Z Cam E2-S6 EF Mount Super 35mm 6K Cinema Camera
With a Super 35mm sensor and a 6K 10-bit sensor, the Z Cam takes the next step in camera evolution. Dynamic range of 14 stops, Z Raw, ProRes and the choice of EF or PL mount leave nothing to be desired. Featuring the film industry's most popular Super 35mm sensor, the Z CAM debuts the flagship E2 series with the E2-S6. The uncompromising 6K resolution leaves plenty of freedom in post-production, but the 6K/4K resolutions are also uncompromising in 10-bit to 50/60 fps (depending on mode), as well as ProRes, Z Raw and H.265 codec. Not to worry, because the famous variable frame mode does not have to be renounced and the E2-S6 offers 4K up to 100 fps (4096x1728, 2: 4: 1).

I've been practising with this camera for several weeks now and I'm 100% sure it was the right choice for me. There are several things that can/should/will be improved with time, and getting accustomed to such a different workflow has been tricky, but it's absolutely worth it. The dynamic range is incredible, the resolutions and framerates are reliable and impressive, the form factor is minimal and lightweight, and the flexibility is unparalleled. There are a couple things that bother me - for example, the app (which you don't technically "need" to use, but it's really stupid not to because of how much faster and easier it is) has an option to show focus peaking lines, which is perfect. You can customize the color of the lines, which is even better when you need the color to stand out. But, for some reason, the lines appear much more clearly on the right half of the screen. You can literally see a line down the middle between the half where the lines more or less appear vs the half where they appear really clearly. My phone doesn't have any issue showing things, it's an app issue. And it's not like it deeply impacts performance, it's just slightly annoying to see half my screen show my focus clearly and the other half just hint at it.There's also a slight trick to the white balance that took me over a week to figure out. In the app, there's a WB button, obviously for white balance, but it's always greyed out. The trick is, the button that opens your settings pops up a little window that has tabs hidden at the bottom, one of which is white balance, and when you click that tab it opens a menu that allows you to turn off the auto white balance. Once this is done, the WB button can be clicked, and it's revealed that this button only controls the temperature. It doesn't even let you adjust your red-green tint, you still have to open the settings version of the white balance menu to do that. So that's confusing and slightly annoying as well. Finally, the unit has like 5 Function buttons that can be programmed. But, they come preprogrammed to certain uses and unfortunately those uses aren't disclosed anywhere in the included user manual. They're just set up to do stuff and you don't know what, and you also don't know how to reprogram them unless you spend some time on Google figuring it out. That all said, the pluses majorly outweigh the minor inconveniences, but more importantly the developers are super engaged with the community of users, and they make a lot of updates and changes and plans based on the direct feedback they get from us. That's a huge game changer - it's not just that they plan to make it "better", they specifically improve the things that people ask them to, so the cameras updates and future plans are 100% centered around the users. That's huge.I personally shoot the majority of my footage either in C6K prores or C4K h.265 with a VFR of 90 to get cinematic slow motion. Sometimes I'll go down to the S16 resolution (basically 1080p) with a VFR of 170 to get super slow-mo, for stuff like wheels turning or raindrops, but I mostly shoot in a minimum of 4K since I produce stock footage and the resolution is important to most of my clients. It's actually to such a point already that I feel spoiled on 1080p - it suddenly looks terrible to me because of how incredible the 4K and 6K footage looks by comparison.Honestly, if you're looking to upgrade, I don't think you can do much better than this, at least not anywhere NEAR the price point.

