This is a significant TV upgrade for me. My previous 9 year old Full HD Sony TV has served me very well but it was showing its age. Setting up the A80L was straightforward although a little long winded due the various application terms of service that needed attention. The A80L can be set up as a basic TV but I wanted the full feature set.The A80L is the first TV that I’ve owned where on first viewing I did not feel the immediate need to make adjustments to the picture (usually the colour). Colours were well presented and controlled. Images were rendered with strong colours when necessary without losing detail. The OLED screen did just as well with subtle colours with smooth gradations. I found the screen reproduced content with far more depth than my previous TV which I assume was the result of better image processing, 4K resolution, and HDR. All the Full HD content I watched was upscaled really nicely.Compared to my previous TV I got the impression that the A80L had a slightly wider aspect ratio than the standard 16:9 screen. Maybe it just looks that way because the screen is so much larger than what I am use to.I’m so impressed with the sound quality. During the setup process the TV auto calibrates the audio using the microphone in the remote. I can hear depth and detail in the TVs sound with decent stereo separation. It’s amazing that the main sound is coming directly from the screen itself. Although I did not feel the immedicate need to attach a sound bar, I know a sound bar will always present a more weighty and surround sound encompassing audio experience. The quick settings menu was a godsend. It saved me from having to dive into the main settings menu to make essential adjustments like the sound mode, picture mode, and power saving. The biggest issue I had with the TV was with the terrestrial channels. Initially it seemed as though there was no way to select my favourite channels into a group. It turns out there was two ways to get to the terrestrial channels. There was two apps; a digital app and a Live and Catchup TV app. The Live and Catchup TV app is provided by Youview and allows earlier TV shows to be viewed. It however does not have a Favourite channel feature. This was what I was initially using. The digital app is straight from the TV's digital tuner and does have the Favourite channel feature. Unfortunately, changing channels felt a bit slow to me with is app. Each app presents their own TV guide. The Bravia Core streaming app presented the highest quality streams. The movies had the same kind of appearance I only tend to get from playing physical bluray disks. Two remote controls were provided. One which I would call a general remote and the other a dedicated Google TV remote. I assume this was done to avoid having one big remote control. The morning after I had set up the TV I was surprised to see the TV had switched itself on. There is a power on timer in the settings which was set to off (the default was set to midnight). I deleted the default and so far the issue hasn't reoccured.Upgrading from a 42" TV to a 55" has meant I now need to upgrade my TV cabinet. Although the A80L feet can be reversed to have a smaller gap between them I've come to realise I'm better off with a wider TV cabinet. My previous TV had a pedestal style stand but I guess that as TVs have got larger having feet provide a more stable platform.

Picture quality is supreme with colours being one of the most accurate that I have seen. My previous TV was an 2020 Sony LED TV and having that side by side with this and play the same content (Black Panther Wakanda Forever streamed from Disney Plus on the first day and later also noticed a massive difference in Ted Lasso also streamed from Apple TV+) was a good way to demonstrate the differences in the picture quality. A nice feature also implemented on the TV was the "screensaver" option which would automatically come on to prevent burn in, though the TV did have a static clock and weather icon overlaying it so not sure how that would combat the burn in.The set up out of the box was fairly simple as it is all done via the Google Home app and it immediately knew ... MorePicture quality is supreme with colours being one of the most accurate that I have seen. I also watched a 4k bluray of Matrix Ressurrections which looked crisp with a colours once again being very radiant. The speakers built in to the TV and the sound coming from the screen was great. The TV doesn't connect well with my existing Yamaha YAS107 soundbar so I am having to manually turn the soundbar on every time I use the TV. Hopefully something Sony can fix in a future firmware/software update.Around a week later the TV also developed this issue where it wouldn't always launch and instead freeze and restart itself. Hopefully also a temporary issue that will be fixed soon. Both the negatives haven't really impacted my experience with the TV as the pros of the improvement to the image quality outweigh them massively.

