A Great and Versatile Water Filtration System

Unscrew the twist off cap from the bag, which reveals a primary coarse filter to strain out leaves and other detritus while filling. Recap the bag and unscrew the long plug, making sure that you hold that end up to prevent spills. I discovered that little tip by accident. Screw the filter into the socket where the plug is, attach the filter, making sure that the little crimping tool is close to block the flow of water. You’re ready to filter! The bag needs to hang filter side down to allow water to flow through the filter. The higher the bag is hung, the faster the water can flow. The bag is well designed with several straps to do so. They can also be used at a carry strap, or to hold the feed tube up off the ground. The bagAs expected, placing the bag on the counter and filtering into the sink resulted in barely a trickle. A trial low hang did slightly better, taking in excess of three minutes to filter a single liter of water. A higher hang with more potential energy increased the flow to around a minute to filter a liter, increasing as the water level decreased.I had no problem back flushing the filter. Because I used either faucet water or near pristine water from the waterfall and the pre-filter, there was very little buildup. The cleaner the source water, the faster it will flow and the longer it will last. Filters function by clogging. One of the things I like best about this system is it’s versatility. You can screw the filter onto a standard water bottle, fill the bottle with “dirty” water and drink. I found that the flow was better if you squeeze the bottle. And that air flow back into the bottle was much faster if you unscrew the filter a bit. The filter can also be used as a straw, but I found that leaning way over and down to get to water, and some difficulty using it as a straw a little trying. Good to slip it into a pocket for day hiking if you run out of water, but would be tiresome for long trips. In my opinion, this size of filter is too large for solo backpacking, which is mostly what I do. Eight liters of water, plus the weight of the system (1 lb., 2.9 oz) weight almost 18 pounds, right about the weight of my dry pack, before adding water, food and fuel. It would be great for a small group of hikers, where you’re sharing equipment. It would also work well for base camps, car camping, and to supplement water when boondocking (camping without hookups) in my RV.A trivial downside to the system is the need to store the filter in a saline solution after use. Apparently, the filtering fibers need to stay hydrated to maintain flow, and it can be difficult to get water to flow through if they should dry out. I don’t see this as being much of a problem, but it’s worth mentioning as a precaution. Replacement filters are available for that sad day when the filter inevitably clogs for good.

Close to perfection but that's all you need!

From glamping to Overlanding, day hikes to multiday mountaineering objectives, casual bike rides to backpacking, and even padel boarding. This product lives up to what Lifestraw advertises:Enhanced microfilter performance - meaning better performance against sand and silt and maintaining great flow over the long haul.It held up fine while collecting and filtering waters from lakes and glacier water. However, compared to Lifestraws competitors, the water flowing through the filter was slightly slower. But it never dwindled or slowed. Filtration was consistent throughout my testing.Ultra-compact - our filters are removable and re-configurable for ultimate packing flexibility.True and confirmed. I've managed to shove this system into a mid-size bike packing storage compartment on one side and filter/cap on the other. Ounces are pounds, and pounds are pain from a mountaineering/hikers perspective. This system can be packed down into the brain of a pack, side pockets, and even be thrown inside a pack, taking VERY little space, if any.Highly versatile - these systems were designed to be interchangeable and feature universal threading and connectors to make them as adaptable as possible to all your gear.I didn't have the pleasure of testing this out properly. But I can say that in a crunch, you can use this as a tried and true Lifestraw Peak Series Personal Water Filter Straw. The filtration system is small enough to fit through a Gatorade bottle; seal the exposed areas with duct/gorilla tape, and you have a Lifestraw Go bottle (sort-of-ish).Extreme durability - tougher, thicker, premium materials that won't puncture, tear, rip, crack, or burst. This couldn't be any more true than the words they used! I've had this attached to the outside of my pack (empty) while rock climbing and bushwhacking, with no tears, rips, or cracks. At base camp, top it off with good old glacier stream water, drop it on rocks, and it kept filtering, hydrating and providing clean water for dehydrated food.