Not going to lie, when I bought that camera I thought I was taking a risk. I wasnt sure about zcam since I never heard of it before 2019. The online community is strong, but I wasnt so sure, again, if it was some kind of tribalism or if was actualy due to the quality of the product. The Zcam E2 F6 ended up being the smartest choice between the ursa mini and the black magic pocket cinema. I tried them all, and Zcam is on top for multiple reasons. The slow motions, color rendering, the multiplicity of filming options, the reliability of the cam (been using it for 1 year and a half now, never once encountered a bug or shutdown for heat reasons or what ever), the way you can go quickly through the menu, the constant updates Zcam provides, the look (do not neglect what ... MoreNot going to lie, when I bought that camera I thought I was taking a risk. I run this little guy with 2-3 LP serie battery and it's way enough. If you have from 10 to 15k budget for a whole kit, Zcam, stabilizer, and couple lenses could last you for years to come and end up being a very reliable and quality second camera in 5-6 years if you need to upgrade. The 3 downsides of the Zcam E2F6 in my opinion are :1-Where the memory card is located on the body. If you have a cage, it's just a small struggle to open pop out and pop in the card, that's wack.2-The wifi connection is... difficult to test. I've tried 3 cellphones to operate the camera (the app is, btw, impeccable), and only 1 of them gave me a 100% fluid image. To make sure I am clear here, the cellphones are tied to the stabilizer, so it's basicly couple centimeters away from the body. There shouldnt be a problem with the wifi, especially when using the antenna that comes with the body (which does not change much regarding how strong is the signal). I do not know exactly what the problem is, and that's unfortunate. Please note that the app works on all the 3 android cellphones I have tried and there is no bugs with it at all, which could suggest it's a signal problem coming from two of my cellphones.3-Not water proof at all. Still waiting for zcam to make a coat. Thanks ladys and gents, stay safe.

This little camera punches so far above its price tag it is astounding. Fantastic image and reliable. Really good lowlight that is superior to a lot of other cinema cameras in this price range, as well as higher tier cinema cameras.Throw a cheap cage, side-handle, and monitor on this bad boy and start shooting. I like that you can grow the camera as your needs grow: on monitor control with the AtomosV, electronic ND's, swappable lens mounts, etc.Main Gripe: I wish the audio interface was better. When I shoot interviews I run audio to a different camera because I'm not very confident in the options this camera provides in that area.

Like a lot of people, I have been tempted by full frame mirrorless cameras as their readout speed continues to improve and the frame rates gain parity with some smaller MFT bodies that have had 4K@60p for awhile. The impressive thing about Z-Cam is their willingness to open up new resolutions that solve specific user scenarios. The 5K modes were especially interesting to me, as that gets you 60p for a little slow motion capability, but still utilizes a majority of the sensor. It also allows me to use my DZO Film 20-70 cinema zoom in MFT mount that I originally bought to pair with an E2 model. That was a really great camera, and I miss the 160fps capability, but the truth is that the S6 just offers a lot more flexibility in a number of key areas. The noise in lowlight on this camera is a lot easier to control, and despite the second native ISO only being 1250, it seems to be usable all of the way through 8 or 10K. I also own the Fuji X-T4 with essentially the same sensor, and it is only usable through 3200 or so. Z-Cam's analog gain circuitry really does make a difference here.Rigging, button remapping, swappable lens mounts (native speedbooster, EF with electronic ND, etc), CFAST cards, and SSD for longer recording are all features that add huge value to the overall package. It isn't a budget option compared to the BlackMagic Pocket 6K, but the things you can do with it for a little more money are HUGE.Electronic ND has been a tough one due to limited availability, but for the same camera to have a positive locking EF mount with eND for shooting outside, and a separate mount with a speedbooster to gain FF-level field of view and depth of field capabilities is just an incredible value. Plus a MFT mount that opens up a ton of lens options for models that were made to cover S35 like the Sigma 16, 30, and 56mm f1.4 models.I love it enough to have bought a second S6 as a second angle when filming live music at my pub venue. They are just amazing.
