I love steal-cut oats. They take longer to cook, and require a watchful eye when being prepared, but the end result is worth the effort. I make this on the weekends when I have more time. I went to the store here (in Japan) that has for a long time sold Oldums Steel-cut Oats, but to my surprise, they no longer carry it. Thank goodness iHerb still does, and what’s better is that it’s from the famed mill of goodness, Bob’s Red Mill! In terms of size, ease of use, and package design, all 5 stars! Quality, composition, taste, all 5 stars as well. One cannot go wrong with anything that comes out of Bob’s Red Mill.

This version is the least processed oat as compared to rolled oats and quick-cook oats, making it healthier and more nutritional. It takes some patience as it requires longer cooking time, but I feel that it is worth the effort. I personally enjoy the taste and extra bite to it. Nice to be eaten during breakfast or lunch, as a sweet dish with honey/ maple syrup, peanut butter, cut fruits, or as a savoury porridge with egg, dashi, veg, etc. The package comes with a ziplock which is helpful.
Always a good product! I love steel cut oats. Old family recipe: Pour a bag of steel cut oats in a big bowl, cover them in milk, add a big chopped onion simmered in butter, refrigerate for 24 hours to let the grain soak up milk & keep adding milk during this time. Pour into buttered dish, liquid should just barely cover oats, & bake 300-325 until done. Crock pot works too, high until heated then low.
I have been using this product for years and I love it! The steel cut oats take longer to cook than oatmeal flakes, but it's worth it. The consistency is chewy and I don't know if it's healthier but it feels like it is. I cook it with cacao nibs and frozen blueberries. While it's cooking I cut pineapple, mango, papaya (I live in the tropics) and I take a tsp of chia seeds per serving and add a bit of water so they puff up. When the cereal is ready I stir in the chia seeds then add the fruit, squeeze lemon on top, and put a few dollops of coconut yogurt.
I like Red Mill products. I chose steel cut oats because it's my understanding that they deliver lower glycemic index than flat (processed) oats. Seems to have a positive effect for me. Check it out if that matters to you. Easy prep in the microwave. And, also for me, I double the measrements each day. Just add frozen blueberries or cut-up apples. Yum. Steel Cut Oats are one of these best things to start one’s day, but evidently the cook time required doesn’t match busy workaday Japan. To be sure my mornings are hurried. Still, come Saturday or Sunday morning in late fall or winter, and you’re sure to find me cooking up a pot of steel cut. And it goes without saying, Bob’s Red Meal is the best in the biz. The quality of ingredients is top notch, as is the taste. In terms of size, it’s nice they sell a 1.53 kg. bag. This is a staple in my house this season, so I appreciate the bulk size. The package used is minimal plastic use and therefore ecologically wise. Nice one, Bob’s Red Mill. Keep milling goodness.
I was introduced to steel cut oats over 10 years ago. When I was told that I was gluten intolerant, I looked everywhere for a gluten free option of steel cut oats. Finally, I came across Bob's Red Mill Organic Gluten Free Steel Cut Oats. They are absolutely delicious. The texture is amazing. Sometimes I cook a big pot of them, place them in the refrigerator to get cold, slice them in 4 equal parts, wrap them is plastic and freeze them. I then use them when I want steel cut oats. They really freeze well and still taste absolutely delicious.
1st, I have been buying Bob's Red Mill products for years with absolutely "no problems". However, recently I bought a 4-pack box of Steel Cut Oats from Amazon and one of the bags had a larval stage of some kind of bug in it. At first glance, I thought it was a whole oat grain, but it floated in the water and the grains did not. I removed for closer inspection under a magnifying glass and saw legs and the bug was soft.This will not keep me from buying Bobs Red Mill products, however, "IF" I encounter another unwanted guest in my Steel Cut Oats, I will switch brands.I am not asking for anything from BRM, just making them aware of problem. I am aware the world is not perfect, just passing along my experience. I am ordering another box of SCOs today, hope only ...