Excellent piece of gear
15 March 2023

As some who has traveled quite a bit, and gotten sick from it, I take my drinking water seriously. I like to have a water filter in case things go wrong, and this product certainly came through. I love the large design that fits 8 L. I hung up some really mirky water from off my roof and filtered it through into a glass that tasted perfectly clean. I was really impressed with how well the filter worked and I didn’t get sick from any of the water I drink and no aftertaste like when I UV light my water. I did this test before taking it out into the desert in Nevada since I was a bit skeptical that the filter would handle such murkiness, but it pulled right through, and it proved itself to be a valuable piece of gear to add to my long camping trip equipment list. I don’t think I can fully trust this in Hawaii since lepto gets past so many filters, but for the mainland US it is quite the addition. Letting the water passively filter is so much nicer than having to actively UV sterilize everything and endure the aftertaste. Love the gear Lifestraw. Nice work

You can make the capacity of this bag work for a variety of needs at a manageable weight. At 1lb 2.9oz it's compact and flexible enough to be packed into any backpack, side bag, or car compartment.Versatile - Whether you're filling up a water bottle or cooking at camp the system is highly versatile across any adventure. It's easy to assemble and use while making life outdoors easier and safer. What didn't work so well? - Because it's a gravity based system you can't fill the bag while it's hanging so that makes closing the filter a bit tricky when the bag is really full. I wouldn't let this stop you from purchasing as its very minor.

I was filling from a lake and the filter screen made it nearly impossible to fill. I had to remove the filter screen every time.- the filter screen was such a pain to put back on. I’d spend 5+ minutes pushing and twisting to get it back on- with the screen removed, it was still hard to fill the bladder. I thought I could simply submerge the bladder under water and boom it would fill. But because the material is so still, it made it really hard to fill.- IRL use I could only get 6 liters of water in the 8L bag.- the filter itself is so small and I think because of this I had to constantly back flush. The water I was using was relatively clean and clear of floaters. For the best results and least amount of time spent waiting for all the water to filter, I’d have to back flush every 3-4liters. No other filter I’ve used before needed this much cleaning.- because of the above issue, I had to constantly be on water duty. It would take 30-60 (hour + sometimes) minutes to completely empty the bladder (with back flushing it was slightly shorter but the time to back flush almost equaled that of just letting it run).- back flushing was a pain. Because I was needing to back flush constantly I had to be extra careful in not getting my clean water and clean parts contaminated by the bad water. I wish I could attach the syringe to the surgical tubing. But you have to pull the surgical tubing off every time you back flush. I found it worked best to remove the filter from the bladder to back flush.- there are a bunch of straps And connection points for hanging and carrying but one lays just below the filter. After filling in the lake, dirty yucky water would drip off of that strap and sometimes jump onto the clean surgical tubing that fed into my clean safe water source. I had to pay extra attention to make sure cross contamination wasn’t happening.

Great Flowrate, 8 L in 20 minutes
30 March 2023

It took ~2 minutes to filter a liter and ~20 minutes to do the entire 8 L bag, which left me happy with the performance. Not as fast as a pump but not nearly as much work either.I have used other brands of gravity filters and this one in particular is very nicely put together. I really like the pre-filter screen that is built into the opening and it is removable for when you don't need or want to use it. I thought it might be tough to fill, but I had 2-3 inches of flowing water and it filled within seconds, so no worries there. The hanging strap is very long, durable, and adjustable. There is nothing inherently wrong with the nylon surround, but it absorbs water and doesn't really dry by the time you are done filtering, so you may have to put something wet in your pack. The syringe works great and doesn't appear brittle but it is a proprietary design that looks like it could be tough to find a replacement if it ever broke.Overall, if you are looking for a gravity water filter this is a solid choice that should last for years!

