Oh my goodness . . . I decided to pick up the clarinet again after a 49 year break. I was determined to get the instrument I wanted at a price that made sense. This instrument has a beautiful tone, and though I haven't played for years, I am already playing better than I did with my student instrument back in high school. So blessed to have found this! Plus, it came much sooner than I expected so that was a bonus too.

This is a wood product with a very rich warm tone. Comes with a reed (kind of Hard but will mellow after playing) hard case, cork grease, a cleaning cloth and even a soft case that has a zipper for music and assessories. Key action is fantastic and pads seat consistently. This clarinet is to be played for only 1/2 hour at a time for the first two weeks...presumably for the wood as the moisture and temparature elevating to quickly could crack the instrument.

This clarinet was not in great condition but is structurally sound. Wood dry and discoloured but has come up looking new after application of oil. Will have corks and pads replaced soon for nominal cost at which time instrument will be in very good condition

However, this can be fixed with a bit of elbow grease and silver polish.As for playing the instrument, the keys on this clarinet as not difficult to hold down and are pretty steardy and robust. However, the low E/ middle B and the low F#/ C# keys are a little clunky and stiff as the springs are a bit too tight. However, this does not hinder the playing of the instrument and therefore not a huge worry.I think in general, all yamaha instruments are pretty robust to damage as my clarinet had been knocked over a few times and is still in good working order.

I was looking for the highest quality instrument for a reasonable price without getting into the $2K range. Tried an E11 and was very disappointed with intonation issues and breathy throat tones. Tried the Yamaha YCL450 and was pleased with its even intonation, but it wasn't as easy-playing as I expected and had fuzzy mid-range notes also, which I was told would be fixed with a pad adjustment. Decided to try 650 instead and glad i did! For the minor price difference (with a sale and rebate, especially!) the silver keys, beautiful wood, playability/great action are much better - definitely worth it. C# a bit fuzzy but will likely be fixed with pad adjustment. Clearest throat A I have played on any instrument. I have never had a new clarinet before, so i didn't know how different I would find this instrument. I thought my tone was clear on my old Boozy, but when I played on this, the difference was amazing. Has a lovely clear tone. Very responsive keys. Wish I had managed to buy it before. I am not a professional player, but for me, this is all I need. Very pleased with it.
This is a great clarinet. It's rated as intermediate but it really is entry level professional. It has a very focused tone and the tuning is excellent. Like all Yamaha instruments the build quality is of the finest.The key work feels very comfortable and it plays well with a variety of mouthpieces. The YCL52 really has no bad points, and plenty of good ones. Yamaha clarinets are one of the clarinet world's best kept secrets.