I've used the F6 for 3 years now, and for all that many other cameras have likely overtaken it now on certain specs, it's still the camera I use the most. The image quality is really special, particularly when you learn how to grade it in Resolve: don't take the results of recent camera tests on YouTube with a rec709 lut applied at face value, zlog2 can be graded to look amazing when you know how. On shoots where I've been alongside other high end camera ops, the footage has stood out. At its most basic you can run it with a handle and a mobile phone as a monitor, and you're good to go. I shoot a lot in the freezing snow, and in these conditions the F6 is SO much easier to operate than a mirrorless, or camera covered in tiny buttons. It's power-efficient and thermally efficient too. I've shot in up to 39C without any problems. It's been up and down mountains, racing down ski runs, filmed top ski racers and never missed a beat. You can use it with anything from a tiny NPF to a big V mount, using the excellent Nitze QR system. The variety of resolutions and frame rates is superb, with so many options for anamorphic (it even has vertical desqueeze). If you like to do step printing, it's a breeze. Rolling shutter is its achilles heel, but if you're careful handling the camera, it's really not noticeable. There's a 4k lo-jello mode for those times where you need to make sure rolling shutter is at a minimum.Go with Exascend Cfast cards, the only ones recommended. I haven't had any problems over all the time I've used these. For grading, sure, Resolve doesn't have built in profiles for Z-Cam, but there's a lot of great content available on YouTube on how to grade zlog2. I now find using my Powergrades, I can get a better image more quickly than I can with other cams I have, like the S5iix and R5C. I use the S5iix as a B cam with the F6, but the image coming out of the F6 is significantly nicer IMO. And the S5iix is already excellent, technically having more DR than the F6. But that's where stats can be misleading. You can get Open Gate BRaw with a Video Assist, perfect for high quality anamorphic footage. Or ProRes Raw with a Ninja, which looks really special, though it adds an extra step for grading if you use Resolve. On a spec list you may find other cameras that seem better on paper, but all cameras compromise somewhere, and for me in terms of overall usability, the F6 still goes with me the most. If the long-awaited box camera that came out recently were a bit more like the F6 I'd probably go for one. But it isn't, so I probably won't ;-)
I’ve had my eye on this camera since NAB last year. With the new reduction in price I decided to make a move on purchasing this camera. First impressions is it’s a rock solid filmmaking machine. The size and form factor of it make it a great option for handheld of gimbal use without a heavy payload to carry. There are so many ways you can record from this camera via an external monitor recorder over HDMI, USB C to an external SSD or cFast card in the camera. You also have a built in wireless transmitter which when connected to an iPhone or iPad via the z-cam app becomes a wireless client monitor or a remote control for you camera if it’s mounted in an out of reach location. You also have a built in wireless transmitter which when connected to an iPhone or iPad via the z-cam app becomes a wireless client monitor or a remote control for you camera if it’s mounted in an out of reach location. I also love the ability to switch out the lens mount system. The EF mount is a locking bayonet mount which holds the lens tight against the camera. Only issue with this mount is it is not a twist lock mount. It functions like a PL mount and takes the lens in a static position. You definitely require two hands to change a lens which is something to get used to. I decided to go with the S6 as I figured a speed booster would still work on this camera using the MFT mount. With the MFT mount and an FD speed booster I can get full frame and there is only a slight vignette on the edge of the frame. To eliminate this you can change the camera to 5K mode which crops in on the sensor slightly and you effectively still get close to the full frame look without any vignette. You also get the bonus of the extra stop of light from the speed booster and higher frame rates in 5K. The 10 bit codecs in camera are solid. ProRes 422 or H.265 both look nice when graded in Resolve and it’s tough to see a major difference between the two. This means filming at 6K H.265 is a totally viable options. I was a bit worried about it being less flexible in post being a 4:2:0 codec. Still more tests to be done on this but first impressions are it works great. Overall you really can’t go wrong owning this camera at this price.

Pretty sure new Red v-raptor has it as well, so maybe more options will come out- Internal preamps, they aren't the best- CFAST 2.0, it's really expensive, but reliable- Sony E mount, it's made by viltrox, double the cost of the native zcam mounts, and isn't reliable and doesn't securely hold the lens- Post workflow, I use resolve with the ZLOG plugin, which looks amazing, but a little annoying I can't use the native resolve colour tools for the same result. would love to see BRAW. ZRAW is even worse, have to convert in their own software.- External ssd recording, it isn't the most reliable, even with both connections locked down- No a big name brand. It normally doesn't matter, but sometimes clients want to hear Canon or Sony.