The picture quality is extremely good. the colours really stand out when flowers are shown on horticultural programmes and the image resolution allows the details of blooms to be seen clearly. In drama programmes when the producer has chosen truer to life cinematography the colours can seem to some eyes a little flat. If the viewer prefers the vivid picture mode can brighten the image. The one disappointment is, when watching scenes from dramas that take place on darkened sets, it is difficult to see the detail and despite using the automatic background light sensor got no better results than I’ve done in the past. This is partly due to the bright background light in the room during long summer evenings. The sound quality is excellent with the use of the screen as a speaker providing really well-defined deep bass. Only the most demanding audiophiles will require a soundbar.Setting up was not too difficult but I would recommend 2 things:Be prepared for the size of it by having a console or a ready wall mount set up. I improvised a stand using two stools (see photograph) but would not recommend it if you have small children around.Have all the devices you wish to connect to the set to hand along with the user id’s and passwords and use the set-up wizard. I didn’t and wasted time. This is an excellent product and am happy to recommend it.
This is the first time I have owned an OLED TV and I absolutely love it. It came well packed but without excessive packaging. There were simple unpacking instructions on the box accompanied by clear instruction on how to attach the feet which can be configured in three different ways to suit your preference, namely, wide feet, narrower feet and elevated feet to handle a soundbar beneath.Setting up the TV began when the TV was first switched on and was thorough and made simple by my having a Google account, something I know many people out there already have. You are guided through all the services that need to be set up and it includes some thoughtful and useful services such as setting up access to your favourite images from your Google Photos account. The TV comes with two remotes. One is the kind of remote you would associate with such a well kitted and equipped TV. The other has a built in mic and allows for voice instruction to the TV as well as including several of the key streaming services on their own unique buttons. In practice I have found myself using both without any problems. The TV looks attractive when on it's stand and has a narrower than usual bevel around the screen which when viewing doesn't intrude on your viewing experience. The screen is hosted by Google TV. If you haven't used it before, then essentially it delivers a user interface that includes offerings from all the streaming services available and quick access to all your apps. It has already proved useful by introducing me to content I wouldn't otherwise have come across (only) by browsing the sites I subscribe too. While mentioning the apps, I'm delighted that the TV's operating system allows me to download my favourite sports apps.So to the performance of the TV. You can choose between several picture modes including cinema, standard, IMAX enhanced, game, graphics and photo amongst others. I chose vivid, which is a setting I generally avoid as I find the resultant image just to gawdy. In this case though, for now it's perfect. The picture is everything I had hoped it would be. The blacks are rich while the whites are bright without burning out. I found varying the contrast provides the greatest change to the picture and am delighted with the results. I've been watching the major cycle race of the racing season and the reults are lifelike and so realistic. Friends have seen the TV in action since I set it up and most beging with,"Wow, look how sharp the picture is".One of the bigger challenges I have always found with setting up a new TV is getting the sound how I like it. Often, the levels seems to vary particularly across streaming services and on many occasions in the past my wife and I have had to rewind a scene and raise the volume to understand a particular line of dialogue in a movie. This Sony TV delivers it's sound through the screen and I have to say, that the sound is the best out of the box experience I have ever experienced. Well done Sony. I used my headphones with it this morning so as not to wake the household and the process of pairing and then using them was simple and the sound quality was brilliant.Bravia Core was a service I hadn't experienced before yet it's included with the TV and is a lovely added bonus. It's Sony's very own streaming service and comes with 10 movie download credits and unlimited streaming for 24 months. The list of movies is substantial and I'm looking forward to exploring this some more. It also benefits from 80mbps streaming speed, several times that of other streaming services. I set the TV up using ethernet without problems, but to attain those higher download speeds from Bravia Core, I believe I may have to use the higher speed wireless connection that I have which I expect to do in due course without any problems. So to summarise, I love it. great picture, great sound, great interface.
