This is very nice headphone. Simple design, light, comfortable and beautifully transparent sounding. Quite bad cable, but you can easy buy better. Not complete high end, but excellent quality and joyful listening. Utter price/ performance ratio.

These are the best value & best sound for the money. There are better sounding headphones but they will cost thousands of dollars for 10% improvement in sound. They are based on the Magnepan speakers which can cost up to $30,000 and you still have to have the electronics to match the level of the speakers. Not to mention having to treat the room for acoustics. With headphones like the 400i's you get the best sound for the least amount of money. I have 2 pair, one for my stereo and one for the computer. I will forgo the typical audio review for this headphone as there are several reviews of this particular headset, easily accessible on-line elsewhere, done in a more comprehensive and more articulate way than I could manage. With that in mind, I will say that these are my first foray into Planer Magnetic Headphones and I think these cans have let me delve into the realm of high end sound and provide a sound that is clean, accurate, and abundant, likely the product of planer magnetic sound. I will say, I do take some issue with some of the reviews on-line as they may leave you with an impression that the HE-400i's bass is lacking, as they did me. After listening to these for almost two weeks, my opinion is the bass or low end of the sound is accurate, clean, and it's there! Hitting the low notes with ease and abundance, very addictive. It's by far the best bass of the cans I currently own. The only conclusion is that those who made such implications were afraid that some people might be disappointed as they may not be used to cleaner bass. With that in mind, don't mistake clean bass with lean bass. As in hitting all of the low notes with articulate and accurate sound, leaving the listener able to discern notes; a bass that is full but stops short of interfering with adjacent frequencies and complements and completes the notes played. For instance it does not cover up the ring of a kick drum or the impact/snap and reverb/echo of the snare or tom, a bass that is coherent. Anyway, to go on, the other frequencies, i.e. middle, high, and presence aspect of the phones are of an equivalent quality and all together create a coherent and addictive sound. I would like to preface, to those not used to good quality equipment, in this case the revealing nature of these cans. Your sources are paramount, and as I have found out, if the recording is of poor quality, you will hear it, so much so that it's not all that pleasant. On the other hand, if your sources are of good and superior quality, then like me, it will be such a good time that you will have a hard time putting these headphones down. I was able to pick these up during a Christmas sale. They were a steal to say the least. Of course, this is all my opinion but I'm not disappointed in these cans and the big question is, knowing what I know now, would I buy them again.. Absolutely! Purchased Christmas 2015 - updated model with an updated headphone cable connector from traditional coax F type connectors to 2.5 mm mini plugs.

Really at any price these are fantastic headphones. I spent a long time looking for sub $$headphones. Reading reviews on hifi websites, going to my local hifi store and listening to different headphones. These really take the cake. They easily compete against the next tier up of quality. The sound is balanced, sharp and detailed. I took these back into the hifi store and plugged them into the McIntosh MHA200 headphone amp and compared them to the Audioquest Nighthawk, the Sennheiser both 650 and 500 series and the McIntosh headphones and felt that these sounded better and cleaner and more balanced than all of those. They can drive even from the iPhone 6 plus and the iPod classic that i have but they really shine with a headphone amplifier. I use the Schiit Fulla but plan on upgrading to something with tubes soon. Even with the less expensive Fulla i think these sound fantastic!
My first planar headphones - it was a good price around Black Friday '17 so I pulled the trigger. Excellent sound quality. Comfortable over ear design. They are big: I use them at work and people say I look like I am at the recording studio or like a radio DJ because they are bigger than what folks usually use.Worth mentioning: I purchased them at a good price but a week later BuyDig dropped the price further by $20. I e-mailed the support and BugDig matched their own lower price! Great service. I did not have such luck with A*d-o^r#[email protected] recently when I purchased a set of speakers: they lowered the price two weeks after my purchase and then never responded to e-mail inquiries. I do hold a grudge for such behavior and will prefer BuyDig next time.#sweepstakes
The HIFIMAN HE-400i headphones are my first experience of 'Planar Magnetic' headphones and I must say I'm totally hooked on how good they sound. Although they might not be as 'bass heavy' as the previous headphones I have owned i.e Ultrasone Pro900i and Sony MDR XB1000 they are sonically better in every way. So going to be looking at the more expensive HIFIMAN Ananda or Sundara headphones for my next purchase. Fully recommended.
I use these headphones for casual music listening on my computer. The headphones are comfortable to wear, but do warm up the ears when wearing for more than 30 minutes. The headphone cable is braided and durable, however seems to constantly get in my way as it is so stiff and thick. The sound quality is pretty good, but I have not been blown away when compared to a much cheaper monoprice headphone pair. They possibly need a good break-in period and I have not listened to them long enough to notice improvements related to break-in. Another plus seems to be that the headphones work fine with mobile phones. I have not used these with a dedicated DAC yet, but rather use the amplified headphone jack that I get with my 2.1 logitech computer speaker set.
After claiming the HD650's the KINGS of the Sub $1000 headphone price range, All I can say is that things have changed. After selling my 650's a few months ago due to lack of time for listening, I decided to re-purchase the 650 since the price drop. Before the purchase, I decided to ask around and look, and sure enough, forums were filled with comments suggesting a NEW Big Boy in town, under $1000. So, I took the plunge, and sure enough I am convinced. After 100 hours of burn-in and pairing the 400i with the Fostex HP-A4BL Dac/AMP all I can say is WOW, A must own for someone who prefers the balanced yet warm-ish sound profile. Trust me, you will love it, feed it high-fi Flac's and they reproduce the recording very well, Goodbye HD650s and goodbye Dynamic Drivers, ... I am pairing the HE-400i with the Dragonfly Red USB DAC, running sound out of the USB port on my laptop. I am playing FLAC files with 16bit, 700+ kbps quality. These are amazing headphones. I am listening to Gramatik, a techno-funk artist, right now and the Hifiman HE-400i headphones are showing me layers more definition and sound beyond what I could hear with my earbuds, car stereo, etc. As can be expected, these produce sound with dimension and purity that my very nice earbuds couldn't even touch.Plugged straight into the laptop audio jack, they sound good, but when I play them through the Dragonfly Red, they are incomparably better. The music is so much deeper, bigger, more satisfying. I can hear the textures of sounds from string instruments like never before. The bass isn't very strong compared with the treble. It sounds smooth and accurate, but I feel like it could use about twice as much bass. I think I can address this with a good equalizer. That's my only critical comment.I will update this review as I learn/experience more.
The build quality is lousy. They sound good and are quite comfortable, although with weak bass. After owning them for about 5 weeks, I took them out of the case to put them on and they literally fell apart in my hands. The brackets that hold the earpieces on, the flimsy plastic fork-shaped pieces, cracked and fell apart as I put them on. If you look at the images, you can see that this is a manufacturing failure. Poor materials and poor design. This failure has been documented by numerous other people online. Don't waste your money on these. In fact, after this experience, I won't be purchasing anything made by Hifiman ever again.
