The clean is nice (5/10), The crunch is good, (7/10), the drive 1 (9/10), the drive 2 (9/10). The drive channels are really good. The clean channel is decent, but for me coming from a Princestone Reverb and Fender deluxe is a huge difference. this amps arent known for their clean channels, however they do the job.The cons: If you want to record, or use the line out, you will crash-wall with the volume with headphones, so you have to a dedicated interface to put the line in and use headphones, yep thats the way the were designed. (this is sad)I dont use the footswitch becase the fx loop doesnt work sometimes, i use Midi commander (this works great with low latency).I would recommend it only if you are pedal guy using the clean channel, or using a midi footswitch to use the 4 channels. No recommended for recording line out.

Really happy with my DSL40CR amp- it’s a great upgrade to what I was playing with before and it sounds brilliant. The channels are voiced differently with varying amounts of gain and this makes it so adaptable to different musical styles. Unmistakable Marshall growl and then a roar when you crank it. The foot switch is fine for my needs - not particularly fussed about buying the 6-way pedal to have every channel on tap. It is a little heavy, but not much more than my previous amp that was loaded with a Vintage 30 speaker. No inbuilt fx, aside from reverb, but that’s not what it’s about- I use the fx loop with pedals and it’s all good. Quick delivery from PMT and the whole process was smooth from start to finish - thanks guys!!! 🤘🤘

I had previously owned a DSL 40C which I traded away for a Blackstar HT series due to the fact that the 40C did not have a master volume control, which made it extremely hard to get a good tone and control the volume at the same time. Once I saw the new features on the 40CR I knew I wanted one. I was not disappointed. This amp sounds better than the original and with the addition of not only a master volume, but 2 switchable master volumes, and a switchable effects loop, this thing is a beast. The ultra gain channel is a more modern Marshall tone, OD1 has plenty of gain for rock and metal but just in case you need an insane amount of gain OD2 will push you over the edge. The tone shift button changes the character of the amp from a classic "scooped mid" sound to a more prominent midrange heavy tone, really useful for a more modern metal sound. All in all, I couldn't be happier and I haven't even gushed about the ability to switch between 20w and 40w power configuration. I added a 1x12 cabinet and its all the sound I need to be heard just fine with the rest of the band. I can't say enough good things about this amp. Since I feel like I have to say SOMETHING bad, I will say that the onboard reverb is definitely lacking, but since I use outboard effects anyway, it doesn't really affect me. Great purchase, I would definitely recommend this amp.

Great, but where’s the reverb?

Incredible sound, loud. Lovely, wonderful. My first Marshall. May not be the last.Docked one star because it has two reverb dials but neither produce any reverb. Checked on forums and this is normal. Just why?Although it did mean I got to buy a new pedal as well so silver linings and all that.

I got mine on sale and I'm happy with this amp. I would say this is the best amp for the money but the increasing price is slowly taking that away since not everything is going up. With a few pedals this amp can cover a lot of ground. For a combo it will fill your needs but really shines with a closed back cab with better speakers. My only gripe with the dsl line is that each model is more than slightly different. I've had the dsl 20 & dsl 100 and the first thing I noticed about the dsl40 is the presence & resonance knobs aren't as drastic, remember I'm running through the same cab. The resonance knob is particularly the weakest not having as much range as the other dsl's. To be honest I don't use this amp all the time. With pricing and quality control issues in todays crazy world the dsl40 has become my safety net. It has everything I need to get the job done and the easy individual biasing add up to a solid workhorse.

I did notice a lag when switching between A and B, as some people have mentioned. It was annoying but as time went on after a decent amount of use the lag sorta went away, maybe it needs to be broken in idk, but I was bummed about it when it was brand new. I've had it since 2017 if I remember correctly and aside from that issue this amplifier sounds insane. I used to have a JCM 900 1402 100w 2x12 and I definitely like the EL34s compared to the 6L6 and the 4 12AX7 gives it a little more gain which after like 40 mins of playing with warm tubes, it sounds incredible. It'll melt your face. Clean channel isn't too bad but as we all know, if you're interested in a marshall you're probably going for a more aggressive sound, which this does real well. Vintage gain channel sounds more like a JCM800 and gets heavier with that modern scoop button. Great for classic rock and metal but I'd say it's a good amp all around but if you're going for anything cleaned up, I'd probably try something else for that.