This was my first cinema camera. Image quality is amazing which is to be expected since it shares sensors with the BMPCC 6K. Its a super flexible camera with its formats, recording media, and EF mount (with ND module support). What I didn't expect was for the usability to be this amazing. Connecting to the app and using it to monitor/control the camera made things supers easy on shoot days. And it performed flawlessly for cinema camera things. However I ultimately ended up selling mine because I simply wasn't ready for a cinema camera.Things like photo capabilities, not having to rig up and break down a system every time I wanted to record, and autofocus were things I was missing greatly. This isn't the cameras fault, as it does exactly what it is advertised to ... MoreThis was my first cinema camera. If, and only if, you're prepared to jump into the cinema camera should you be looking into these, but this is definitely an EXCELLENT choice if you are.In case you're wondering, I now shoot on the Sony a7IV and I sold all my Canon gear and EF lenses. I do miss walking onto sets with that ZCam rig and looking like a true pro though.
Coming from being a RED owner a 100% self-employed videographer for 11 years.I've shot on every camera brand except an ARRI. The image from this camera is truly special. It is very clean, sharp and detailed but somehow retains an organic filmic tone. The look of it just looks right, thats all I can say. The auto white balance works better than manually doing it. The interchangeable mounts are SOLID and CHEAP. Battery life...awesome. Lowlight...competes with the A7s's. High frame rates...abundant and completely usable. Reliability, I keep up with the firmware releases and have NEVER had a problem. The iOS integration is 95% amazing (better than all other camera brands). IMO this is the way of the future and Z-Cam is doing it well. The size of it is perfect. But I mean come on, the CEO of the company will respond to you on Facebook about the camera, and they are regularly integrating major improvements without releasing entirely new camera systems that you have to buy. Another con is that nobody knows about the camera brand. So clients ask you about it a lot, and are cautious if you want to use it in a professional/commercial environment. One cool thing is that since owning it so many people come up to me and compliment how cool they think the camera looks aesthetically. The dynamic range is at the top of the game. I'm blown away by it even when I shoot in H.264 low bit rates/baked in color profiles. Also it has the motion cadence of RED and BMD. If you've only shot on DSLR's and mirrorless cameras for years, the first time you edit Z-Cam footage you will notice, the way the objects in the image move just feels high end. It's subtle but its there. Please filmmakers, give Z-Cam a shot! I believe this company is doing what RED did many years ago. Changing the game, making futuristic images at affordable prices.
So, the first thing is first- this camera is amazing! Why? It's an affordable cinema camera that can capture great 6k video footage in Z Cams proprietary RAW or standard pro-res 422, LT, HQ, or standard Rec. 709 in a LOG 2 profile. Now, the footage is a breeze to work with, except if you're shooting ZRAW since it has yet to gain support on editing suites. One has to use their conversion program, which is a time-consuming process if you've got a lot of footage to work with. I also had hot pixels out of the box, and had to run a quick calibration- this is something that should have been done at the factory in QC to avoid having to make the customer perform this operation. I also had hot pixels out of the box, and had to run a quick calibration- this is something that should have been done at the factory in QC to avoid having to make the customer perform this operation. However, for the price, you get what you pay for. The construction is solid, all-metal build with an improved response in the tactile feedback when using buttons or navigating the menu. The menu does need some re-working, but for a Chinese company I'm surprised that I can actually read the menu and the word-choice is correct, maybe low-jello mode could be renamed to low shutter roll. Furthermore, there is no option to playback video, why? Do I have to off-load footage to play it back? This is not optimal for any shoot! I am curious to see how well this camera company does. I've made the investment, and have faith. Hollywood studios are beginning to use the camera for crash cams and c-cams, which should speak to the ability to match the footage to the Arris that they are using. In no way am I saying this is an Alexa, but it can capture 15 stops of DR, and shoot 120FPS (not at the same time). Whether or not the image processing pipeline is anything special, is up in the air. The image is super sharp, I recommend using a Hollywood Blackmagic to soften the image and get a more cinematic look.I would buy one again. I would recommend to a friend. But, I am and would be cautious! The company pushes lots of new hardware out, and I worry that quality may suffer over quantity. They may bite off more than they can chew.To those interested, there is a Facebook group in which the CEO communicates directly with ZCAM owners. They take suggestions and deal with customer issues daily. They are small right now, and they will either a.) become too big to keep this up or b.) take the money and run (stop releasing new hardware and fall off the earth). I am uncertain, but currently enjoy their product!I hope I could provide some insight as to what my experience has been so far, and help those interested to make a better-informed decision or purchase! Best of luck (there is no perfect camera- color correction is key!)