This is a great product. We do lots of camping as a family and this gives me peace of mine when only non-potable water is available! I also feel better knowing my kids are drinking and brushing their teeth with this filtered water as some of then faucets are a bit questionable at times!I wanted to use this product after receiving it, but since I was unfamiliar I needed to find some time to read the directions. I’d love if there was a QR code, but after reading it and putting it together it’s not too complicated! My 11 year old and I read and put it together with me in under 5 minutes. Once I figured it out and tried it out at home a few times, I feel a lot more confident in using it for outdoor camping on our next trip. I love that the filter is reusable and there’s directions on now to store it so it lasts for multiple trips. I plan to bring jugs to fill with the filtered water as it does have a slower stream so it’s best to filter and then store. My kids can easily figure it out though and do this job on our trips! The product feels very well made and seems very durable. After washing it out, my first water didn’t have a plastic flavor either! We did a water taste test between our home RO, sink and lifestraw. Can’t wait for better weather so we can get out camping!

Simple and straightforward to use

Really enjoyed using this gravity filter from LifeStraw. Pros: it feels very sturdy. It's fairly straightforward to figure out how to use and has some nifty features, like a pinch-close piece on the hose that's easy to pinch with one hand. Comes with the carabiner you can use to rig the filter up on a tree and let gravity do its work. There's also a loop near the filling port/opening, presumably so you can hang it upside down and empty it as necessary. With a separate piece to close the bag when not filtering, could also be used to store dirty water if your "clean water" vessel isn't big enough to filter the whole 8L at once. Cons: the place the opening is positioned on the bag makes it a bit hard to get water into the bag itself unless the water is running. I didn't have an issue filling it in a stream, but I could see it being much harder to finagle if I was trying to use still water. Slightly bulky. Flow is a little on the slow side because it's gravity and not pump-operated, but really not too bad at all. Overall a really great and simple water filtration system.

Staple of the quiver

I received this product for free as part of a promotion. There are a ton of things I love about this filter and very few I don't. The biggest pro in my book is the modularity of each piece. The filter itself is very small and can fit into your pocket if you want to go fast and light. On longer trail runs, I'll just bring the filter and a foot long section of tubing to drink from. The filter screws onto plastic bottles (Smartwater, etc.) but beware it doesn't let air back in (more on this later). For longer backpacking trips, the bag, tube, cleaning syringe, and stopping mechanism that come with the product are excellent. The plastic stopper likely won't hold up to durable use but seems like a neat product (stops, locks, and adjusts flow as you please).I ... MoreI received this product for free as part of a promotion. There are a ton of things I love about this filter and very few I don't. The plastic stopper likely won't hold up to durable use but seems like a neat product (stops, locks, and adjusts flow as you please).I unfortunately received the product later than expected and could not take it into the backcountry but tested it on some of the most difficult water possible: the Southern New Jersey coast. For the uninitiated, it tastes like it's approximately 11% seawater. After several rounds of double blind tastes tests, every single person picked the water filtered by the lifestraw over conventional filters (I think we used a Brita?). High marks in the front country. I tested it a few times while running trail and I didn't get any waterborne illnesses (so far) so it seems to work well in that regard as well. The only constructive feedback I have is threefold:1. It's not the lightest option. This is really, *really* nitpicky because it works so dang well but it could be a few ounces lighter. That being said, I still plan to bring this along for any trip that I expect to filter water because the whole system is so intuitive.2. It's very difficult to draw air back through the filter. That means that if it's used on a plastic water bottle, it'll create suction that can only be relieved by opening the lid slightly to let air in. Not really a big deal but sort of annoying to keep it easy to drink.3. There's not a great way to store everything together. The top strap is great but gets in the way when I wrap the filter, cleaning syringe, and tube like a burrito in the bag. Again, very nit-picky but it would be nice to have that as an option.Overall, it's an excellent product from an ethical company at a decent price point.
