My main issue was that the lens was an open box and had more damage than what should be considered as excellent condition. I don't think it was mechanically flawed but it was visibly damaged. That was my main reason for returning the lens but it's barely better than my kit lens. The restocking fee was more than a rental of the G Master 2.8 from borrowed lenses for a week. That's the first restocking fee that I've had to pay but it's going to affect my purchasing habits moving forward. I buy random things that I don't know if I need or not because I can return it if it's defective or not a fit for what I intended to use it for even though more often than not, I end up keeping whatever I buy. Now, I'm not so sure. I basically lost $150 and didn't have the lens 2 days. ... MoreMy main issue was that the lens was an open box and had more damage than what should be considered as excellent condition. I could've rented one for 2 weeks from borrowed lenses. If you're not 100% sure you want it, find a store with a better return policy. Not trying to give borrowed lenses any business because I honestly don't see the value you in renting camera equipment unless you're a professional and will make more than enough to justify the fees. Purchase new and make sure it's exactly what you want before you buy it. You don't want to spend money and get nothing in return. First time buying open box. If they kept a restocking fee from the first person they sold it to, they've made over $260 and still have the lens for sale at probably only $40 or $50 less than regular price. If they've sold it more than that, they're just passing around a lens that they know will get returned only to keep getting restocking fees.

I've been using this 24-70mm Sony Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens now for about 4 years. Here is what I've found. Wide open at 24mm it has very poor sharpness at the outer 1/3 of the frame. Once stopped down to about f/11 at 24mm it gets ok sharpness for acceptable enlargements up to 24" x 36". From about 35mm and up its sharpness is very good at f/5.6 and up. So, if you want a really sharp extra wide-angle lens, I recommend you get a single focal length 24mm or 28mm lens. This lens is not recommended for local lengths less than 35mm. The big advantage of this lens is that it is fairly portable and light compared to others. Since this lens does have limits in the lower focal lengths below 35mm, I have to give it 3 stars.

There is some distortion at 24mm which I have to correct for in post if there are vertical walls at the edge of the scene. Sometimes the level of correction for distortion at 24mm can almost ruin the shot, the correction taking away sides, top and bottom of the image. I remind myself to shoot a little extra wide at 24mm so I have room to crop and correct for distortion. Probably no better or worse than any other zoom lens at 24mm.The autofocus is fast but not lightning fast, but some of that problem is my camera which only relies on contrast for autofocus. All in all its a fairly reliable lens, doing everything very well but not incredibly well. For the price, its a great lens.

