I really liked my first garmin instinct. I hike, run, swim and wanted a way to keep track of these things accurately. Then I misplaced my first watch. I had become very dependent on it. Waited 2 weeks bought this one on sale. The battery life is really long without the solar, the solar works automatically. The accuracy for many things seemed improved from first one. I was getting inaccurate heart rate spike warnings on my first not with the second. The ability to record easily weight lifting is greatly improved. Even things like texts are easier to get and read. Please remember I loved my first instinct so this is just more positive on top of the first experience. Years ago I had a forerunner. I have stayed with Garmin. Which I also see as a plus. Still has live tracking so someone knows where I am when it is on. If there is ever a safety concern that is a good feature. Love it.

I have been using this watch for about 3 months now and am a huge fan! My activities don’t vary too much outside of hiking, walks, yoga, cardio, weight training so I didn’t need something as advanced as the Phenix with colored maps and additional advanced training profiles which is part of what attracted me to this model. After extensive comparisons I went with this model as it features an updated heart rate sensor, pulse oximeter, and sleep tracking with a blend of being rugged (hardened plastic casing) and being able to download GPX tracks for vectoring/waypoints on hikes, and watch face customization. This is a great watch for people that want to be able to download GPX tracks onto their watch ahead of time, and are moderately to highly active. On a full charge and minimal gps usage I can get about 4 weeks of battery life with additional boosts when in direct sunlight (sometimes adding a day of charge time).I will say that it is a more intentional watch, though. If tracking an activity you will need to engage the tracking manually as the automatic sensing is highly variable. This model is great for the minimalist as it is black/white display only but has tons of watchface customization options, even customizable for the activity profile so your hike has different information displayed than your run/bike/weight training session/etc.Note that you get access to Garmin Express for downloading routes and pacing profiles for training but you won’t able to download apps from Garmin’s marketplace onto the watch (this wasn’t a huge need for me).If you’re looking for a watch that’s rugged and great for hikes with a KILLER battery life, and advanced features and sensors then this is a phenomenal option. It’s hard to compare it directly to the Phenix as that has features I would classify might fit a triathlete/extremely active individual, and this model serves my needs perfectly. Highly highly recommend if any of what I described in my activities/criteria describes what you’re looking for.

I try to go bush walking every Sunday in the You Yangs, Brisbane Ranges,... and the watch is just awesome for that.I love being able to plan a trek online and upload it to the watch. I can then be sure of not going off-track as it warns me if I do. I love also the elevation profile so I know of upcoming descents or climbs. My only gripe is that the text is quite small to read. I have early cataracts and unless I am in bright sunlight, sometimes, trying to read an sms is really hard.I thought of returning it but after using it on a few treks, I have decided to keep it.The solar recharge really needs brightish sunlight for it to work. I spent weeks figuring out which smartwatch and app duo to buy for 1) fitness, 2) GPS, 3) messages & calls, 4) battery life and 5) durability that cost $200. I list other reasons to grab this watch as well at the end.1) Fitness and 2) GPS - Garmin Connect, Garmin Explore and the Instinct Solar allow me to create (generic and custom), execute and track my HIITs, hikes, rides and swims (and more that I do not perform). It took me 3 seconds to figure out how to create my custom HIIT and weight training exercise groups/routines. Garmin offers a drop down list of all the exercises you can think of. I select the routine for the day, hit play on my Spotify (Via my Garmin!!) and go to it - easy!It took me some time to figure out how to start using my Instinct for maps ... MoreI spent weeks figuring out which smartwatch and app duo to buy for 1) fitness, 2) GPS, 3) messages & calls, 4) battery life and 5) durability that cost $200. Garmin offers a drop down list of all the exercises you can think of. I select the routine for the day, hit play on my Spotify (Via my Garmin!!) and go to it - easy!It took me some time to figure out how to start using my Instinct for maps and hike routes but I just let the Explore app initiate the first 2 hikes. But only because I am stubborn and wanted to play-to-learn vs spending the 14 minutes to read/watch a video... Then I got smart and watched a video explaining all features and functions and now I am as close to a pro as I need to be.I created 12 hike and bike courses in about 5 minutes using the Explore app and created two bike routes on my Instinct that are now saved in Explore and on my phone. The highest quality GPS, compass mapping and track-back features are going to be invaluable for when I do my on/off-trail 3 night hike this Spring - and I will