After receiving my Sony 55" BRAVIA XR A84L OLED TV, the initial setup from the box was pretty straight forward and was easy to follow. The whole setup to get the TV switched on was no longer than 10 minutes. I immediately signed into all my streaming services from Amazon Prime to Apple TV. This TV has allowed me to remove the need for a streaming box to run my services, I used to use a Apple TV 4k that has now been put back in it's box. I went full vanilla and removed my soundbar too, so I could get the full experience of the forward facing speakers behind the OLED screen. The positives:So there are a multitude great things to talk about with this TV, beginning with the best part the picture quality is utterly stunning I upgraded from an LG OLED to the Bravia and ... MoreAfter receiving my Sony 55" BRAVIA XR A84L OLED TV, the initial setup from the box was pretty straight forward and was easy to follow. I went full vanilla and removed my soundbar too, so I could get the full experience of the forward facing speakers behind the OLED screen. The positives:So there are a multitude great things to talk about with this TV, beginning with the best part the picture quality is utterly stunning I upgraded from an LG OLED to the Bravia and the difference is night and day. Whether watching a Imax enhanced 4k movie on Disney+ or Bravia Core to a SD video on YouTube the TV seems to make everything crisp and vivid. Especially the Ultra HD content is some of the best quality I have seen outside of the Cinema. The picture quality continues its impressive display when you hook up a PS5 to it, using the included 120hz HDMI port I found my PS5's visuals in games like God of War Ragnarok and Star Wars Jedi Survivor went from great to amazing. That coupled with the VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and game mode made the games play flawlessly. When they added the tag Perfect for PlayStation they weren't kidding! The sound is both a love and hate relationship for me during my first week with the TV, you can really hear the different with the Dolby Atmos and the built speakers do pack a surprising punch for the audio but they do also carry me on to the only negative I have about the TV. The ease of use of the home menu or the included Bravia Core with 24 months of free streaming and 15 tokens to use on some new titles is a real plus, it has ended up being a stream service I didn't know I needed and have watch a surprising amount of things on it. By choice I don't use a cable TV or Sky box and so I do all my TV viewing through on demand and streaming from all the major streaming companies, this TV has them all so I have been able to continue and enjoy my programs in best quality I have seen them so far.The Negative:It is such a minor thing but once I noticed it, it was hard not to un-notice it. The sound has some great punch and depth to it but it does miss on the bass and sometimes movies can sound a little tinny. I found playing with the equaliser did remedy most of the tinny noise but a soundbar with a subwoofer would probably remedy this small issue.Just as an additional I really do love the included smart remote which allowed me to control everything with just the push of 1 of the 6 included quick start buttons allowing me to get to YouTube or Disney+ with ease, also it lights up in the dark so I don't need to turn my light on at night! My overall impression of the Sony 55" BRAVIA XR A84L OLED TV has been fantastic and I look forward to how they advance their TV range going forward.
This is the 2nd Sony 55 inch OLED TV we've had. Sadly, the original one was damaged during a lightning storm and could not be repaired so our insurance company replaced it for us.This new iteration of the TV is better than the old one. For streaming services (particulary Disney+) the old one struggled with 4K whether it was hard wired or wirelessly connected to internet. One thing I haven't noticed yet (which was particulary annoying!) was the loss of all of the access to streaming services when the TV does a software update. You had to repeatedly sign-in again with the old TV so I turned off the software updates.Again, something I've yet to see is when using the TuneIn radio App (or similar) the old TV would just drop out the App and go back to the 'Home' screen. (Also if using plug in media such as a hard drive for listening to music). The look and feel of the menus are a little different but still easy to follow.I was surprised to see the new TV is supplied with 2 remotes. The smaller one with the streaming service buttons is very well designed and feels nice to use with minimal buttons. The second one has all the number keys etc. but looks and feels cheap. The audio seems to be slightly better but if we are watching movies we would generally use the Sony surround sound system we already have. As with the old TV it switches seemlessly when the surround sound is powered up.Also, nice to get some more free movies with the Bravia Core service. Thanks for that!Overall, the new iteration of the TV seems to be better than the old one and as I've already said, the picture quality is excellent.Hopefully, going forward, no irritating software glitches!Picture quality is excellent and equal to the old TV