I got this lens on open box for 650 bucks. Came in fantastic shape with all the original box/ papers. It's not quite as sharp as my sigma prime lenses but I'll be using this for landscape / nature shots and it's perfect for that I'm my opinion! The only thing I don't quite like is the focus/ zoom rings. I wish there was a more pronounced physical feel between the two. In the moment it's hard to naturally have your fingers find them. Maybe because I'm not used to it. Great lens for a great price!
The Zeiss 24-70mm f4 OSS is quite possibly the best overall lens for video that exists natively in E-Mount. It has image stabilization. An f4 maximum aperture is no problem on an a7SIII when shooting video - most times you'll need an ND-filter when shooting outdoors anyhow; so, that aperture is a non-issue. 24mm is wide enough for most things - there's a sacrifice made depending on what sort of stabilization setting is active on the camera used. 70mm has a nice reach when your legs can't move quick enough to get in closer. It's a tight package - fairly compact and light. I'm amazed there hasn't been an update, a Mark-II if you will, to this lens. At the price point, ~$700, it's tough to beat.
Im a serious amateur photographer and have had this lens for a year or so. What I like about this lens is that its small, light, has a very useful focal range, and f/4 constant aperture through the zoom range. The built quality is very good. The price of the lens is half or less of pro F/2.8 versions produced by Sony, Nikon, Canon etc.In terms of image quality, I pretty much make do with it. The lens is reasonably sharp with good contrast, but nothing that would blow you away. Its more of a case of making do with it. You get reasonable performance as long as your not wigged out about having slightly noticeable better performance at twice the cost.If you are a serious amateur or semi-pro, you can make do with this lens with little complaint except the F4 as the ... MoreIm a serious amateur photographer and have had this lens for a year or so. I think it provides acceptable (which is to say good) performance for the size, weight and price. Its not going to blow you away but you may find yourself using it with little complaint for quite a few years. lol.
I got this lens along with an Sony A7R II. This is the first professional DSLR that I've owned. My background is in motion pictures, but my new job asked me to be their staff photographer, covering school events. This lens has proven to be an amazing workhorse for me in this scenario. The constant aperture allows me to shoot using manual settings with confidence without needing to make adjustments when altering the focal length. I find that I am constantly adjusting my zoom to get shots in the middle of events where I'm chasing small children. So this has been great for me. The lens is sturdy and feels perfectly weighted with the a7r ii. I've spent 6 hours getting shots and never felt fatigued using this lens. The lens is sturdy and feels perfectly weighted with the a7r ii. I've spent 6 hours getting shots and never felt fatigued using this lens. The zoom and focus is smooth throughout the range with a solid amount of drag, so the lens feels sturdy. Its very comfortable for me coming from cinema lenses. I did a lot of research beforehand, and while I have seen the test, I have noticed absolutely no issues with clarity of my shots throughout the entire focal range. I often match shots in a series for marketing that will include wide shots at 24mm with close up's at 70mm. I have even used this lens to get headshots of students at a graduation, where I was a good 50 yards or more away, and then cropped in 400%. The images were crystal clear. 24mm is wide enough to get a full shot of a large room, including the smaller classrooms, while the 70mm has allowed me to get nice closeups with soft focus backgrounds. I would strongly recommend this lens as a general all around choice for anyone with an a7 series camera. This is a perfect all around lens for almost all situations. I also have the Zeiss Batis 85mm and Batis 18mm. Along with those lenses, I still find myself using this 24-70 a lot. The only thing I wish, was that this lens was an F2.8
I am rating this lens for what it is ... A cheaper 24-70 f/4 that has Steady Shot OSS and is labeled by Zeiss (which I wouldn't get hung up about). I see so many reviews, older ones, that claim distortion. Yes it is, unless you either have in-camera fix or software, which most just fix it automatically so x that off the list. Don't shoot people or other subjects at the edges using 24mm. I've seen lots of reviews wishing upon this lens for an f/2.8 or a longer or shorter (mostly longer) reach. Again, IT IS WHAT IT IS! Don't buy this lens wishing you had something else. Save your money and buy a real and heavy lens like the Sony GM 24-70 GM or a prime like the Sony 24 f/1.4 GM or the Sony 35 f/1.4 GM. This lens is none of those! Not even close! But, it is 2 to 3 times ... MoreI am rating this lens for what it is ... But, it is 2 to 3 times cheaper! This is a lens that:1) is decent for video because of the OSS (extra stabilization) . Research further as I am no video expert.2) good carry-around snapshot or landscape lens (because of the weight and f/4 or better)3) and for what I originally purchased it for .... an infrared lens without a hotspot!4) I would replace my kit lens with this if I had a standard kit lens that changed aperture and was rated badly. If I could get this lens CHEAP. This is a straight f/4 24-70.5) half decent for a budget FF or even a APS-C (cropped) except it would be a 36mm - 105mm f/4 on a cropped sensor. If you would buy just to get a lens, I would buy as cheap as possible and get a good deal or get used.If I was going to replace a lens and this was my only lens, on a budget, I would save and get a third-party 24-70 f/2.8 such as the Tamron or Sigma. I would save, scrimp, and/or wait for a sale, bargain, or used lens from one of these guys. The main reason I bought this lens was for infrared. But it does have other uses as a companion to that function. If it wasn't for my infrared wants and desires to try, I wouldn't have bought it. I own a Sony 24-70 GM for my focal length in this range taking other photos. There are many good lenses for regular retail price of $898 or a couple hundred more. I would not pay that price, I paid $698 on sale. If I wanted to just have this lens, I would pick it up in a like new to excellent condition used for under $500. I didn't feel like going this route.I haven't tried it out for the third (infrared) reason yet, as I am still waiting for my camera to be delivered to its source and upgraded to infrared (a7rii). I understand by researching many reviews and databases this is a good lens for that. I am looking forward to capturing many B & W infrared shots with this lightweight lens.If you are a pro, think you are a pro, or just want the best quality and tack sharpness and performance, this isn't going to be your lens. Although you could make a case that it isn't a bad lens. It works well with animal and human Auto Focus (AF). The AF isn't the fastest but it works ok. This is an average lens to me that is a step above a standard kit lens. However it may exceed that level if used for the reasons outlined and what I plan on using it for (infrared) . I personally wouldn't use it for weddings or paid work necessarily, but that's me. Maybe for some oddity infrared shots and such. Anyway, if you want a snapshot lens that is mediocre and relatively cheap when on sale ($698 or better) or even much cheaper used, this is your lens. Pop it on and it's a perfect walk-around lightweight lens. Comparing it to something it is not is like wishing your toaster could also fry you up your eggs, but it cannot. So don't give the toaster a bad review. Go buy the frying pan!I like it for WHAT IT IS so I will rate this lens 5 stars. I would really give it 4.5, as it does have its issues and could use an update (old lens). If I rated this (yawn) for what I WISH I had and dreamt, I would give a 3 or 4 stars when examining my champagne taste lens of desires in my head. I wish I had a $698-$898 lens that was perfect and f/1.4 at 24-135mm but it's not gonna happen. If this lens doesn't work for my infrared as I planned, my rating could change (and I will come back and change it and return the lens). I doubt that is going to happen.Attached are two photos I took when I received the lens, out of box, and attached to my A7RIVa . I edited the dog (24mm indoors) slightly for shadows and colors with Lightroom. I edited the landscape (70mm sunset) pretty well in Lightroom according to my likes. This includes gradient filters, lighting, shadows and colors. It still shows what you could achieve with this lens, Sony camera, and LR or other photo editor. I don't do technical photos and photograph rulers and brick walls. I use it in the real world. All the Best my friends, I hope this helps someone. - GuyWithANiceCamera
I bought my Sony A7RIII used, and wanted one nice lens to start with initially. This ticked all my boxes: Not too big, has a good range of focal lengths, great reviews, etc. I have been incredibly impressed with the performance of this lens, and it's been a real treat getting to know the ins and outs of it's performance. It feels like it's made incredibly well when you hold it in your hands, and the crispness of the photos I've taken has been exceptional. I upgraded from a Canon EOS XS, so obviously a huge shift but I am incredibly impressed. If you're looking for a great starter lens that is decent enough quality, then look no further.
Wonderful short zoom lens. I debated this or the 24-105 G lens. They are both excellent. This lens originally retailed for about $1,200…. And it shows. Zeiss T* glass has that certain ‘something’ (similar to Leica, which I also own).. images pop thanks to the microcontrast, colors, and overall rendering. My Sony A1 is a great test too for this lens’ resolving power and I have yet to find any issues there even though this lens was designed back when single digit and low-teen megalixel sensors were state of the art. The 24-105 G is a fantastic lens also; technically it is more sophisticated and more advanced. But this 24-70 Zeiss/Sony is tiny in comparison and looks more like one of my primes.
