I have one of these that’s a few years old that I accidentally left outside in the rain and now has a considerable amount of oxidation and rust build up, so I thought I’d just replace it. I have now ordered 2 of these Surge Multitools off of amazon only to decide to return them within 5 minutes of having then out of the box. These were manufacturer sealed upon arrival, so I don’t blame amazon, but both have QC issues. The first was loosely assembled…..everywhere. Gravity would make it unfold for example, where as my original that I loved, had to purposefully be unfolded but held it’s closed shape under most regular movements, which is what I prefer. I returned it thinking it was a fluke and re-ordered only to find that while the second surge was tighter than the first, but still not where my original was, it had one locking release piece that was so loose that it just clanked around with any small movement, unlike the tool locking release on the other side or on any of the previous tools. Super annoying and absolutely unacceptable with what these things cost. If you’re looking for a quality tool, look elsewhere I guess. It seems Leatherman just craps these things out with out any consideration to quality control or their final fit and finish anymore.

The number of tools on the Surge is the reason I chose this model. Previously I've owned the Skeletool which was also good, but after it was lost I decided to upgrade. The pliers are strong and have hardened teeth, the wirecutters work well, and the saws and blades are sharp and effective. The wood saw blade can be replaced with any T-shank jigsaw blade, allowing for infinite types of sawblades. I found I use the scissors more than I thought I would. The scissors cut well and are only limited by their length (7/8" cutting area) as they need to be small enough to fit in the tool. There are also forums where people have been able to mod and fit other tools into the bitholder and T-shank holder, like chisels and drill bits. It is practically a toolbox in your pocket. ... MoreThe number of tools on the Surge is the reason I chose this model. It is practically a toolbox in your pocket. It seems that Leatherman has put some thought into the steels they use for the tool. All the parts are very strong for a tool that is this small. I feel that competitor's tools are made with cheaper steels and hence will not give the same performance. The only downside is the Surge is a bit hefty as an EDC item. However this is a small price to pay for the extensive usability. I have the molle compatible sheath which fits the tool and extra sawblades. It can be worn on a belt or attached to a backpack.Overall this is a tool that has been well designed and no corners were cut in the design or manufacture. Well worth what I paid for it and I expect to see many years of service.

This Surge is built like a tank. It's a beauty. The file is so pretty I almost wanted to kiss it. Everything locks into place with such a solid feel. The tolerances seem tight; the needle-nose meets perfectly and has a little bite right at the end; just perfect, and could be used for some pretty fine work. I got the black one and it came in great condition with a touch of oil where it should be. I like pretty much everything about it to be honest. I'll enjoy using it. I also got the bit set; 40 bits, very nice. I also like the ratchet very much; it fits well and can be used alone, also. There are a couple of little details if you are buying one: The clip will cover the LEFT side part that is blank and doesn't have the Leatherman Surge label. So if you have a ... So if you have a decoration there, it will be covered by the clip when you use it. No biggie, just be aware if you have it customized. Second: I bought the "Surge Set" that comes with the bit set, ratchet, and clip. This set DOES NOT come with the sheath shown on the "Surge Set" picture on the web site, which is also listed as "Nylon Sheath with Pockets", and also on the picture of the Surge you buy by itself. THAT sheath has a holder for your bit extension or ratchet you can see in the picture, and a snap. The one you actually get has no holder for the ratchet, has velcro instead of a snap, and is big enough for the Surge, but nothing else. There is not room for any of the bit set or ratchet or anything else. The tool is so great I'm not too discouraged about it; however, I will buy a sheath somewhere else since I can't seem to trust how they display them on the Leatherman site.

