wire with some old speaker wire (about 12'). Just for the heck of it I wrapped the other end around a piece of chicken wire and it works great! All in all, I am very pleased with this receiver and would recommend it to anyone.

I purchased the Yamaha R-N303 to replace a receiver from the 1970s. I just wanted 2-channels, an AM/FM tuner, phono and line inputs, and line output. This model was the closest I found at B & H. I don’t need networking and the remote control will stay in the box. The manual only describes how to operate the unit with the remote control, but there are just enough front panel controls to make the remote unnecessary for my needs.Banana sockets are an odd choice for speaker connections. I cut the RCA plugs and striped the wires to use the screw down posts that are integrated with the banana sockets. They seem flimsy and the wire has to be inserted awkwardly close to the chassis. I cut the RCA plugs and striped the wires to use the screw down posts that are integrated with the banana sockets. They seem flimsy and the wire has to be inserted awkwardly close to the chassis. After power up, I missed hardware control for things that can only be accessed through menus, and I missed being able to glance at the position of knobs to see volume, balance, bass and treble settings. In fact balance can only be adjusted with the remote control, described in the “Advanced Operation” section of the manual. I know it’s cheaper to include a huge set of features in software than a few simple hardware controls, but balance is advanced operation? There’s no “Loudness” equalization to compensate for low volume listening. The RIAA equalization seems off. At least the input menu has the items I care about adjacent to each other so I don’t have to scroll through the 13 other items I don’t plan to use.Low frequency response cutoff is 40Hz instead of the usual 20Hz. Consequently the 100 watt power rating of this receiver is deceptive: it produces about the same volume through the same speakers as the 32 watt receiver it is replacing, and I do notice the lack of low frequency punch. Inserting a headphone jack automatically cuts off both A and B speakers. Small external AM and FM antennas are included but without a signal strength meter you have to guess where to position them. Placing the AM antenna near the right side of the unit gets you a lot of noise, presumably from unshielded digital components. Tuning between different ends of the radio spectrum is a chore compared to the flywheel tuning mechanism and dial pointer of my old receiver.Overall it’s adequate but disappointing. Tries to do new cool stuff while skimping on the basics.

Love it!

My first receiver way back in 1979 was a Yamaha Natural Sound Receiver which I loved and had for years until I upgraded to separates. As I age I didn't want all the pieces, plus wasn't looking to spend all the money that I used to on eguipment, but still wanted decent audiophile quality sound. Doing research, this unit kept coming up, so after months of contemplating I pulled the trigger. I couldn't be happier! Firstly, it's super easy to set up. Next, I got rid of all my old albums and CDs, just got tired of all the stuff and want to travel light, so I stream and use mp3 files now. This thing makes my smartphone endless music collection. I play my Google Play Music, Spotify, Pandora, Amazon Music, and my purchased mp3 downloads through the Bluetooth connection, and it's just what I had hoped for. Here's the most important part. I'm very finicky about sound. I have to say, I'm so impressed with the refinement in the sound quality of this R-N303. Nice balanced highs, smooth even midrange, and excellent bass! That's keeping the bass and treble on the flat settings. Slight adjustments allow me to tailor the sound to however I like it. I have even done MusicCast yet but I will be trying that out soon. If you're interested in an easy inexpensive receiver, that allows you to stream your favorite content and yet has the sound quality of equipment costing hundreds of dollars more, you owe it to yourself to look at the Yamaha R-N303 Stereo Receiver. It's that good!

Mixed bag
15 April 2022

I bought this receiver to allow easy access to streaming services and internet radio. It is mixed bag for sure, totally depending on the input. Internet radio is abysmal. Tinny like a cheap old time transistor radio. Streaming to the receiver via Bluetooth is easy and decent quality. Sirius XM would not accept my username or password but I could stream this from my phone via Bluetooth. Connecting via fm radio or turntable gave great sound just like one would expect from Yamaha. All in all, so so performance for what I purchased this for.

Perfect product for those wanting a stereo with traditional components and modern connectivity options

I have really liked Yamaha audio products over the years. I recently wanted to put together a modest hifi set up in my bedroom that had traditional and modern input options. For this I originally purchased a Cambridge Audio AXR85 which is an impressive receiver and the build and sound quality are notable better than this Yamaha however, I returned the Cambridge because the bluetooth connectivity was terrible and the Yamaha offered the addition of MusicCast which is something you can build an entire home system around. I only give this 4 star because like many others, I had some difficulty with setting it up on our network. Once you fight through that you have an open door to some really cool options. I plan on soon purchasing a Yamaha Aventage home theater receiver so we can extend the MusicCast home network. Bottom-line - a great value if you are looking for utilizing the wireless network (MusicCast)feature and are up the challenge of setting it up.

Works great but takes some setup, some Android caveats
28 June 2021

The unit performs very well but there are some issues. #1 You have to manually set up wifi using your remote control that comes with the unit. Don't try to follow the instructions for MusicCast if you are going to use an Android phone. #2 Make sure when the unit connects to wi-fi or wired connection that it performs all firmware updates before proceeding. I found I could not use the MusicCast app to set up the unit because it needed firmware updates before it would connect. WPS does seem to work for this. #3 once all the firmware is updated - and this might take multiple rounds, keep checking - THEN you can connect to the MusicCast app. #4 your phone if Android MUST be connected to a 2.4GHz WiFi network and not a 5GHz. The sound quality and power seemed lacking, and though I didn't want the WiFi connections, I still dug into it trying to make things work. The WiFi light just kept blinking.I struggled with that to the point I just left it alone. I loaded batteries into the remote because I read it was needed to get into other areas of the receiver.I moved through the options and I went into the volume trim where I bumped it up to 10. Things started to take shape as I checked the CD operation, tuner and phono section. I began to have second thoughts. The next day, the WiFi light stayed on steady so I downloaded the MusicCast app onto my phone and tablet. I tried the Net Radio but it didn't offer me much it seemed. I then decided to set-up a Pandora account and things really became interesting. In fact, through it all, I discovered Pandora is a better option than I thought. I now even play it on my motorcycle using my phone and it works very well. Better than Sirius, which I cancelled a few months ago.Anyway, after having this Yamaha receiver for about 5 days now, I am enjoying the sound and I really like the WiFi connectivity. I even played music from my laptop via WiFi.The cabinet this is in stays nice and cool, which the old system always made very warm and required fans to help keep cool.I say give this unit a chance.
