As someone who uses the Apple Magic Keyboard daily, I can’t help but be impressed by its overall performance and design. The first thing that struck me was its sleek and elegant appearance – it truly complements the style of my Apple devices. But it’s not just about looks; the typing experience is fantastic. The keys are responsive and have this satisfying feel that makes typing a pleasure. One thing I really appreciate is the quietness of the keys, thanks to the scissor mechanism. It’s a small detail, but it makes a big difference, especially during late-night work sessions. And the touch ID feature? That’s a game-changer. Unlocking my device and authorizing purchases with a touch is not only convenient but also adds that extra layer of security. Battery life is no ... I really appreciate the complete keyboard layout.Function keys are programmable using System Settings Keyboard.Typing is straightforward with a nice touch. As you would expect, this works perfectly with Macs. The non-skid pads on the bottom keep it in place. TouchID keyboard is nice to have. Not having to type passwords over and over, but rather just touch the sensor is nice. It's a Mac keyboard through and through. Pretty much what one expects from Apple, with the glaring lack of backlighting on the keyboard and the price being the only things that are not great.
Firstly, the battery life is exceptional, and I have not had to charge it since I first got it. The keyboard is also incredibly responsive and connects with my computer instantly, which is a huge plus for me. The Apple Magic Keyboard with Touch ID is a game-changer. As someone who spends a lot of time typing, I can't describe the relief I felt when I got rid of my clunky old keyboard and switched to this sleek and elegant device. The most significant feature of this keyboard is undoubtedly the Touch ID. Having the ability to log in to my computer and authorize payments with just the touch of my finger is incredibly convenient, especially when I'm in a rush. The keyboard itself is Bluetooth-enabled, so it's easy to connect to my MacBook, iPad, or other Apple devices without any cables getting in the way. Overall I have found this keyboard to be very good for my purposes. It is certainly compact and light for a full function keyboard with number pad. Even though the keyboard is very light, small pads on the back make it very stable with no sliding around on the desk top. At my level of usage recharging the Magic Keyboard is required very infrequently. The number pad and Touch ID were the driving factors in my purchase because I never advanced beyond one finger, by sight use of linear number keys. I would actually grade this keyboard closer to but just short of 5 because (a) I find the alphabetic key placement to feel a little close, (b) I still like the more pronounced depressions on the Logitech keys but I am getting more accustomed to the Magic Keyboard, (c) ... I had to get a new keyboard that was Mac compatible out the box, and really hoped this was going to be worth the cost. It definitely has a much higher build quality than almost any other keyboard, including similarly priced gaming ones. And I love that it has Touch ID (which also works great, never had an issue). And it arguably has the fastest keystroke response time of any wireless keyboard I’ve ever tried. However, there are 2 cons that were just too big for me to keep it. First, the keyboard not only doesn’t have any height/angle adjustment, but the default is way too flat to type comfortably for extended periods of time. $30 keyboards have had this feature for decades. And second, I just can’t for the life of me understand why they would sell a keyboard - for $200 nonetheless - without giving it backlit keys. Even if you don’t sit in complete darkness, it’s still nice to have. And again, cheaper keyboards have this, and even let you change the brightness.Ultimately, these were just too annoying for me to continue using it for 50+ hours a week. I got the Logitech MX Keyboard for Mac, which is $80 cheaper. It’s not just less expensive, it’s also a better product. So I unfortunately will be returning this.
I purchased an Apple Magic keyboard and Magic Touchpad shortly after getting my new M1 Mac mini computer. I work from home and use my computer daily, so I do a lot of typing Monday through Friday. I am offering these pictures as proof of what you can expect your keys to look like after a year or two of daily use. I brought this problem before Apple Support and they suggested I bring the keyboard into my local Apple store. Even though the keyboard was (at that time) less than one year old, it's not covered the same as their computers. Since it was purchased separately, it's considered an accessory and isn't warrantied the same way.For a more capable and likely longer lasting alternative, I can recommend the Logitech MX Keys Mini Bluetooth keyboard. Not only can that device link up to 3 devices, it has backlit keys, a mute key for your microphone, a screenshot key, charges with USB-C, and types better than the Apple Magic keyboard. The Apple keyboard makes a slapping sound while the Logitech makes a more pleasant and muted "thunk" sound when typing. The Logitech MX Keys Mini comes in black or white and has a 10-key option as well for just a few dollars more, but I prefer the Mini arrangement as a desktop space saving alternative.
Like the magic mouse, the magic keyboard is the result of a form over function philosophy. I'm an IT manager at a small business and I've had a lot of experience with these and hear about a lot of end-user experiences. The good: Battery life, connectivity and responsiveness are all great with the magic keyboard, and unlike the magic mouse, you can actually charge this and use it at the same time. Keyboards aren't usually the easiest things to keep clean, but these are really easy to clean with a lightly misted microfiber cloth. The neutral: Some people like the ultra-low profile, flat keys and super short keystroke depth, and some people don't. I don't know anyone who uses a computer for more than a couple of hours a day who likes any of those features. If you're ... I don't know anyone who uses a computer for more than a couple of hours a day who likes any of those features. If you're a prolific typist, these are pretty ergonomically terrible. Otherwise, you might like them, especially if you're used to using a laptop all the time. The bad: The fact that you can plug this keyboard in to your Mac to use it as a corded keyboard (and to charge it), means that few people ever actually unplug them from their iMac. Why they ever discontinued the less expensive corded version of this keyboard is beyond me.The low profile everything means thin, light, flimsy materials. A six-year old could grab these keyboards with two hands and easily twist them into a pretzel. Even if you keep your magic keyboard on a solid, flat surface while typing, you're going to feel quite a lot of flex to it. To put it bluntly, this keyboard feels cheap, like free keyboard you get with most budget PCs, except those keyboards actually sell for a tenth of the magic keyboard (or less). The tiny home row key feelers on the F and J keys to help tell you touch-type wear off within a few weeks. Likewise the lettering wears off relatively quickly, though not as quickly as the F/J feelers. The failure rate is high. I don't know what the MTBF keystroke rating is on these or if it even has one. I've never received a DOA magic keyboard, but on a regular basis I have to replace these because one or two keys have quit working. I have super cheap PC keyboards that have been around 10 years without an issue, but these last maybe 3-5 years of regular office use.