Quite simply, I feel this is the best multi-tool available. I demand all-locking tools, and tools accessible without opening the pliers. The P4 fits the bill perfectly. I've only had it for a few weeks and have used it many times. I've had the original Buck Tool, and the second version, the first was great but the locking mechanism wore out to the point it was dangerous to use, Buck replaced for free with the second version, which eventually corroded to the point of being useless. I've had a few Gerber's and others that just fall short in quality. My only complaint with the P4 is not having a horizontal carry option from Leatherman. I purchased a nicely hand-made leather one from Etsy, and now all is good!
My dad worked for BPA back in the 80s and 90s and used to receive Leatherman multi-tools as service awards back when they were still a very new brand. They were amazingly nice multi-tools, but none of the ones that I bought for myself over the years were the same quality as the ones he had. At some point, I realized that this was because I was purchasing the cheap models from places like Costco. I decided to take the plunge and buy one of their higher-end models, and I was not disappointed.I decided on this specific model because it was recommended by a couple of people I know who are into bushcraft. Unlike most other models, the two halves are held closed magnetically, which allows it to have a looser, smoother action once that magnetic force is overcome. I've ... Unlike most other models, the two halves are held closed magnetically, which allows it to have a looser, smoother action once that magnetic force is overcome. I've seen people flip open the pliers one-handed like a butterfly knife, though I haven't been brave enough to try that myself. All of the blades on this have a small tab or notch at the end that you can easily catch with your thumbnail to open them one-handed. The blades all lock when fully open, but there are releases on both faces of both handles that can be operated with your thumb while simultaneously using your fingers to close the blade -- once again, a one-handed action. Incidentally, the release is on the outside of the handle relative to where the blade is closing, so there's little to no risk of cutting your thumb while doing this. It's worth noting as well that all of the blades are located on the _outside_ when the pliers are closed. This was exactly what I wanted, since the blades on some of less-expensive models can only be opened after the pliers have been opened. (The means that you have to open the pliers, open the blade, and then close the pliers to have the blade in a usable position on those cheaper Leathermans). As far as the tools are concerned, it has all of the things that I always used to find myself wishing I had on hand when I would carry just a pocket knife -- pliers, wire cutters, scissors, bottle opener, Phillips and flathead screwdrivers, file, etc. It has several other tools including a small saw, a package opener, and a ruler that I haven't really made use of, but since this is not a particularly bulky multitool, I'm happy that they're included.I bought this mainly to carry around in the glove compartment of my car, and I've used it so much that I decided to buy another for my wife's car, and one for my truck. I might consider purchasing even more of these in the future as a gifts for certain friends or family, though at this price point it would be a fairly nice gift.If you're looking for a high-quality multitool, especially something that can be used one-handed (with a little practice), this is the tool for you! The price may seem a little steep at first, but the level of quality truly delivers.
I have a Skeletool CX, but I wanted something with more versatility, functions, and more heavy duty to EDC. I'm an electrician by trade and I find myself reaching for my Surge instead of into my tool bag more often than I thought I would. Especially when I'm on a ladder. Does it replace function specific tools like a wire stripper or lineman's pliers? No, but it could in a pinch and that's half the point of owning one in my opinion.I also find myself using it at home for small projects instead of bringing 3 or 4 tools in from the garage. I just keep the Surge handy on the weekends. I use the TORX bits to tighten up screws on my rifles at the range and hex bits to adjust and tighten screws on my mountain bike. You better believe that I'm taking it on every camping our hiking trip too.I bought the Surge over the other offerings from Leatherman and other companies (Gerber, SOG,Victorinox) because of the bit holder and t-shank adapter. I already have a few other blades that I keep in the pouch for different sawing needs. I also bought the ratcheting extension, it's totally worth it! The sheath has room enough to fit the Surge, the 2 bit holders, the t shank blade pouch and the ratcheting extension fits in one of the elastic sleeves on the side. I keep a Streamlight microstream usb on the other side, and even a Fisher space pen clipped on. The bit kit came free as a promotion which was a great value, and you definitely need it if you buy a tool with the bit holder. I also got it engraved because, why not?In conclusion, this tool offers a tremendous amount of versatility in a small package that I never leave home without.
This was a Christmas gift. It is incredibly useful and everything on this tool is so well-engineered. I honestly can't fault it. Perhaps some additional tools, though I have not had need of these yet. Blades are stainless and sharp, tools are effective and well-designed. Even the scissors have a spring-loaded opening mechanism where there is no coil (which is great) that works perfectly. Everything seems replaceable, I'm just not sure where to buy the spare parts if they blunt or break. I imagine that re-sharpening the serrated blade or saw would be a challenge. I can see why it has such a long warranty. I'm impressed with it.
After 12 years I decided to upgrade from a rebar I carried since high school to a new leatherman that’s better suited to what life throws at me nowadays. The Leatherman surge is a very nice upgrade over the rebar. The weight and the size of it inspire confidence that I can tackle many of the everyday tasks at home or at work. The addition of outside access scissors is very nice to have. The bit exchanger as well as the swappable saw/files really adds to life long use. So this review is honest as it gets. I ordered the surge as a birthday gift to myself, absolutely used it as a tool, did not baby the thing. I broke the awl on my first one attempting to align an ignition switch in the correct orientation. I also been the flat screwdriver bit loosening water clamps and snapped off the pocket clip with no effort. Got in touch with leatherman support and they had me a new one out. So skeptical of the tool I absolutely put it through its paces, I carry it every day, and use it for my occupation and hobbies. The new one outlived all expectations, tackling thigs from automotive repair, to working on equipment and firearms on the range. I added the ratcheting bit extender and bit kit. I've had my Leatherman Wave+, a month now and love it. It is never far away, sitting on my belt or in my day pack, which my old Gerber mp400 did and served me well until I misplaced it. In truth, while I wasn't a huge fan of the half-serrated blade, I loved my Gerber. It was light, and practical, and I didn't see the need to buy a Leatherman. But the January sales came and after living without for 3 months I decided to try out the Leatherman. The Wave+ is much heavier, and feels very robust compared to the Gerber. It is also really stiff, which I attributed to it being new and packed with grease, but even after several liberal applications of WD40 and 3-in-1 penetrating oil, it remains really stiff with no signs of loosening.I like the two blades and a tiny yet ... I also like the knife sharpener, but the irony is that as It is attached you can't sharpen its blades with it I also think the scissors are better designed and love the interchangeable screwdriver bit option.Would I recommend it? Yes, if you are looking for a really robust multitool with a lot of tools on it then this is a really good option. It is more expensive than a Gerber, but it is very solid and comes with a 25-year guarantee, and all indications are that they are true to their word without quibble. If however, you are on a tight budget, you should at least check out the opposition first before buying a Leatherman.