only be bringing my phone for emergencies - keeping it off so I will be relying on the Instinct itself! The Instinct offers 3 types of GPS to use depending where you are and what you plan to do. I use basic GPS and it is accurate enough for my needs, and it uses less battery life than , and coupled with the Explore app, you don't need anything else for a weekend hike.3) Messaging and calls - I get notifications and can turn on/off Do Not Disturb from my watch. I set up Do Not Disturb windows for certain notifications thru Garmin Connect, as well as custom message replies. I can answer calls when wearing ear buds or directly on the phone via the Instinct. And it pauses Spotify whenever I take a call. This was the least important to me on my "needs" list, but now that I have it, I find myself using it more and more.4) Battery Life - So very important to me. All of my watches (except 1) are automatics or Solar! Charging daily is a big "NO" for me, as is changing batteries. Maybe it's a the only bit of prepper in me, but relying on power sucks! And what's worse are items that suck power! The Instinct Solar has a 21d battery while using base features and functions. I got in a weekend while using basic GPS during my trip (turned it off when not in use). Wnd I haven't had the watch long enough to test the Battery Save mode (1000s of hours!). And the watch still has great features in Battery Save mode - but only one base digital watch face. But seriously, if the world does end, I am not going to give two sticks about my watch face and functions because THE INSTINCT SOLAR HAS UNLIMITED POWER WITH SOLAR CHARGING, BABY! Which is moot if we have a nuclear winter... Didnt think of that one... Oh well.5) Durability - Garmin made these to be tough for rugged work and play, including cliffjumping and swimming. Seriously - saw a guy in Hawaii banging one around ro k climbing and jumping into deep water. I just use mine in the pool for now but will be ocean-bound soon enough. The watch face is made of protective glass and the gorilla glass face protector is scratch- and shatter-proof without affecting the Solar charging capabilities. I also bought after-market rubber case covers and charging port covers, just to add a bit more protection.Others things I pondered before choosing the Instinct Solar:1. Size - 44mm is perfect. I am 6'1" 240 and it looks great on me. I've seen smaller people wear them too and it isn't "clunky" looking. It is also light so it doesn't feel like I'm wearing it.The 22mm comfy, silicon band is easily replaced with quick remove pins - I grabbed a khaki strap for mine. It feels even more comfortable and non-existant on my wrist.2. The screen!!! This is the BIG one for so many people...I thought I wanted color - I really did. And the touchscreen? For sure. So cool to scroll and tap that color screen, right!?WRONG. None of that matters with the Instinct button layout, menu screen and Widgets. Seriously. I think I am faster with the botton press and widget navigation! It's press, press, go vs slide slide go. Does you hike really care? And water doesn't accidently slide your screen like it can on touchscreens. As for color, I don't mind the monochrome display. It adds toothed rugged look in my opinion, and helps with that battery life. The Instinct even comes with two analog faces! Which I thought I would only use (a reason I got it acutally), but I don't! I have a casual and a dress dress watch for that (which I haven't worn in the month I've hadn't his Garmin).Lastly, for $230, it got all I wanted! I got an AlphaStrong Delta watch (also 21day battery with color touchscreen) and regret not spending the Xtra $100! It is total garbage compared to my Instinct!I just ditched my Delta and sold my Solor Pathfinder, which I used ALL THE TIME and am loving the Instinct. So what about the Fenix?? Sure! Same features and functions with color touchscreen. $200 vs $900-$1000 for Fenix7 solar people. The next one down is the the Fenix 6 and that is around $400-$450. The Venu doesn't compare and the Epix is a color screen downgraded Instinct overall for a little more money.Oh yeah! With the $$ I saved by not getting the Fenix6, I found a used Gravel bike to start creating new, non-MTB routes! To me this is all a bin win.Very pleased to say the least.
I received this beautiful watch as a birthday present from my wife. I had a Fitbit sense that suffered catastrophic death due to water getting behind the screen. I started looking at different watches to deal with the work I do, and the abuse that puts on my wearables. This lede to garmin, and why I chose this model for my wife to give me for my birthday. There are a lot of features that Fitbit are not interested in providing, and it is definitely more durable to deal with the abuse of my job. I live in Colorado, where the sun shines for over 300 days a year, so solar was a no brainer. So far battery life has been very good, like average of 26-27 days between charging. When I can get some sun on that, I imagine that number goes up to over 50 days between charging. ... MoreI received this beautiful watch as a birthday present from my wife. The app is very easy to use and read, although some features like stress and intensity I am not what they are about. As Roger Ebert would have said when he was alive, I give it 2 thumbs up!!