Beautiful quality of screen with an astounding range of contrast: blacks are properly and deeply black on this television, while colours are saturated and incredibly vivid; the OLED screen has an incredible richness when watching even in standard definition. But switching into HD or 4K just shows what the screen can do: the level of detail is just superb, with no blur or haze in any rapidly-changing image; for sports or console gaming, the image is sharp and vivid throughout.Sound is not neglected, either: the onboard speakers have plenty of range and bass, but connection the television to an optional sounder really opens the system up to a fantastic cinematic experience; I really like the way the Bravia's stand can be adapted to lift it up, so that a sounder can ... MoreBeautiful quality of screen with an astounding range of contrast: blacks are properly and deeply black on this television, while colours are saturated and incredibly vivid; the OLED screen has an incredible richness when watching even in standard definition. This also continues for a range of set-top boxes and sounders, with the Bravia again detecting the device and labelling the connection for on-screen setting. The remotes provided are simple, but intuitive, with useful buttons to take you straight to the most useful providers like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney + among others. The Bravia core application is easy to use & automatically updates during installation. It provides an excellent range of content, with a very generous introductory period to sample what is available; the range of recent films in particular is fantastic. In all, the Bravia is a great combination of image, sound and content in a beautifulyl-designed package
Wow, what a seriously impressive TV with amazing picture quality and features! From when I received this TV, the unboxing and setup process was extremely easy. One side of the box pulls down so it is very easy to access the TV to easily lift it out of the box. The included paper setup instructions were very clear. The TV comes with two reversible feet which can be configured in three ways allowing for different configurations. Low TV, feet in or out or enough room for a soundbar. I decided to go with the soundbar configuration and the feet inwards as I am restricted on space, but the TV sits very nicely on my desk. From turning the TV on the setup process was very easy. I logged in using my Google account and the setup was very easy from there. I logged in using my Google account and the setup was very easy from there. The menus are very quick to navigate around and all the menu settings make complete sense. I primarily use this TV for gaming so I was super impressed that the TV comes with a dedicated gaming menu. This allows you to adjust items such as VRR, motion blur and black levels. Connected to my Playstation 5, the TV looks outstanding as it is VRR compatible and 120hz. The fact that the TV knew I had connected a Playstation 5 and configured all the settings itself was very impressive. This shows that Sony have thought about the implementation and leveraged their gaming sector.I have integrated the TV to my Google assistant so I can control it using my voice. Netflix looks outstanding on this TV especially as the TV has Dolby Vision and HDR.The sound on this TV is also very good for a TV (I always use a soundbar). The TV vibrates the screen to produce the sound so the sound comes from where it should do on the screen.Overall, I am very impressed with this TV as the picture quality is outstanding, the features are impressive and it is very easy to use.Picture - Amazing colours, black and detail. The picture from TV pops out of the screen, very impressiveFeatures - A very extensive list of features with a dedicated gaming menu, very integrated with the Playstation 5Setup process and size - The setup process for this TV was very easy and the TV looks superb with a very thin bezel
Sony Bravia XR XR55A80L (2023)This TV has replaced my four year old non Sony OLED TV. Unpacking & setting up this tv was quite straight forward with everything being simple & intuitive.Firstly the TV stand gives a three position setting so a sound bar if needed could be placed in front of the TV. Nice idea Sony. There are four HDMI inputs also USB playback too. WiFi, Ethernet, Bluetooth connections. Another nice feature of this TV is the built in Freesat & Freeview tuners. On first use the picture quality was outstanding straight out of the box. Picture is bright, vibrant & incredibly sharp. Blacks are pure ink black really immersive. This TV is HDR ready with Dolby Vision & HDR 10, plus HLG I didn’t realise how OLED TVs had improved in recent years.Sony have set ... MoreSony Bravia XR XR55A80L (2023)This TV has replaced my four year old non Sony OLED TV. Google TV brings a massive range of apps inclusive of your favourite streaming services plus the added ease of interacting & searching with just your voice. My PS5 interfaced immediately when connected & I realised straight away the Sony XR 55080LU is a great gaming TV too.Another nice touch with the Sony XR55080LU is the cable connector cover on the rear of the TV keeping everything nice & tidy.My only negative comment on this TV is the provision of two remote controllers, one for the apps & the other one for the TV. I found the TV remote control buttons on the small side & if you don’t have small hands then you will find the buttons to be too small & close together at times. One larger remote control combining the apps & TV controllers would have been better. My conclusion of the Sony XR55080LU TV is a great television straight out of the box the settings didn’t need any adjustments along with the basic setup installation. Time needs to be spent exploring the many features this TV has to offer, the only negative I found was the remote control. Otherwise I believe Sony have produced a brilliant TV with excellent sound quality.
