Owned this amp for almost a month and I am pleased. Was looking for something to achieve cleans and a bluesy tone and this almost nails it. I’m a bit of a tone snob and had read many reviews as to how the Origin 50 provides a plexi-like sound. It’s nothing close to plexi sound which is why I gave this amp 4 stars.Cleans are awesome and the amp does provide some overdriven crunch fir blues, but be aware that the volume must be cranked to get a good overdriven tone. The boost knob serves more as a volume/top end boost as opposed to a gain boost.Overall this is a great amp from Marshall, just don’t expect a ton of gain right out of the box. It does however, accept pedals really well so that is a definite plus. Just wish Marshall would have included an onboard reverb.

I really wanted to like this amp. I've ownned almost every amp made over the past 40 years playing, and currently own 2 other marshall 100 watt heads. I bought the origin 50 head. This thing is UNGODLY loud, easily louder than my 2 other 100 watt heads. I really thought it was defective even in 20 watt mode it easily keeps up with the loudest drummer in 50 watt mode the loudest thing I have ever played through a 4x12, 2 4x12 cabs, and a 112 cab. If you dig 70’s rock: Aerosmith, Zeppelin, ZZ Top etc. you’ll find those tone and many more. The cleans and dirt are very Plexi like, not 100%, but that’s why we use pedals. For recording I use a FULLTONE CS RANGER. There is nothing on earth that sounds better than a treble booster into the Marshall Origin 50c. I did change the preamp tubes to JJ’s, but left the EL34’s Marshall labeled tubes in. The only thing that could be better is the speaker. It’s a Celestion G12N-60 midnight, I’m going to upgrade the speaker to a G12M-65 creamback. This speaker will give a softer high end more mids and a tighter bass. I picked this Marshall Origin 50 combo amp up from my local guitar center after returning a Fender Tone Master Delux Reverb (will write a review for it also). I sprung for the Fender TM after deciding to trade in my Marshall DSL40 (huge mistake) - mainly because I get never get the effects loop to work, plus it had some features on it that I never used, like the ultra-gain channels. Realizing that Fender TM not only doesn't have an effects loop feature, but with its incredible brightness and being a solid state - just get me the warmth and middle volume I love from the Marshall DSL40. Thankfully, Marshall made this less featured model, with all the great tone and for less than the price of Fender TM. Take your time and do you homework on what kind of sound(s) you want from your amp so you don't make the mistake of downgrading like I initially did before settling on this amazing Marshall Origin 50 combo.

Of course you have to crank the amp to really get some distortion out of it. Puts you in classic and hard rock territory instantly (throw in an SG and you're basically Angus Young). Though this amp seems to have a reputation of classic rock, it can easily do 70s-80s metal if you throw in an overdrive for boosting (I use a Boss Sd-1 and with some tweaking you can get some very good Iron Maiden and even early Metallica).In terms of EQ, this amp has brightness to SPARE. The amp is very warm and can be loud enough for performance. I play a lot of jazz with an ES-330 and just can't get over the tone. It loves pedals and solid bodies, as well. Compared to my Silver Jubilee, I'd say the Origin has as many shades of breakup (from soft to crunch) as the SJ ranges from grit to total distortion. The two amps complement each other for me.Throw in the effects loop and foot switch and I'd have to say this is one of the most versatile amps I have ever owned. My Dimension C pedal can make the amp shimmer as well as my Jazz Chorus. It's amazing. The last great feature is the impedance choices for speaker swap options. This is a great amp!
Can't begin to say how much I love this amp! I have a bunch of amplifiers, but this is my everyday amp. It has that old school Plexi crunch without the big price tag. Built in attenuation, so you can play in the house or go on stage and rock the kasbah. With the effects loop, this amp masterfully handles your pedal board. You can really get old school Jimmy Page and Angus tones out of this amp by plugging straight in. Just a superb amp for the price. The only things I would change would be to add a reverb tank, and I wish Marshall sold a dust cover that fit this unit.

I thought it was going to be a very bright and fizzy amp, but it is not at all. It has a very warm and balanced sound. The EL34 tubes are just great. This amp sounds much better in person than all the demos i've seen on youtube. The celestion midnight speaker is also great but i'm into getting a creamback and replace it and see if it is a worthy improvement. The builtin attenuator mode is awesome. You don't lose a bit of tone on any of two attenuation modes, marshall nailed it with this technology. I bought it to go back to a old school setup. I've had it with all this new age software and modeling, and programming! That's not for me! I have two different pedal boards that I custom made that have every effect I could possibly need at a gig.This amp has an effects loop for those who prefer it....I just plug everything right into the front like I did in the eighties, and it works great! This amp is made for pedals..... unless you just like a dry clean sound. I also have a 412 cab to plug it in too! It gets even better with that! So.. I got the combo for smaller gigs, and for the bigger venues I add the 412 cab. Works out great! I plan on adding some corner protectors and wheels soon.