After two years I still love this watch. It is a great "watch" that also lets me receive notifications. It does many of the other fitness tracker type things as well. I has physical buttons (not touch screen) so you can use it when you've got gloves on or doing something physical where the sweat on your hands/fingers make operating touchscreens difficult. It also has a basic LCD type display so the battery lasts A LONG TIME. I get 10-14 days with everything on except for SpO2 running -- on a single charge - which was the major benefit for me --- I don't want to have to charge by watch nightly. If you bring it down to "battery saver mode" (so kinda just a normal watch mode) - as someone who works outdoors, the watch will basically work indefinitely because of its solar panel. So in general their markets is 100% accurate after over 2 years of testing... If you turn on SpO2 I think I get maybe 4-7 days of battery life... I just don't use that feature much...The only complaint that I have with this watch -- which is known by Garmin and they keep trying to fix it with this series of watches -- is the barometric sensor... It is both in a bad location and I think has some software issues. As a result you'll get inaccurate "flights climbed" statistics (I'll get a notice saying I've gone up 10 flights of stairs today, when I know my elevation change has been maybe 3 flights. This also results in an inaccurate altitude (but always within say 100 feet plus or minus -- and for my work that is 'close enough')... Also also incorrect "storm alert" because it thinks the barometric pressure has dropped a lot when it really hasn't.... If very accurate altitude or flights climbed is important to you - be sure to look into the many reviews, articles, and even documentation on their offical website for details... But since those specific things don't matter to me, its a non-issue and likely is for many others...
Only 3 stars because I've only had this watch a brief period and I'm adverse to giving things a 5 star rating ad hoc, if over the course of 6 months or so everything holds up well I would rate it higher. Battery life so far seems to be about 10 days between charges. It didn't get much solar time in that first week though. This second week, the watch is telling me it has 4 more days of battery life on the first week of 7 days before charging, having had a bit more sun time. Functions take a little getting used to with the push button design and 5 buttons that are multi-functional depending on push duration. I like everything about this watch so far and it has a lot of functions that I may never need to use. The watch is comfortable and fits my large wrist well with a little room to spare. Something I've struggled with in the past. I bought this watch on sale, and so value for money is up there. I don't know that I would place the same score if I had have paid full price. Quality...It feels cheap and looks cheap. Plastic just does that. It might be high quality plastic though. Is there such a thing?! The watch is very light on the wrist and as one who never normally wears a watch, if I don't absolutely have to, this one has only left my wrist for showers. I've slept with it on, which is saying something about how noticeable it is when worn.
It is sturdy. I am very hard on any watches as i have broken many. It is working perfectly as advertised. It is waterproof. Solar is making it where i have only charged with a cord once so far. I am sensitive to most plastic, silicone latex type products. But wrist is doing fine so far, but i am ordering a stainless steel band just as an option. Wish it had color display and more options for watch face. But it does the job. I use the heart rate, pulse, steps, calories, sleep, pulse oxygen, messages, phone, music, sunrise, calendar . Will be using for exercise at the gym when i get the chance. Have not used Gps for anything yet but planning on it in future while camping, hiking. So will update then. It is connected ( using the Connect app) to my phone and the app is easy to understand and use. I am pleased with the garmin solar instinct . I would recommend to anyone who hates charging constantly and needs a good rugged watch with loads of great features.
One of the best watch of its class on the market! Like it very much so far.Minimalistic, rugged, durable, low power consuming, tough, solar.Much better than its competitors (G-Shock GBD-1000, for instance) cause Garmin has huge experience in sport watch industry. What I like the most: size and shape - look cool and arent oversized, very comfortable, screen and information is very cotrast and easy to read in any condition, waterproof, dustproof, anti scratch screen, impact-friendly bezel, fucnctions, sport modes, stealth mode option to cut off all connections, solar charging, possibility to adjust all screen information. What I dont like: after Instinct 2 has appeared no discounts for instinct the first version (should be, I suppose:) ), if stopwatch activated ... MoreOne of the best watch of its class on the market! Great respect! Will use Garmin products in the future and will recommend.
I have used this watch every day for almost one year now. I have put it through it's pace's hiking 14ers, doing 30+ mile MTB rides and working on a trail crew and can confidently say this is one tough watch. Whether it's wrestling 400lbs rocks, crashing into gamble oak going 20mph or dragging it along class 4 and 5 routes in the mountains this watch can take it. The altimeter is accurate within 200 feet without me ever having calibrated it, it's compass is spot on and the GPS navigation is surprisingly accurate. The sunrise/sunset feature has set me up for success on countless spirit quests. Pairing it with the Garmin connect app has made it so easy to stay in touch with loved ones without interrupting the send. That all being said, to claim that this watch has a useful solar charging feature is just not the case. I once watched the battery life increase 148 days while working in the alpine without the battery icon changing whatsoever. It also claimed to be infinitely charged displaying an infinity icon while the battery icon clearly showed it wasn't fully charged (see image). This didn't really come as a surprise considering solar technology is nowhere near good enough to support the claims Garmin made about this watches abilities. Even with working 2 months in the alpine where solar intensity is the highest and without using any gps function, you will still need to recharge this watch on a bimonthly basis if battery saver is not enabled. With turning on battery saver, it will last me about 2 months, but you don't buy this watch to leave it on battery saver. I can still track 3-4 big (5+ hour) activities before needing to plug it in, and for that reason I'd buy this watch again.