When I found out Marshall had updated and improved the DSL series of amplifiers, I thought I would try one and now have the DSL40CR.This is a great sounding amp! It is my favorite mode.Marshall is using the Celestion V Type speaker in the DSL40CR which sounds great in this amp and is a major improvement over the seventy 80.The older DSLs had the bright cap which would engage when the channels were switched from classic gain to ultra gain making the ultra gain channel brighter and finding a compatible eq setting for both channels more difficult. I don't know for a fact that Marshall has eliminated the bright cap from their design, but I don't hear thevamp getting brighter when the channels are switched. The build quality has been improved and more importantly the quality of the tone has been improved over the previous series. I recently tried out a mini jubilee and I think the DSL40CR sounds better. The series effects loop is a definite improvement. The reverb has been improved but is still weak. The emulated out is a nice feature but doesn't sound that great. The half power works great. I haven't tried the multi switching function but I have a friend who bought a DSL100HR. He is using a midi controller to use all four amp modes with an elaborate pedal board with several loops and it works to his satisfaction.I'm happy with the DSL40CR and appreciate Marshall for making a great amp at such a great price!

This amp head looks absolutely fabulous when sitting on the top of Marshall MX212AR vertical cab.If used at home, you will need an attenuator, preferably with a reactive load, to get the most out of it at low volumes.Reverb sounds to me as small hall type and goes from none to very audible. This head made in October 2019 works as intended. The volume knobs work with Emulated OUT and the sound is surprisingly good.To be honest I was not very impressed with the head running into 70/80 speakers but the cab upgrade to Celestion AType and VType really made me appreciate how good this amp is.Pedals work well in the loop as well as at the front, but expect some pedals may be noisier than others.I usually set the shared EQ for the ultra gain channel because the classic ... MoreThis amp head looks absolutely fabulous when sitting on the top of Marshall MX212AR vertical cab.If used at home, you will need an attenuator, preferably with a reactive load, to get the most out of it at low volumes.Reverb sounds to me as small hall type and goes from none to very audible. This head made in October 2019 works as intended. The volume knobs work with Emulated OUT and the sound is surprisingly good.To be honest I was not very impressed with the head running into 70/80 speakers but the cab upgrade to Celestion AType and VType really made me appreciate how good this amp is.Pedals work well in the loop as well as at the front, but expect some pedals may be noisier than others.I usually set the shared EQ for the ultra gain channel because the classic gain channel sounds good in any setting to my ears.I hope this new DSL20HR made in October 2019 will be a reliable work horse. The date of the DSL20HR on the barcode is important. Steer clear of those made early, I had 2 heads made in December 2017 and both suffered from volume knobs not working with Emulated Out, had windy popping noise (check marshallforum for the ills of the early batches) and one was repaired 2x with flashing/dark power switch, they were returned for a refund (purchased from a different vendor), but this head made in October 2019 works well, I can confirm that. Good service at DV247 . Highly recommended.

17 January 2023

I’ve got a few valve amps, but never had a Marshall before. Always wanted one, so went for the DSL-40CR as a good workhorse amp for home and gigging use. Great tones and very flexible with the 6 button foot switch giving me effectively clean, crunch and two gain stages on the drive channel, plus footswitchable master for a solo boost. Not gigged yet, but it’s loud enough for pub gigs for sure.

I was going either for a Blackstar HT-20 mk2 combo,or a Boss Kstana mk2 100W combo in the first place but wasn‘t happy with the sound of both. My old Mardhall Valvestate has broken down and was due for replacement. My need was an amp that could do clean to crunchy to distortion nicely and would take standard pedals like a TS or a fuzz well without turning the amp into rocket science. The Blackstar had too much bottom end and the gain structure didn‘t really change when increasing the gain in any channel. To me, it seemed that just more of the same was added, like in a dry/wet mix function. So after consulting the YouTube (big shoutout to Johann Segeborn) I decided to go for a Marshall again, I actually really like the Marshall sound and who the hell needs an amp that can do Fender, Vox and Marshall at once anyways.... Anertons was one of the few stores in Europe who hsd the DSL 40 on stock and Captain Lee just seems like a trustworthy guy, so who not order from the UK even though I‘m from Germany. And what can I say?! Fantastic service and an awesome amp! The two channels with their voicings offer all I need, the amp just sounds great and interacts perfectly with my pedals.
